Hey guys, I have a ~4 year old pc that I need a new video card for. I was actually gonna be building myself a new system soon but cash is a bit tight for me right now, so I just want a cheap card to hold me over for a bit. Right now I have a 7800gtx that overheats pretty much every time I run solitaire, so haven't been able to play any pc games for a while.

I've been looking around the forums and the more popular cheap card seems to be the AMD 4670. Anyone know how its performance to my current card? I don't mind if its comparable, but it'd be nice to get a little performance upgrade too.

Also since my pc is old I'm afraid that the more powerful cards are gonna get bottlenecked. I'm using an AMD Athlon X2 4800+. So just need some suggestions, I'm willing to go up to $100, but not any higher than that. Thanks

According to Tom's Hardware Guide benchmarks, the 4670 outperforms the 9600gso in every game tested.

I'd go for a HD 3870. It's better than the HD 4670.

You can get them used for around $70.

Odd. I own both cards, and the HD4670 (GDDR3) has been slower every time for me (vs the 9600GSO 768MB). Although mine a PNY which claims to be OC'd from the factory.

Hmm, strange. Could be their setup wasn't as good with the card as yours is. What's the OC on your 9600?

The 8800gs rebrand version of the 9600gso (96SP, 192bit bus) ended up being slower than the 9600GT (64SP, 256bit bus) in games due to the crimped memory bus.
None of the other 9600gso variants (48SP/256bit bus & 96SP/128bit bus) come close the the 8800gs rebrand.

The 9600GT is just a smidgen under the HD4670 (ddr3 version, of course).

I'm running a lowly e6600, they're running a QX9770.

Overclock3D paints a slightly different picture.

Not sure on the O/C. I'm not at my desktop ATM.

The 9600GSO has always resulted in smoother gameplay vs the HD4670 (less FPS inconsistencies). My 512mb HD4670 (GDDR3 still) was also slower than my friend's eVGA 9600GT. I'm not sure what's going on.

curses, I'm wrong.

Yeah, by that OC3D.net review, there's really not enough of a difference to take one over the other. In that case, I would just go for whatever one I could find cheaper. Both are great budget cards regardless.
