I told this to get chuckles instead im getting bashed.I didnt ask anyone for sympathy. Please show me where i said anything about feeling sorry for me?None of you get it or have a sense of humor.I thought it was funny to be honest and if you could not understand this then i do not know what to tell you.

Forgive me for not being able to see the humor in it. I read it again, I still can't see the humor in it. Maybe it was the way it was written. Maybe the story itself is not that funny. Maybe it's a combination of both. Whatever it is, I did not read that as a funny story. I read that as a rant/sob story.

In a forum, whenever you post a story, you should always expect some bashing.

I think the issue here is that the check was from out of state, in Wisconsin. And he tried to use it in Chicago. Wouldn't it have been reasonable to assume that a retailer might refuse to accept an out of state check that could bounce/be fake, etc?

Some online electronic retailers will accept checks but you have to wait a week for it to clear.

I've worked in bank fraud before, there are a lot of rules retailers follow with checks and a lot of ways people can defraud businesses with them.

^ Agreed. This story didn't have a lick of humor to it. When reading it, it was almost you were wanting people to feel sorry for the OP. The fact is, is that the OP was using what is considered an archaic way of paying for goods, that hasn't been the norm in quite a few years now.

I saw no humor in what you posted originally.

Simply a poorly written rant about using a personal check......or trying to in another state....in 2012.

I don't care where you live, this whole thing is poor planning.
I also am not buying you going to Best Buy with a wad of cash and them refusing to help you out.
I mean come on.....they have an online store, too. Go to store, have them help you order the item , and pay for it IN CASH at the store, with goods sent to store or to you. I've done it.

If you want less or different from here, it won't happen..........maybe Facebook would have been a better choice.........[H]arden up.:D

The OP's original post might not have been humorous but if you read through this whole thread it actually does become somewhat of a funny story afterall.

What bothers me is places that don't accept cash. Or places like my apartment complex that REQUIRE you to pay online. (Really?)

I guess everybody just has their own preference on how they like to pay. I don't have spending problems so i like credit cards.

I see people paying with cash and debit all the time. I love paying with credit since it gives me the most protection, i get rebates, and don't have to carry a bunch of cash, absolutely hate carrying and receiving coin change. I'll switch to cash only if a store will give me a discount over credit.

I prefer to pay online, order from online, whether its for work or play. I use meails to order special order items. I hate using the phone, its so archaic.

As for the OP, I havnt used a check since I was younger, and im 42 now. Cash? Whats that, I use all plastic.

It's a bit unfathomable to me how anybody could not have a bank/debit/ATM card? I've had one for the past 20 years.

It's been a really long time since I've ever seen anyone write a cheque. I honestly haven't written one myself for years either. I know a few places that do not accept cheques as they can bounce and they have no way of getting the money.

Then again, in my country, practically everywhere has debit card readers at the till and I'm not sure if that's not the same elsewhere.

I still see people write checks when buying groceries at safeway(our biggish grocery/supermarket) every so often, so yes I guess some places still accept them.

Wall of text + no break between sentences= pain to read. *_*

There were periods between sentences but I guess he doesn't know that you are supposed to have a space after a period and that you should capitalize the first letter of each word at the beginning of a sentence.

Luxury problems. Look on the bright side. At least you have some money in the bank, can afford a $600 gpu and don't have to worry about wife/girfriend reaction when it eventually arrives.

agree with this

and hope you get some more sleep

I really do not care what you believe. It is true bestbuy on large purchases such as the 7970 would not take cash.Go try it see what happens.Supposedly the vendor they deal with would no allow it for one reason or another.I think they deal with shop.com or something.I have a debit card now and all is good.Do some research before shooting your mouth off. They tried to get me to buy a bestbuy card to make the purchase.

And yet you do not see the mistakes in your own grammar. Before calling someone else fix your own mistakes:)

Enough, enough. If you didn't care what someone believes you wouldn't spend the time replying to this thread. Even if for the sake of writing it makes you feel good, you still need to devote some time to reading posts regardless if you agree with them or not. But I'm willing to bet you do since you clearly took the time to necro your thread from the depths after two months from the latest reply.

Listen, impulse buying can make us do things that we would never do in circumstances otherwise. I'm sure you knew that it is now damn near impossible to get a place to accept a check (even if the place says they accept checks) from out-of-state or somewhere not "local." This world revolves around time more than it ever has in the past. Thus, cards are the norm, but not necessarily what has and will forever be used as accepted currency.

I don't know what part of Wisconsin you're from, but most businesses here realize that the convenience of bringing in credit card users is not as significant as the amount of income lost due to the 1-2% service charge to Visa & Mastercard. So those businesses choose *not* to accept credit cards, and use cash/check only. And I'll be the first to tell you those places are still doing good business. Restaurants that accept credit cards only? You're going to have to cite that source, because if I wave cash in front of someone to pay a bill...well...chances are my bill is paid.

And there is a lot of misinformation spread throughout this thread about topics ranging from whining about such-and-such place not accepting <form of currency/credit>, all the way to different forms of financial advice. You know what's some great advice, people? Ask questions. And something more interrogative than "Do you accept ... here?" Run into an issue? Ask for a supervisor/manager. Do they tell you the same thing? Call the BBB. Report issues, and not just to a forum. There is truth in knowledge, but rarely will anyone know what is truth.

isn't it Federal law for them to have to accept cash? and what's up with a 40 year old OP almost crying over an AMD card in the first place?

Easy way around this. Buy a prepaid credit card.

This is what I did. Greendot is your friend. Also this thread has been highly entertaining.

You can buy a prepaid Greendot card at Rite-Aid , Walgreen's , Wal-Mart , Target... and so on. I don't care how desolate a place you live in , one of those stores is within driving radius.

If you modernize your graphics cards and computers, you really should get a credit card either, checks belong to deep past.

K. Now I think the op is just a troll. There was no reason to bump this 2 month old thread.

I'm 29 and have used 1 check my entire life. I had to right VOID across it and give it to a former employer to setup direct deposit.

5 grand in the bank at 40? Not exactly tearing it up champ. Better lay off the big video cards.

I'll jump on the band wagon and say that anyone who even half pays attention to the way our country works now would know that a card (either prepaid or debit) is the only way to really do business anymore.

I'm still using checks I had printed 5 years ago because I only write 1 every month (for rent). Outside of security perks, there are the cash back bonus as well. Being 40 years old, just imagine getting 1% (at least, all the way up to 5% cash back) on all the stuff you buy. Do that for 10 years and you could have gotten Crossfire 7970's for free practically. I use to get an extra 400-500 dollars a year in cash back from purchases and paying bills back in the years when I was ballin' in the oil industry. Now? not so much, but it's nice getting a free $100 every 6 months these days.

Now it's true some people just can't use "digital" currency. And by that I mean they don't know how to stick to a budget or keep track of their spending. I'm the type of guy that treats my credit card exactly as cash, and unless I have the money to cover what i spend for the entire month i *DONT* buy it. It saves you from paying interest and any other unpleasant run away credit card debt. people like this are going to find it harder and harder to business in the fast paced digital world if they have to resort to writing a (possibly) questionable check.

I actually never carry cash these days - here in TX at least, everything is electronic. Even if my wallet gets stolen, who cares? I cancel all my cards, get them replaced for free, and spend 10 bucks to get a new drivers license. With credit/debit accounts why assume more risk than you need to when time tested systems are in place to make your life easier.

Oh but there was....I am responding to posts that needed responding to.I do not like being called a liar sorry.More like im being trolled on by being called a liar please read the post again.thanks

Might I recommend getting a debit card and then writing the charges in your check book as you make purchases? It adds a degree of control to those of us who get a bit loose with our cards... Hehe.

Really?Thats all you got?Have way more then that in my savings account so try again..

Like a great many other people here you don't know the difference between 'then' and 'than'. You also, by your own admission nearly cried because you didn't get a video card in a timely manner. Are you really sure you want to continue this discussion? Don't take offense at someone telling you truthfully that having 5 grand in the bank at age 40 is pitiful.
