Storage units? Free power maybe?

Any chance that you get power with a storage unit, or a light that you can put the socket adapter in and get power from without getting kicked out of your unit? I have never had one and am not finding any info on this?

5x5 seems nearly perfect for a rack and wireless internet would be a must for the systems. Thoughts?
 
In my experience with storage units you don't have an outlet or a light socket you can take over. Also the contract for the storage unit may explicitly forbid doing anything like you are talking about.
 
Solar is out of my range. Colocation seems unlikely and a waste. Renting a cheap apartment with free electricity is not possible. I am thinking of how to dig a line over to the green belt and somehow get the HOA power. /jk!
 
You might want to look around for different units. My brother had a unit where they put an adapter into the light socket and they practiced their music. They definitely pulled a lot of power.
 
I had a storage unit for a couple of years until I moved into my current place. It had the light socket I could have pulled power from and it also has a regular wall socket in it which I could have used. However, what you have to worry about is the power being sucked from the place. While I'm sure there aren't separate meters on each unit, the manager is going to start wondering why the power bill for the units went sky high compared to what it was before which could get you in trouble.

 
Assuming you could do this (and get away with the power drain), how do you plan to get the systems online?
 
in my last Storage unit, I ran a 100ft Extension cable to the office so I could run a light and my airbrush.. but generally they wont let u have electricity in the unit.. too much liability
 
Some places will let you, most won't. Some even have metered units (not what you want if you're looking for free power, but just FYI).

Do NOT use a power adapter or otherwise use power w/o permission... the lease you sign (likely) gives them all manner of recourse against you for such action.

If they become aware of power theft, they can lock out your unit (you can't get in to get your stuff.. i.e. computers) until you pay or settle the matter in court.

So far I can get climate controlled pretty easy. Now I need a power source and a way to connect to the internet.
 
If you get a unit close to the office just ask. They might have wireless internet available, esp. if you're going to be a long term client. ..Clients that expect to use the service for a year or more get all sorts of perks available to them (discounts, free sodas, ...and if they wanted it, internet for folding :D ) You may also just ask if they have a powered unit or, could get an outlet added, for an extra charge every month. I know that has happened before when a guy wanted to be able to power a table saw and he was a year-at-a-shot client.

Again, don't screw with them. They have the legal right to lock you out of your stuff if you aren't in compliance with your lease. Just be upfront and bring coffee and you'd be amazed what you get.

Your best bet (by far) if you can't just find a facility with outlets is to go to a non-mainstream place. "Public Storage" or "U-Haul" isn't going to work with you like "Jone's Corner Storage Plaza"

Or maybe find one of the providers that you could "hint" that you wanted to "grow stuff".

That way they would think you were growing cannabis while you were folding like the dickens!
