Hi all... First i want to say some of you have some awesome bulids. And it looks like you are pro's most of you.

So what i need is too get some more storage in my bulild. Atm i only have 6 TB and i am planning to add another 12 TB. The problem is that i only have 2 more sata ports in my mobo to use for harddrives. So i will need a "raid/sata controller" But i dont know what to get. I am not planning to use raid atm ( i am not sure yet )

I have heard that some controllers dont support drives bigger then 1.5 TB and i am getting samsung F4EG drives (like the others i have) so i need a controller that support 2 TB drives ofc.

My setup:
q9550
Asus P5Q3
4 GB DDR3
GTX 260
750 W psu
OS: WIn7 x64

i have no idea how those PCI PCIx1 and PCI Express 2,0 works etc I just know that i use 1 PCI exprees 2,0 for my gfx card. So if someone can help me find a good choice for this i would be really greatfull.... I hope that i have posted the info needed, else i would be happy to provide more info ofc
 
The cheapest enclosure would probably be the Norco RPC-450 that holds 13 drives for $93 shipping included and includes a RAID SATA 6 Gb/s card until tomorrow.
Just replace all fans with silent ones with removable filters, add a magnet to the door and a PSU, maybe more sonic insulation, and tape the sharp edges.
Unscrew the handles to use it as a tower case instead of a bulky rack server and paint it black to get a RPC-450B!

I'd probably just install the RAID card or rather an HBA and SAS expander in your existing case and a cable between the 2 cases to use it as a DAS for a start.
You can upgrade the case to a full NAS later, I don't have any experience on SAS expanders and the cables required, but there's plenty of information in this forum.
Or you can build a full NAS right away if you have the budget, of course. The important thing is to start separating your desktop machine from your storage server.
 
Weel i have a case for it, I am just gonna use my 800D case, i am gonna buy a 3 5,25 to 4 3.25 slots bay converter to add in my 800D case... I basic just needs to find out wich raid/sata controller i should get and there fits into my motherbord i have no idea which one i should get. Becuse i am to total noob with those wired pci pci exprees things...
 
Well your motherboard has a second PCI-E x16 slot. That's good since you're gonna need that for most hardware controller cards since many uses either a PCI-E x4 or PCI-E x8 interface (yes PCI-E x4 and PCI-E x8 will fit and run in a PCI-E x16 slot). Since most PCI-E x1 slots on consumer grade motherboards are not opened up in the front and therefore allowing for longer cards, additional PCI-E x16 slots are necessary.

Now, you need to figure out whether or not you're gonna use RAID or not. Here are regular storage controllers:
$100 - SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI-Ex4 8 Port SATA Controller Card
$155 - Intel SASUC8I PCI-Ex8 SATA/SAS Controller Card

You'll need two of the following cables for the above cards:
$15 - 3ware SFF-8087 to Multi-lane SATA Forward Break-out Cable

And here are some budget true hardware RAID controllers:
$430 - HighPoint RocketRAID 4320 PCI-Ex8 8 Port SATA and SAS RAID Card
$470 - arece ARC-1222 PCI-Ex4 8 Port SATA and SAS RAID Card

See the huge price difference?
 
Okay i dont think that i want go with a raid setup, i think it is very expensive cards. So i think that i am going with:

Intel SASUC81 RAID SAS Controller PCIe
2 X DELTACO Multilane SAS-kabel SFF-8087 til 4xSATA 7-pin, 50cm
Lian Li EX-23NB Storage Bay Adapter (For 3 x 3.5" HDD extension Using 2 x 5.25" bay)

And then i am getting a bunch of disks too, Atm i am thining of the F4EG 2 TB drives, but if anyone know a better drive for this storrage use please let me know. And i am going with that deltaco multilane sas kabel becuase it has 4xsata, it think it will fint in the card too, but i would like if anyone can confirm it for me ? Else does it seems like a good idea so far ?
 
Find out exactly if those exact Deltaco cables are forward breakout or reverse break out cables. You want the forward break-out cables.
 
I just need a cable that allows me to connect 4 drives with one Multilane SAS-kabel thingy i read that the controller can handle up to 8 drives wich means to get the max out of it i need to get those other cabels... So i can connect 8 drives total too the controller...

one other thing is that i will need more power sticks to the harddrives, what is the best way to power them up ? i have 2 free sata power things on my PSU so i will need a way to get more ? i know there is some molex adapters but i heard that is no good ? so should i get some of these:

We understand that. What you don't understand that is that the cable you listed to is missing one critical piece of information: Whether or not it's a forward or backward breakout cable. Look at the cable I linked to earlier: Notice how it says "Forward" right there in the name? That's the cable you want. However, there's a very similiar looking cable out there but with "Backwards" rather than "Forwards" in the name. Unfortunately the cable you listed has neither of that information.

So YOU have to find out if the cable you linked to is either a Forwards or Backwards breakout cable. Remember that they look the same. So you have to look at the name or specifications for that cable to find out whether you selected the forward or backwards breakout cable. A "Backwards" Breakout cable will not work.
