Since I have not seen a thread dedicated to supreme commander yet I will start it out. In this thread lets discuss all aspects of supreme commander while we wait for the release in early 2007 :). I will start with some info...

Here is a an overview from wikipedia.

"Supreme Commander is a computer game of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, developed by Chris Taylor's Gas Powered Games and slated for release sometime in 2007. It was announced in the August 2005 edition of PC Gamer magazine and is referred to as the spiritual successor to Taylor's 1997 RTS release Total Annihilation, which has been widely hailed as one of the great triumphs of the genre "

Supreme Commander will have new features never seen before in a RTS such as dual monitor gaming and RTS gameplay on a massive scale never seen before. My opinion is Supreme Commander is going to be one of the most revolutionary RTS games coming out in the next 4 years. I cant wait :) any other people out there that are awaiting the release?

I am also looking forward to it. I am especially interested in the overarching control scheme, as it seems you can step back and give general orders, and let the AI take care of the micromanagement of the fighting.

Like I said a while back this looks like Total Annihilation on steroids - and that's a GOOD thing. :D

This title is one of my most anticipated games of '07.

It's an amazingly ambitious product, but if it works out it will be unbelievable. I personally can't wait for it.

I'm upgrading to a new system December/January (if all goes according to plan) and one of the main reasons is this game. I'm planning on running 2 monitors (primary is a widescreen) because of the support for both widescreen and dual monitors. It should offer a really nice breath of fresh air into the RTS genre.

I have severe reservations about this game. I mean, it sounds so cool, but I worry. Dungeon Seige 2, another Chris Taylor game, pretty much played itself. You'd tell your guys what spells to use, what items to wield, walk them into a room, and they killed everything on auto-pilot, even auto-drinking potions and auto-picking up loots. I just got bored of the game very quickly.

Everything I've read about Supreme Commander talks about setting up AI to automatically build your base, automatically send troops to the field, automatically fight the battles, automatically harvest resources. I have to ask...what is left for me to do?

Ah well, I'll still probably check the game out when it's released, it has so much buzz I'll have to.

I think Chris Taylor is going to stay true to the TA gameplay focus... with massive amounts of units and war and carnage. I think the engine is what im looking for the most out of Supreme Commander... It looks and sounds like it will revolutionize the RTS games forever just like Total Annihilation did. From what im reading Chris Taylor will make the engine fully customizable down to the interface, gameplay, ai, units, maps, and just about everything else. This is what made Total Annhilation so good was the mod community and the customizability of the game. Im looking forward for a great game expirence from Supreme Commander and a massive amount of fun online with multiplayer and the mods that will come.

To add another note... when you look at a finished RTS game with very few bugs and excellent gameplay only a very few come to mind... One being Starcraft and the other being Total Annihilation. Most RTS games that have come out recently were riddled with bugs, bad netcode, horrible coding, lag, and crashing. To give an example of a few Command and Conqeror generals, Age of Empires 3, and several others. It takes a great programing team to make a great product and when you look at most newer RTS games they have all been made by large companies that dont care about quality as much as making money and that is the difference. C&C Generals being made by EA games and Age of Empires 3 being made by Microsoft both companies have been pumping out bad products for sometime with little to no care for the support and care for their customers.

Alright, you got me interested. Have to see how this comes along and probably get a copy or two.

cool things about this game:

-Once zoomed in completely some units will take up the full screen (thats how massive the gameplay is)
-there is no mini map, you zoom in, out, scroll, etc. Once completely zoomed out you have a complete view of the battle field and zoom in real-time
-alot of the same aspects taken from TA and put back into the game, such as idividual bot setting from passive/agressive/defensive
-a huge opening for the community to create their own bots for use :D

Everything I've read about Supreme Commander talks about setting up AI to automatically build your base, automatically send troops to the field, automatically fight the battles, automatically harvest resources. I have to ask...what is left for me to do?

thats how TA was, you can set up your build bots to build and set them on a repair route to auto repair buildings as they come to them, same for units, you can have TA completely set up for auto-matic play (don't set up big berthas for auto attack ... )

some maps your base should already be set up, with the rumor of the complete massiveness of this game you'd spend probably a good hour just building up your base to anything comparable to whats already there, as for the resources you'll probably start off with essential nodes taken over and just enough power plants to get you by, but if you want a true war making ability you'll need to out in search of more resources

That's not strictly accurate. You're right though in the typical sense that there's no small map in the corner that shows you the overhead, but if I remember correctly, one of the things a dual monitor setup enables is having a "minimap" cover the entire second monitor so you always have an overhead view. I'll try to dig up a link or a screenshot for you.

Thanks if you can find that link, I never heard about their dual monitor support until now, i was wondering how they would accomplish that, if thats true it would seem to pretty useless but at the same time a nice substitution for those not wanting to zoom out

The second monitor can function as a completely functional screen I believe you can choose to zoom in and out and see the whole map like a mini map display or concentrate it on a specific location like your base or the area your attacking. I will try to dig the info up and post it later.

this post looks like an ad

I deffinately am looking forward to this game. TA is still my favorite RTS, even if this was TA with updated graphics, I'd probably be fine with that. :p

Well, I didn't find the exact article I read (I'll keep digging) but I found these:

Supreme Commander will offer dual monitor support so that players can watch two parts of the battle at once on full screens and control either one of them at any time. This could be useful for all kinds of strategic actions but probably will be most useful to keep one of the screens in zoomed out mode and control large groups of units to move on a larger scale while keeping another for tactical decisions.
from IGN (links to full article).

and the second:
if you, like Taylor, want to keep things big, you'll be able to take advantage of some of Supreme Commander's other unique features--dual monitor support, which lets you keep one eye zoomed in on one of the game's huge battles, and the other on a zoomed-out view of the world to keep track of larger developments in the war. And if you have a widescreen monitor and don't care to have the game's interface sitting at the bottom of the screen, completely stretched out, you can instantaneously reconfigure the interface elements to appear on the left side of the screen.
from Gamespot (links to full article).

here is the info on dual monitor from the offical FAQ off the gas powered games website

"Q: I've heard SupCom requires dual monitors - is this true?
A: No, not at all. It supports dual monitors, but does not require it. It even allows a single monitor to run in split-screen mode.

Q: Can I do both split screen AND dual monitors?
A: By default, the game starts on 1 screen with a minimap.
- If you split the screen, you get 2 views + minimap.
- If you instead turn on the 2nd monitor, you lose the minimap

You can split the primary monitor in a dual-mon setup, but you can't split the 2nd monitor."

So going dual monitor infact gets rid of minimap so in it seems the second monitor is a fully functional map where you can choose to zoom out or in all the way and use it like a mini map or focus on your base or enemy base location for example.

Im still a little confused on the different monitor configurations. I guess we will just have to wait for more info.

Im wondering why it looks like an add I simply quoted the wikipedia overview of the game and adding in some links.

This looks like an ad, too! :p

been watching this for months now, so heres some more info:
full DX10 support-for best visuals go with DX10 hardware and vista
Full dual screen support as talked about above. 2 screens, and/or 2 views on one screen
Full use of dual cores
complete skinning and customization of the UI
full modding support for the community, new units, AIs, UIs, maps, etc.
and the biggest thing: the zoom! Tiny tactical view through full thousands of square km map sizes.
The battle dwarfs the heavy tank, and super units are above those.
Amphibious destroyers for one team
Amphibious base for another
"galactic collossus" walks upright, dwarfs even the battleships, and is one evil SOB (can survive 5 tactical nukes at once)
Amphibious experimental unit: MonkeyLord. With 6 (8?) legs and a giant laser on his back, he hits hard at short ranges and can kill smaller units by stepping on them (as can the GC)
Undetailed as of yet shield generators (including mobile). We dont know if they are additive to each other, we dont know 2 way, we dont know how they are powered. But they are in!
Basic items like transports (can be automated, so put your construction buildings in the safe part of your base and fly the results to the front without any extra work), long range artillery (super unit, tac nuke artillery), tanks, energy generators, etc are all in.
Also: subs (including a nuke sub), aircraft (who fly at different altitudes), walking bots and tanks...
High res screen shots: http://www.supremecommanderhq.com/images/screenshots/big/
Lots more info on the game: http://garage.gaspowered.com/?q=node/2788
OTA is still my favorite game of all time, and Im planning on getting an e170x soon as G80 hardware and vista come out on it just to play it. Im debating throwing vista and a better GPU onto my server to play for cheaper...but with a gaming laptop I can also attach my 20" screen to it as a secondary!

Didnt know that Supreme Commander will make full use out of dual core processors etc. Looks like I got a Core 2 Duo just in time for supreme commander. Im going to have to get vista right away it looks like :p to make full use of this game. Good info GLSauron some of it I did not know like the optimized code for multiple cores or processors. Some of the in game unit and gameplay features im looking foward to are the force fields (shield generators) and phase gates (teleport gates). I love being a turtle RTS player, thats what was so great about TA, building up extensive base defensives and countering a massive attack on your base. With the shield generators and extensive amount of defensive weapons Supreme Commander sounds like its going to be a blast!

Agreed. Now I'm going to have to install TA again!

Thanks for all the info on the dual monitor support, that just gets me more ansy to play it

Here is a nice list of collected public facts about Supreme Commander.

http://garage.gaspowered.com/?q=node/2788

some of my favorite public facts

"...anyone with a multicore CPU is going to get a boost as the game is multithread enabled (but not required). Pretty much all of Engineering at GPG have dual-proc or dual core machines and it does give you a performance edge at the current time in SupCom. This could easily change though."

"We are doing some pretty incredible things with the UI in terms of scaling across resolutions and aspect ratios. Playing at that resolution (2560x1600) shouldn't be a problem, but you will need a card with some serious fill-rate."

Finally a game that pushes the limit of the CPU and GPU to the full potential this game screams quality computer programing.

I applied for beta a while back when they opened registration for it, hopefully i get a spot I loved TA and Chris Taylor is a gaming god

Does anyone have a forum account that I can use to apply for the beta? I didn't sign up (curse my laziness!) and I'd really like to at least have a chance to get in on this. Obviously I'm not expecting anything, but it would great if someone isn't interested and is feeling charitable.

It is about time a game supports dual display. Correct me if I am wrong, but SLI does not support dual monitors in 2GPU mode right? Good excuse to wait for a single GPU DX10 card instead of getting the 7950GX2.

I really hope the online support is well done (like blizzard with War3). Most recent RTS online lobbies have sucked lately.

If Supreme Commander is anything like TA with innovation and use of new technology you will not be able to fully push the game to its max limits until at least 2-4 years later.

this is the single game i look forward to the most. taylor better nail it.

It also looks like they got their stuttering issues fixed from their earlier demonstrations

I think that dual screen function is the most exciting aspect of this game so far!

Yeah I agree trimlock not to mention Supreme Commander will have full support for multi core/ multi processor support :). Im getting ready to buy my second display in time for Supreme Commander, im drooling over playing a state of the art RTS with something like a(2) 24" LCD...

hmm, this game might suck! hopefully it won't pale in comparison to the new C&C.. right nullzero?
