Hi, I have built so many computers, but i just encountered this strange problem and i can't figure out how to get it to work.

i just recently puchased a new 9800 pro, and I have a OLD computer that laid around, so i took out my Geforce Ti-4200 and put it in that computer, but whenever i get in windows, the computer will freeze when loading the trayicons. so i tried to reformat the computer, when it finished installation and boot to window for the first time, it froze again and gave me a error something like this "please reconfigure ur config.sys and try again" it was something like that, much longer tho, i couldn't remember exactly what it was.
then i tried to put the old Voodoo 3dfx card in, and it works fine.
is it because the system is too old for the new video card? help me here, thanks!!!

the system is: AMD K6 450, maybe the asus board, 192mb ram, windows 98 se
 
AGP Voltages? 3.3v or 1.5v? Check them, they maybe incorrect or unsupportive on the motherboard. Its possible that the motherboard does not supply the right power for the card to operate stable.

Next thing i would look at is your AGP speed multiplier. 1x 2x 4x or Auto. Maybe different settings will help things out.

Short of that i have no idea where to look next.
 
Although it wouldn't cause your system to lock up like that, you should completely remove all of your video drivers before you install new ones. I imagine you installed catalyst 43 drivers for the 9800 right?

well he tried it in a different computer which he formatted and reinstalled windows on so i think he probably used the right drivers
 
I'm bettting that the Radeon is 1.5 volt and the board only runs 3.3 on the AGP slot. I'm surprised the system even booted. I guess I could be wrong since it did boot up but until you have a bit more info than I can give you, I'm not sure I would try to run the card in there.
 
Sounds like a power issue, either from the AGP, or maybe even from the PSU itself. The config file might be loading drivers and failing because of the lack of power to support the hardware. That would happen in both an old and fresh install.

On a side note: Why are you putting a 9800 PRO inside of a K6? that TI-4200 isn't being pushed by that system either...
