Suddenly lost E4300 overclock....

I have been struggling with this for a few days so i thought i'd poll the forum for ideas. I've been running an E4300 at 3.0 ghz for the last two years and a few days ago I suddenly lost the overclock and everything went back to stock settings. I haven't made any hardware changes and the only thing i can remember doing is running windows update. Normally, my system would be:

E4300 @ 3.0 ghz (9 x 333)
Gigabyte 965p-ds3 rev 2.0 (F13)
4 gb ddr2 @ 667, 4-4-4-12
windows 7 RTM

When i try to change FSB frequency past the default (200 mhz) the bios accepts the changes and my system restarts but the CPU frequency doesnt change. If i go back into the bios i see that the changes were saved but I still get the stock clock. I've already tried clearing the CMOS, upgrading/downgrading bios (tried F12 and F14), using easytune 5 instead of making changes in bios with no luck. Does anyone have an ideas?

Hiya, long time no hear from you.

I have to ask, did you bump the CPU voltage back up ? Try leaving everything on auto for voltages and let it do its reboot and cycle thing for at least 4 "loops". If that happens to work then go back in and reduce voltages to more reasonable values, those boards tended to set voltages higher than really needed. Also you may need to "sneak up" on the 333 fsb in 20MHz increments instead of just jumping from stock to 333 as the board sets up a lot more timings etc. than the ones shown in the bios.

More than likely you have already tried this but need to know for sure.

I knew you had a gigabye board just from the thread title. this is the gigabye stupid mode that has been around for all of their core2 motherboards in varying degrees. you need to shut off the power supply, pull the cmos battery, reset the cmos jumper, then wait about 15 minutes, put the cmos battery back in, turn the power supply back on, then enter the bios and it will accept your settings.

if that fails, you are screwed.

holy balls i cant believe that worked. thanks a lot! everything is back to normal now.
 
Yup, core2 gigabyte boards and their wonky ass bios.
