my parents have become angry at the amount of electricity we're using, and i've become tired of my room being a constant 85 F, so i'm going to stop folding for now.

i'll probably start back in the winter, when i can just open my window.

i'm letting my last work unit finish up first though.

 
sorry to hear that, but in the end it's your choice. Glad to see you back in the winter.
 
farewell, my parents are pissed at my electricity usage right now. we're already in the 3rd tier so its 15 cents a kwh. comes to like $1k a year or so. so i'm going to either talk them into letting me keep it and lessening their annual charity, or me streamlining my farm. both ways it sucks :mad:

Hell, we've got a damn heat wave here. It's been in the 50's and stayed above freezing one night. I think it's the end of the world.

And I'm glad I don't have to worry about the electricity bill. Mine has yet to even reach $70 in usage in a month. I picked my apartment well. It's a bit cool in the winter but the boxen help with the heating and it stays rather cool in the summer without having to run the A/C constantly.

 
Its colder than a brass monkey's butt here...........so the machine's heat is welcome.
If we can solve disease by a few pennies a day for the juice, it's worth it.
I'm adding another box this weekend.:D
 
How many computers? Your ppd isn't equal to 1 p4-2.8/800fsb. If you have some $$$ you can build an efficent computer (1) and have better ppd.

If you could do a 939 X2 (4400)setup, you could run Linux and the SMP client and net around 900ppd!!
 
Maybe even get some Mobile processors. My laptop only costs 68 cents a week to run. Efficient power supplys also pay of in the long run.
 
i only use my desktop to fold on, but we have 3 other computers running most of the time.

it's more the heat disperesed=more AC needed= more power=more money

we're just trying to cut back.

texas summers are expensive electricity wise.
 
Why not fold on the other three? Turn yours off? I borged my moms and she didn't even remember after a month that she agreed to it! Didn't know any difference!
 
I would suggest getting the higher efficiency power supplies. They aren't kidding when they say it cuts the heat down. My CPU temps dropped from 64C to 59C. The air coming from the case is luke warm at best.

Mine was $575 last month.. which was nice until I got the $800 gas bill to top it off.. It made me so mad I turned on 3 more Servers, 2 more laptops and 4 more desktops just to spite them..I figure if I stay in that one room and can stand the noise I can turn the heat down to 50 in the rest of the house and save at least as much in gas as I am using in electricity. Now to figure out how to move the 2 babies cribs into my office and convince my wife that this is a good thing
 
I guess it is expensive to cure cancer ;)

Anyways living in Alberta to right now it is -12c and snowing. It is nice having 2 PCs running folding and a 24 port switch running.
 
I have my electric bill auto-debited because it got too painful to look at. Two 42u racks full of electric sucking gizmos will do that. Right now all the UPS's are showing a constant pull of 1.2 kW, so about .10 every hour :(

Still cheap compared to hearing another person has/succumbed to cancer :mad:

Heh, I feel you dude. I'm in Houston, and I've got the two left-most machines in my sig in my bedroom, and DAMN it gets hot in here in the summer time. Gonna have to do something about that. Winter is so great though, window wide open, nice and cozy :p

I'd say it's more like 9 months of the year :D At least the Chinook winds helps quite a bit during those long winter periods.
 
So you're telling me your PPD of ~100 is causing a $400 power bill? Come on, get serious for a moment. Unless your folding with downclocked (as in 800MHz) Prescotts, then what you're suggesting is in no way possible. Hell, I ran five computers, one with dual procs, 24/7 at my old apartment and that added maybe $40/mo to my power bill and added barely any heat, if at all. And if you're simply folding on already existing machines? Sheesh. Then just turn them off when not in use and keep folding going for when they are in use.

Idunno, I guess I'm sick of people saying "I quit!" for whatever reason, rather than just bowing out quietly and gracefully, and then blaming heat or power. If you had a folding farm, yes, I'd be more liable to take the argument of the $400 power bill.

Either way, when your parents pull their heads out of their asses, hopefully you can fold again.

 
I really envy you Canadians. I'm a native Wisconsinite stuck in Houston, and I long for those long, cold winters.

One machine can't be contributing that much to an electricity bill. Even at 200W and $0.15/kWh, that's only about $22/mo. If the other machines aren't folding, but are on all the time, consider turning them off instead of turning off the machine that's actually doing something useful.

Another thing to consider would be to sell your current hardware and take the money to build a C2D or X2 machine that will consume a lot less electricity and produce a lot more ppd.

My parents aren't so mad as I am tired of sweating whilst being in my room for more than 5 minutes.

I'll be back when it's cold enough to open the windows.
 
I had to stop folding on my laptop and home computer, but my work computer is now borged and it probably does more than both of those home computers
 
ok, i cant let this go any longer, this is totally off topic of the thread, but what is folding exactly?!
 
I can see where some of the people are coming from. my room is a steady 75 to 80F (its about 50 to 60F outside) with a C2d rig and a laptop folding 24/7. once summer rolls around theres no way i can have those machines running or i'll be roasted nice and crispy. the powerbill is also a problem because my Kill-a-watt counter says i'm using about 0.75 kwh per hour. (is that the right way to show that?) in my garage farm times $0.1537 per kwh. about $2.77 a day, $83 a month, $1012 a year. thats like have a second car insurance bill to pay almost.

so tsuehpsyde, some people do have to deal with parents and the reality of spending money. It's not easy to justify that cost. Yes, it is for the good of medicine, but we already donate to many charities during the year so fah now will either be killed in my house, or get $1k taken away from the UC Davis Childrens Hospital. so take your head out of your ass before going off on someone who is being forced to leave the team.
 
I dont have separate computers set aside for folding, nor the money to build them, but it seems interesting. just wondering if i could fold on my home computer, and if it would help at all?

You can have some of our heat. Only during the summer, though. It's a lovely 75 degrees today, too bad I'm stuck in the office.

I wonder if we can build a heat pipe big enough...
 
Heat is no excuse. My plan in the summer is to move my AMD 3500+ into my furnace room during summer. I just have to run a little cable there and everything should be great.

The fact that you have a furnace room tells me you have never known a solid month of 100+ temps, so you don't know what real heat is :D

i've walked to the mailbox and back during the middle of summer, and even though it's about 50 feet round trip, i'd start sweating.
 
Heat is 125 deg for the high and 100deg for the low for 4 months of the year while living in a tent and having to drink 6-7gal of water a day to keep hydrated. I'm glad I don't do that any more.
 
last summer we had a week where the temps were at 116F high and the AC was running 24/7 and barely keeping the house manageable. a walk to a mailbox and back is unthinkable. haha furnace rooms are unheard of almost.

The problem with humidity is that you don't sweat off heat; the air is saturated so the sweat, and the heat it traps, stays on your skin and just makes you miserable. I've been in a 115+ degree desert, and I much prefer it to 100 degrees here with 98% humidity. In the desert at least you can lose the heat via sweat.

edit: I haven't run folding since I moved my computer into this room that's barely more than a closet. My CPU running wide open can easily push the temp in here up to 85+. I've already got a tower fan in a corner to move some air, but without central A/C (which won't be running until mid-March at least, it's not *that* warm yet) the room gets no airflow.
