Eh.. inuendo = srry... couldn't help it.

NEway, I have an SP90 with a 42CFM 92mm. My case is pretty plain jane - no flowcontrol/etc. I want maximum cooling for OC. I am unconcerned with the sound factor, it it matters.

Shall I suck air through my HS or blow air onto it?

However another question :eek: .... is some good thermal paste a better bet than "lapping" (400-600-1500 grit) for 30 - 40 mins? Mind you I was rather disappointed with my sp-90 base and quick-smoothed it. By "good" I mean my Geil copper compound stuff.
 
*Always* run thermal compound. It fills in the microscopic gaps that are present even on the best-lapped heatsinks. With a better lap however, you can get away with slightly less TIM.

try BOTH and use which ever one gives you better performance :rolleyes:
 
What he said! Some have actually found that on the xp90 or xp120 that sucking is better.
 
I don't know about the sink, but fans are designed to be more efficient pulling (sucking) air.

This web site says it all. Convection is dependent on the density of the fluid. A blowing fan increases the air density, while a sucking fan decreases the air density. The degree of density change depends on the air resistance in the stream.

I cannot make any claims about the fan's efficiency one way or the other.

Come to think of it, all fans suck; use water-cooling.
 
Phase change cooling will work better than anything.

Try them both. Then post your results.

(And back on track...) I have a 80mm Alpha PAL in mine and that uses a shrowd to suck air off my CPU. I've never tried blowing air down onto the cpu with that sink. Anyway it never passes 50C and under is constant load (SETI@home). When it does reach 50C I then get the air duster out and give it a quick clean and the temps drop a few degrees again (Shroud+Dust = bad).
 
Pulling air off of the Cpu. So an additional fan can blow that back out of the rear exhausts.

Also, helps keep dust from collecting in the heatsink that way, as oppossed to blowing all the junk down in there.

But it's all up to individual preference.

The problem is most people go by "feeling" rather than science. Hence, colorful cases sell better, and functional cases might not.
On the other hand - being good in science does not mean you can be good at games; got a good "feel" you could beat most people in games. ;)

However, that's somewhat dependent on different configurations. I wonder what two people have precisely the same cooling set-ups, in precisely the same environment, then can duplicate their results precisely. Outside of a lab that is.

In my particular cooling set-up, it's not feasible to have the fan blow down on the CPU. The fan is mounted on the side of the copper fins, on the heatpipe, blowing back-out through the exhaust. And it's doing just fine. And I rather like the idea of the heated air being exhausted out in that fashion.

For those with a blow hole on the side of the case taking -in cool air for the video card, then having the air pulled-off the cpu may not be a good idea. Since the air flow would be fighting each other.

It depends. So to an extent, it's still up to individual preference. That's not a bad thing.
