Supreme Commander Thread!

Im at work right now, i noticed there is no link for the patch, does it update automatically?

It updates GPGn and then SupCom when you login, yes. Same as patches 52 and 48 (47?).

Never heard of it.
if you haven't caught on by now, IM BEING SARCASTIC! Just as TA did to [insert some generic C&C game here], SupCom is going to push C&C3 into the realm of obscurity and irrelevance.

waffles

C&C 3 will probably be shinier, but far less flexible. It will also be much shorter-lived with a significantly smaller fan base two or three years after release. SupCom promises to hold on to players for years.

I like the latest patch:) The game seems to run smoother late game for me now.

NINJA EDIT I like the new music as well! Can't wait for retail :)

Are there any sort of video benchies out for SupCom yet? I've not built the system, and I'm wondering if I should go ATI or NV.

None that I know of, though I suppose you could quick-and-dirty it by running a game replay with FRAPS going...I might actually try that...

Okay, here's what I did for you other beta folks: I grabbed this replay and started it, shifting FRAPS into benchmark a couple of seconds after starting it. I then let it run in benchmark mode on the system in my .sig for approximately twelve minutes, game settings as follows: 1680x1050/60Hz, shadow fidelity to Low, AA off, texture quality to medium, vsync disabled, all other settings on or at high, and with copious amounts of zooming in and out over the landscape at various random points. The results:

Frames: 22151
Time (ms): 723010
Min FPS: 16
Max FPS: 61
Avg FPS: 30.637

The replay itself ran after that to its end (about 29m), and was massive enough in places that my system got down to an absolute low of 5 FPS a couple of times. On average, though, it tended to run at between 20 and 30-35 FPS.

It's very good, judging from the beta, but it's admittedly a little different from most RTS games in how you do certain things. If you've ever played Total Annihilation, it works almost exactly like that. (It's basically TA's spiritual successor anyway.) If you prefer your RTS games simpler, like StarCraft (this isn't a knock, mind--just a design choice), you probably want to stay away. Far away.

How is starcraft simplier? I played TA a long time ago when it came out and thought it was pretty simple. How is this game more complex ?

Hm. In retrospect, simpler probably wasn't entirely the right word to use...simpler and/or more straightforward, perhaps. At least to me. With both TA and SupCom you have a bit more in the vein of resource-based economics to manage; far...far larger theaters of battle to manage; and on top of that you have the whole tech-tree thing to manage (or not, depending on your exact strategic mindset).

(Keep in mind, though, that at the ripe old age of 35--in gaming terms, I'm a senior citizen!--this stuff is a little more daunting to me than it was when TA first came out. Still great stuff, but harder...)

when does the BETA end? or is it over already, i haven't had time to play it

Rumor has it the beta period ends at or near the end of the month...a cursory check of the official GPG beta forums last night didn't specifically confirm this, however.

This makes me happy. So does that mean all the bugs will be worked out by then as well?

i assume the game will ship with some bugs... but hopefully anything game breaking will be solved before they master... i can't think of any game in recent memory that has released with ZERO bugs...

I had the same question. I guess I preodered this game based on all the hype. Since you've played the beta, can you elaborate more on how this is different than, say Command and Conquer: Generals? I enjoyed that game quite a bit, and played the hell out of the skirmish modes. Am I going to enjoy this game?

official end of beta is feb 5th. So play as much as you can through the weekend.

.49 ai mod works with the latest version, you can get it from gamereplays. also I found a built in benchmark for supcom:

place shortcut to supcom on your desktop.
at the end of the first edit box add this : /map perftest
run the shortcut.
scores your system in a lower is better manner.

I am officially out of the loop with everything! This was my favorite RTS game ever! I still have it installed on my computer if anyone wants to play. Keep me updated guys.

TA was my favorite until an hour after trying supcom. At which point I found I couldn't live without zoom and TA dissappeared from my mind forever.

beta over on the 5th :( 15 days of no supcom.....btw any1 know when/if there'll be a demo?

Just for kicks, I ran the performance test thing pain.angel mentioned. It's basically a sort of demo of a series of battles on one of the island maps, with a lot of units on the map all at once. It's a beast...nukes, fairly massive engagements, UI rotations, the works. And I have absolutely no idea how the numerical scale involved works...only that I got a performance rating of 52.9 out of it.

EDIT: honestly, miskari, I'll be very surprised if there's a demo before the game actually comes out.

I got a 76.6 running dual screen highest settings 1680x1050 and 1280x1024. Going to run non dual screen now and see what score I get.

Tried the test on single screen and I got 34.4 at 1680x1050 highest settings. That just goes to show you when you dual screen its double work for the computer!

CPU: e6600@ 3.44ghz
VIDEO: 8800GTS stock
RAM: 2GBs DDR2 800

running the test now...
A64 3200+, 1x1024, dont remember the resolution, x1600xt. All stock speeds. I wonder if it picks a specific res for the test.
result: *ouchies* 223.5

edit: I like the double deeteet deeteet deeteet noise of the nuke pairs. And then they hit. "commander under attack" Well no shit. It just got double nuked...

it runs at your settings in options. I got a 107 at 1680x1050 on medium settings. Fairly certain my video card is to blame for the most part but still unsure. I wish we could get a benchmark for some games that tells you exactly what your lacking in. Pretty hard to figure that out though I assume since a cpu can bottleneck a gpu, etc.

I've heard rumor (from jmavor, a gpg employee, on gpgnet) that a similar score will be posted for each player in the gpgnet client to address concerns about lowered end players playing with high end players and the lag it causes.

So if I'm on a 2.66P4, 2gb pc3200, 7600GS how will sup com run on average?

I'm guessing I won't be able to run it at my LCD's native 1680x1050 :D

1024x768 low settings would be what you should be able to run. Even then it wont be great but it will be decently playable (of course when the game goes gold it will be optimized more so you may get a little more milage out of your system.)

Anybody tried running this on an x800? I wanna buy it but I'm not planning a GPU upgrade for at least another 3-4 months.

i think the game is more CPU intensive, as long as you have a dual-core you should be good, i've seen some ppl say they are playin on a x800 in GPGnet. BTW GPGnet is really amazing

I got the new PC gamer yesterday with the Sup Commander review/cover story    So cool !!!!! Anyways, do you guys/gals think a PC like this
AMD 3000 + @ 2 ghz
2 GB Ram
GeForce 5600 Xt
80 GB HDD (but I have a ton of free space left)
could run it on the lowest but playable settings ? Like I don't care if its @ 20 or 25 fps.

GeForce 5 series does not meet minimum specs. Below min specs doesn't mean it runs like crap. It means it *will* *not* *run* GF5 = no geometry instancing = no play supcom. Period.

You have the right amount of ram however your CPU may be a little on the slow side and the video card must be replaced to play SupCom decently. I would pick up one of these for your video card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150190

Any ideas if there will be a create a unit program ala TA? That game lasted so long because of the new units like skunkworks, which took the game to another crazy level.

Yes there will be extensive tools released to the public and maybe even knowledge base on how to use these tools.

"Q. On a scale of 1 to 10 how flexible is Supreme Commander going to be for modding? A 1 being able to change basic things like unit stats such as cost and health, and with a 10 being able to easily convert the entire game into something else.
CT – I would really hope that we are in the high end of that scale, at least an 8 but hopefully a 9. We know there is something we overlooked that was hardcoded in the game, but that doesn’t mean we can’t release an update to correct that. SupCom was not only architected to support modding, but we build something we call the “mod manager” right into it… and though there will be wrinkles to iron out, we are very excited about this approach.
Q. Do you plan on releasing a Software Development Kit (SDK) for modders? If so, what tools will be included? Will anyone from Gas Powered Games be available to answer any questions if a modder has any problems? And will it be available when SupCom releases?
CT – We are still forming our official plan, but right now are leaning towards just releasing the in-house tools. The question we struggle with is, do we try to make them easier to use or add a lot of documentation to explain how they work, or do we just drop them out there sooner and let the community figure them out… both are valid and have trade-offs, but we just haven’t made a final decision on which way we’ll go yet."

I'm seeing requirements as PixelShader2.0 and 128MB, and from what I'm reading, the 5600XT has that ... ?

I've highlighted the appropriate clause of my earlier post. The specs you have are old. During beta they were raised. Need I go on?

He was asking a question, not flaming. Don't be a jerk.
I dont like people telling me Im wrong. Especially when Im not.
