Store library on HTPC

Well I know it's possible to store all your movies from DVDs onto an HTPCs hard drive, assuming you have the space for it. What I am wanting is something that's more or less automatic.

Basically, put DVD in.
Starts ripping DVD to hdd automatically.

Maybe even have a step in between asking if you want to store the DVD or not

I have a friend that has around 200 DVDs, he'd like to get them all stored onto a HTPC so he can easily browse to whatever movie he wants to watch; however I'm not about to take the time to rip all those DVDs for him and he's not really good enough with computers to do it himself.

I *think* that is only for MyMovies for WHS, not sure if it's also in the WMC version

How do you want to store the DVDs? ISO,MKV,Video_TS?
These aren't quite automated but are very easy to use.
  • MakeMKV - rip DVD as MKV, all you have to do is select Title then HDD location and click start.
  • ImgBurn - rip as ISO, pretty much insert DVD and select location as well.
 
They make hardware solutions that will idiot-proof it as you wanted, but they tend to be a waste of money. I'd rather just manually rip the 200 DVD's myself. Guess it depends on how good of a friend you are? :)

I took a second look at the MyMovies website, One thing to note is the DVD Copier costs points or contirbutions

Reading this sounds like it's only on WHS

Then Reading this sounds like there's a version for WMC but the automated version is only on WHS

Either way, there's a cost to factor in.
 
I use MyMovies...only on WMC...you put in a disc and it does the work...but there is still significant setup. I have well over 600 titles, mostly blu-ray but some DVD, ripped to HDD (ISO, MKV, folders for DVD). I can watch them on several machines in my house over my network (simple Win7 home networking, no WHS). I've been ripping for months, though...in fact, I'm ripping Game of Thrones as I type this...ripping to MKV using MakeMKV. Then will import these into MyMovies and it will show up in WMC. Its not hard...but its not automatic, either. I would not do this for anyone else but me....certainly not some dude. :)
