Strange CPU multipler issue

Anyone have any clue as to why my Multiplier is jumping from x6 to x9 . What could be causing this.

motherboard is an P5K-E series.

I guess it's worth mentioning, that I have overclocked to the x9 multiplier, it's been stable for a year or so until I just reinstalled windows XP. I am thinking it's the chipset driver that I failed to install.

Its power saving, disable C1E in the bios. Check the other related bios settings regarding reducing the mulitplier to save power when not under load.
 
Once you know what it is, why would you want to disable it?

It seems like a good feature to me, running cooler/quieter when not under load, saving power. All good unless there is something I am missing.

It depends on the software that is used. Some programs do not trigger the boost until the CPU utilization at the reduced multiplier goes full (an example is some video editing/rendering programs). Under less than full load, the CPU multiplier remains at the lowest setting! This will slow down the program's performance more than necessary. Blame poorly written code in those programs for this.

I think it is a load trigger in the CPU itself that determines this, or at best the BIOS, it isn't going to be Apps that control when the CPU ramps up.

I leave this on, and I form what I have seen it ramps under any significant load.
 
Windows 7 has greatly improved the speed that a CPU ramps up when using SpeedStep. In XP and Vista, there could be a 25% CPU load and depending on the nature of that load, the multiplier might still be stuck at its minimum of 6.
 
With such high clocks on some people's computer, does anyone keep this turned on? 4.0ghz +
I'm concerned about random voltage changes which can lock up my computer, so I keep this setting off.
