Suggestions for a PSU

Currently I am running a Thermaltake Toughpower 700W PSU
It was stripped from my old computer to save on upgrade costs. It has been powering my
whole system.
790i Motherboard
4GB DDR3 Ram
8800 GTX Vid card
3 harddrives (1 velociraptor, other 2 just normal SATA)
E6750 CPU (2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo)

I am looking to over the next 6 months upgrade from this to.

GTX 295 (and later 2x)
(will always have 3 Hard drives, maybe 4. Might get another velociraptor).
Q9650 (or maybe better depending on prices). ( at least some fairly nice cost effective Quad core instead of dual.)

What I am wondering is, will that 700W be enough for 1 GTX295. (including its unique Amp requirements and voltage requirements), or would an upgrade be needed for running one. And if an upgrade is required to run 1. or, for future proofing for when I get another, what PSU would be suggested? And what PSU companies do you guys find to be the best. I am hoping to only have to plop down 250-350 for the PSU, as ive seen some expensive PSU's for 500, If you can find a great one that suits my needs for less thats even better.

Thanks in advance.

A corsair 1000 would power 2 295's, however, your PSU should power a single one. I ran a 4870x2 on a corsair 750 with no issues at all. I believe the most it pulled was around 450-500 total watts under load.

To highjack my own thread, I noticed in your sig that your computer monitor is a Samsung 40" 1080p LCD. Is that the ToC one running 120hz? and if not or if so. How do you like it? I was thinking of buying one myself.

I will continue to monitor this thread for more suggestions, or people can second/third/fourth what he said above if you would suggest the very same thing.

It is in fact the ToC 120hz one. It's an LN40A650. I love it! Unfortunately the 120hz only works for TV and is only helpful for sports. PC mode is standard 60hz but works great. I do have one issue though. DX10 at 1920x1080 only works in interlaced mode with incorrect scaling. I don't mind playing in DX9 but I sure hope they come up with a fix cause I can see this becoming a problem in the future when DX10 gaming is mainstream.

Is this a problem with most LCD TV's or just the Samsung Ones? Or just the Samsung ToC ones? I was also looking at the Samsung 32" ToC one. As i felt 40" would make me have to sit like yards back from my desk to really benefit. Whats your experiance with this?

Also, Are you running it using an HDMI? or do you have an HDMI to _____ converter.

I don't believe Samsung screens are the only one's affected by this issue. I sit about 4-5 feet away from my screen and though it took a little getting used to, I feel it is the perfect size. Here is a picture of my setup:

I have to ask. 1. Where are your speakers (do you use the LCD TV's?)

2. Wheres your mouse
3. Wheres your keyboard :p

Your current PSU is enough for a single GTX295. For a second one though, it would be a good idea to go with something more powerful.

I would recommend a quality 1kW unit. Some good options are the Enermax Revolution85+ 1050W, Corsair HX1000, and Silverstone OP-1000E and DA-1000.

Some good companies are Corsair, Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, Antec (except for the Smartpower and older Truepower lines), Seasonic, Silverstone, Thermaltake (Toughpower series), and BFG (LS, MX, ES, and EX lines - not GS or GX). As for your budget, you will definitely be able to obtain a quality PSU to suit your needs within that price range.

Oklahoma Wolf thought the X3 Booster was okay, but fairly loud. Better than 2% Voltage regulation, ~80% efficient normally and below 30mV ripple.

I personally would just buy a new PSU though.

Zalman HP series are selling pretty cheap now that the XT series are out. ZM1000-HP is on newegg for $215 now. BFG EX-1200 when it comes back in stock is a good buy at $250, even cheaper than the HX1000.

For now I am using the tv speakers. I literally just put this entire setup together a few months ago and I am currently without work. The plan is to get 2 6 inch studio monitors though.

Keyboard and Mouse are both hidden in the sliding tray. :)

I am finally looking to get that new PSU, as i will be getting some nice paychecks this summer now that I am working full time vs part time. I have a silverstone case so would like to go with silverstone PSU (since you also recommended one). I looked it up, the price is very nice it says compatible with I7 Cores, im assuming that just meansit works with Core 2 Duo/s Quads AND i7 cores.. not just the i7's. Just wanted to make sure before i plopped down the money for it ;).

Just because you have a Silverstone case doesn't mean you should necessarily get a Silverstone PSU. There are other better units out there, although the Silverstone is still a pretty good one.

Yes, it'll work fine with any halfway recent system.

I know I don't need to use a silverstone PSU with the case, but why not, I love my case ;).

as for halfway recent system, my first post says the specs ;). (will be getting the new PSU, a new CPU chip, new vid card)
