I've built a retro PC with the following configuration:

  • 1.4 GHz Pentium III-S (Tualatin core)
  • Asus TUSL2-C mobo
  • 512 MB Crucial PC-133 RAM
  • 80 GB Western Digital HDD
  • Lite-On DVD burner
  • ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/ 128 MB of RAM
  • Sound Blaster Live
  • Antec case w/ 420W PC Power & Cooling Silencer PSU
  • Thermaltake Volcano 7+ heatsink
  • Zalman NB heatsink

I'm planning on using Win98 SE.

I'm using both the latest version of MPrime (Linux's equivalent of Prime95) and StressCPU, both of which are on the Ultimate Boot CD.

Which CPU-stressing program is recommended for the Pentium III and the Athlon XP? I've read that the latest Prime95/MPrime builds would be worse for the P3: "Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III users should see dramatically WORSE performance. Run version 23 instead."

nice setup my last chip before I got into the modern ones was a P3 866 coppermine, clocked to just under 1Ghz with a 3dfx voodoo 3 2500/3000/3500(it was one of them just haven't dug out the card in a very long time :p)

What about LinX for stress?

Wow I just made today a Retro PC too just to have fun with oldie W95 Games (Cyberia, Hoover, Descent and descent 2.. etc etc).

  • Pentium 4 1.7GHZ Willamette 180nm
  • Intel D865GA
  • 768mb RAM DIMM PC-133
  • Geforce 6600AGP

I've Used for the case a oldie compaq Presario 7111LA and a standard Evercool p4 Cooler for the Socket 423. the only test i made with any related temp was with Everest Ultimate Edition it work Flawless.

I forgot to mention that I currently wiped the hard drive, as I plan to reinstall Win98.

I tried running IntelBurnTest (which also uses Linpack, albeit an outdated version of it) on it (prior to wiping the drive), but for some reason, it finished quickly.

Doesn't any Linpack-based stress test need a CPU w/ SSE2 support (e.g., a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64)?

Back to the topic: Does Prime95 stress SSE1? I know that StressCPU stresses SSE1, and I thought that it would stress the CPU more than Prime95/MPrime.

heck the cooler I currently use on my E8400 (thermaltake silent 775d) is an older cooler meant for P4 and works awesome :p

just a quick goggle search
"Prime95 can't use SSE "1". I'm not positive, but I think it has to do with the lack of double precision in SSE1."

cpu burn in is another that apparently works fine with 95/98

there is also older versions of Aida that will as well

The Coppermine/Tualatin days were some of my favorite. I had a few nice setups back then. I was really big into Celeron overclocking, I had a Coppermine Celeron 600@1060ish, Coppermine 1100@1400ish, and a Tualatin 1400@1600.

I love it.

My first hardcore build had two 1.4ghz 512k tualatin engineering samples in an iWill board on ddr. Custom WC loop with a radiator out of a CRX strapped to the case. Was one mean machine at the time. Also sprung a leak and earned me my nickname :( That was a sad day.

sorry for asking but is this the cartridge P3?

someone correct me if I am mistaken, I doubt it

iirc the tually S 512 was only in the FC-PGA2/370 package

& @ crispy, that was indeed an epic rig, I have heard many tales of similar setups being useful well into the core2 era

we need a "retro" subforum here

thats correct, Tualatin was only Socket 370...

the cartridge P3 was the Katmai just before the Coppermine and tualatin that changed to S370. I have still one of those Katmai Pentium 3 Slot 1 working.. =D.
