Another big story out of GDC was the unveiling of the latest Super Mario title, tentatively named Galaxy. Gamespot has their thoughts on the trailer that was shown as well as some other information from Miyamoto’s keynote.

The trailer began showing Mario floating in space around one of his familiar magic stars, then went directly to a montage of Mario leaping and flying in an interstellar setting that featured planetoid-like objects floating in space. The planetoids were varied in shape; some were shaped like eggs, others were more oddly shaped and featured rocky outcroppings or grassy knolls; still another looked as if it were carved from wood.

I'll hold most of my thoughts untill I can play this game but it really just doesn't look that good to me. When I see it I think mario sunshine2: sun orbit.

I really just want something like mario 64 again. I think they are trying too hard to make it different.

The 'biggest' thing out of GDC that I've seen was the Little Big Planet presentation, which was absolutely awesome and has decidedly put the PS3 in my crosshairs. If you haven't seen video of that game yet, look it up, very worthwhile.

When I watched the trailer, I felt more like they abducted Mario and put him in some weird abstract planet jumping game. It wasn't like Wii's Zelda where you walked around and got the familiar sense of Zelda: OoT Hyrule.

Looked neat to me! Still seemed very marioesque. I think the controls would definitely make or break the game.

Looks pretty cool. But then again, I think 6-bladed razors are innovative.

Exactly my thoughts. My first impression of 'Galaxy' was, "Oh boy... they took the ridiculously irritating bonus segments of 'Sunshine' and made a whole game out of it". I am waiting for that full-world sense of wonder that was Mario64.

There's one thing that I absolutely, positively hate in 3D platformers: the leap of faith. It looks like a good deal of 'Galaxy' is going to be shooting off into space, hoping you may or may not land on a planetoid. Hooray.

On the flipside, the character animations and details are gorgeous. If they can do this on the Wii, then what's wrong with developers on other consoles? The best thing I see for the Mario franchise thus far is the new 'Paper Mario', which definitely gets a gold star in the innovation category.
