Does orthos or similar programs like occt stress the chipset as much as it would be in a very intensive game?

As much or more as most games will not run the cpu at 95-100% utilization all the time and zoning or loading a new level give the cpu a break.

Now a game will stress the computer in a whole different way with a wider variety of cpu instructions, memory access etc. but probally over an hour not cause as much heat. And of course Orthos etc. does nothing to stress the graphics card/system.

So its really not something one can apples to apples compare. Run Orthos for 6 hours then try your game. The ultimate stability test for you as a user is to be able to do what you want to do with the machine for as long as you wish without the machine having an issue.

I think he actually means the chipset... like the northbridge and southbridge chips.
I run Prime95 and it gets my temps on my chipset higher than anything else. I would assume it's stressing it because of the temps.

Games are the things that stress the PC as a whole the most. Sure, they won't necessarily get things the hottest, but I've seen so many cases where individual utilities get a cpu or whatever really hot, but stably, whereas a modern game on the same PC crashes.

I used to use HL2 as a good chipset tester for my ropey nf3 mobo when I had 4 sticks of ram in it. All cpu, mem, utils and atitool would check out fine, but HL2 would crash horribly.
