Strange IDE drive problems

I'm trying to help a family friend fix a strange issue with his harddisks. He uses a SFF SNG95v3 shuttle box and he recently bought a new seagate PATA 320GB disk. Now he has an old seagate drive in there as well.

Now the weird thing is that when he installed the new harddrive, everything went fine and dandy. BUT his old drive now is only recognized as 32GB max. I've tried reformatting, updating the bios, and even going into seatools DOS to set the max capacity of the drive but it fails and is unable to set the max size at all.

Does anybody have any ideas?

I'm not seeing that model number on the shuttle website, do you know how old the motherboard is?

Are the two drives in the same ide cable? Did he play around with any of the drive jumpers when moving them around? Possibly trying to set a drive to master/slave and accidentally setting it to capacity limited instead?

He doesn't have any jumpers setup I believe. It's been so long since I've worked with IDE that I don't know the correct configs to set master/slave. If he accidentally set it to CL, does he have to reformat it or do you just need to take the jumper off?

I don't believe you mentioned the size of the old drive but it's possible that the drive is old enough that the drive firmware isn't happy with either the chipset or OS.

You might want to pop over to segate's site and download the newest utility (it's the same as everyone elses utility but usually they only work on manufacture's drive you are working on.).

Boot into the utility and have it examine the drive to see what gives. These utilities are overlooked by many people but they work very well to delete undeletable partitions with a few simple clicks.

Above all, DO NOT use the special BIOS extender they (everyone) suggest to allow for more space on the drive. That thing is for sure butt biter these days.

It's also possible he only has a 40 gig drive....;)

Luck;)

Some ide drives have a jumper setting that makes them lie and report their capacity as 32GB so old motherboards don't flip out. There is an illustration here.

The drive original size is liek 150. I'll try to update the firmware on teh drive.
