Surface Pro form factor -- why the complaining

I have seen a number of people complain about the Surface Pro form factor -- the fact that the two pieces come apart, thus making it harder to use on your lap.

I have to ask -- who exactly uses their laptop on their lap in a business environment?

I use my laptop in meetings where we have tables, on airplanes, and at desks. I almost never use it where I don't have a hard surface. If I did, I would buy an ultrabook with a touch screen. If I wanted a gaming machine I would buy that. The Surface Pro is for business productivity IMHO.

I *sometimes* use my devices while standing, which is why the pen input of the Surface Pro is interesting to me. But again, less than 1% of the time am I sitting in a train or bus or park bench and trying to type more than few words...

You needed a new thread for this? And people only use Surface in a business environment?

Why are you pigeon-holing the Surface Pro as only being a business productivity device? Perhaps if you reevaluated your expectations, you'd see people complain about its ability to be used in a number of situations because they're actually trying to use it in those situations and encountered problems. Sounds like you think people should carry 3 or 4 computers around with them all day, and I guess that's fine if you're made of money and built like a tank, but I'm not.

I understand your position. However, there is no company that has created the "perfect" device that works in all possible ways. Apple doesn't have a full feature touch computer that runs all productivity apps for example. So I am not sure why people expect MS to create The One, when no other company has. The Surface Pro has some primary users in mind. As far as I can tell, they are people who need mobile business productivity.

MS advertised the Surface Pro as a laptop replacement and many people hold laptops on their lap. so it's not exclusively a business device

I would like one 95% from a business standpoint. However, I still do work sitting on a couch, in bed, etc. where it would be on my lap. Limitations on being able to use that way has made me wary, although it sounds like people are saying the new covers are an improvement?

It's not the covers that are supposedly increasing the 'lapability' of the Surface 2s, it's the kickstand that allows the screen to lay in a lower position. Just from the demos I've seen it looks the new position of the kickstand should mostly resolve the issue.

When posting a lot I like to sit with my notebook in my lap rather than at a table even though its a big MSI machine because its easier so I can understand the feelings.
