I am looking to purchase a notebook in the ~$400 range. I could spend up to $500, but i don't think that i need to.

I am mainly looking to use the computer to take with me to class, type notes, surf the web, etc.

The largest notebook i would like would be a 15.4" (but thats almost too big) and i would really like something in the 12.1-14.1" range.

I would like it to have 2hrs+ battery life.

I had looked into the asus eeepc and everex cloudbook a lot, but don't think i will be able to use a computer with such a small screen.

I don't care if it is used or new, or where i have to purchase it from.

Currently, I think i am just going to have to wait for a BB notebook deal to pop up, I am just hoping that there will be a deal out there i am unaware of.

Thanks for any help,

Ebay will find you an endless number of good deals on used laptops. It doesn't sound like you need Ultimate Power. My IBM Thinkpad X24 has served me well over the last two years, and I paid about $300 for it; for your budget, there's a ton of computers which will do you nicely.

If you'd be willing to get and Apple, I would look into a 12" iBook or Powerbook G4.

I have a 1.5ghz Powerbook and am currently using it as my main computer. I gets two and a half hours from the original battery and three and a half from my new battery. And the Powerbook's keyboard is awesome (same one as the Mackbook Pros). I actually prefer to type on it over my desktop, so if you'll be typing a lot, that's something to consider. Don't let people tell you not to get a PowerPC-based Mac. At least through Leopard Apple will continue to recommend Universal support, so new programs will work on it for at least another two years. Size-wise it is very small. Its an inch thinker than the Air, but is narrower so I consider it to take up less space than the Air.

I've seen them go in the $400-$500 range. I got mine for $420, though you might have to look a bit to get one of the later models that low. Hope this helps.

Yep there are many good deals with your 500 dollar budget, for ultimate mobility I carry around my tiny internet Tablet N800 (under 200 dollars) and I have a bluetooth keyboard for it. i can take it anywhere adn type out papers, or surf the net, and it's just tiny. Great sound, integrated webcam too. I'm selling a N810 actually. (n810 has slide out keyboard and GPS)

I used some small Averatec notebooks. They are ok for what they are, but nothing spectacular. They come in 12.1" and 13.3"

I actually had looked into the N800 and N810's, but i run into the same problems with screen resolution, at only 800x480 i don't think i will be satisfied with the screen real estate. Although i have heard good things about using a bluetooth keyboard with them.

I have been trying to hunt down a used Averatec notebook for some time now, they used to make a 10.6" model that i really liked. (almost purchased one new, but they were too much for my budget)

Thanks again for all the suggestions, and so far the IBM is looking like my best bet.

After looking through that site again, I still think i'd be happier with the build of a T40

I'm looking for something similar and pretty much decided on a used X41 or X60 with an 8cell battery I think it is. My old roomate had a X41 and he got something like 6-7 hours of battery life on his which I thought was awesome.

I'm not sure to either of your question...I think the warranty question can be answered in the FAQ of the dfsdirectsales

Wow, I hadn't seen the news about that. 8.9" with a resolution of 1024x600. Not a huge jump, but that should be a lot more usable.

Releasing mid-2008 with a price tag of $600? Too much $, Too late (I bet there will be some serious competitors by then)

Thanks

I'll just link since the credit isn't mine. But I have this one myself its a nice machine for the money. The dual core one is the best deal but if you want the cheapest possible just grap the sempy and make sure you get XP and you will have an excellent note taker

that looks like a good deal. I don't think it's available at my local Wal-mart though

Man...a lot of pretty darn good deals on 12.1" laptops. Pentium M's all around, but still sub-$500 for a decent system.

Looks like these are the best bang for the buck, right now. Got a 12.1" headed my way for $474 shipped - should be here tomorrow. For a 1.9ghz / 1G / 60G / 1024x780 / XP Pro subnotebook with external CD... dang... that is a lot of computer for a small form factor laptop.

that looks like a good deal. I don't think it's available at my local Wal-mart though

go and find out. once u remove all the junk software this computer is damn fast for $500
