Are you using Firefox? If so, install flashblock:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

The only flash items allowed to play are the ones you click on. You'll see what I mean when you try it out.

And BTW what flash heavy sites are you going to anyway?

for a IE alternative I suggest using AvantBrowser. I'm a FireFox user but when I need to run IE I use AvantBrowser. It has a built in flash blocker among many other things.

That's great. Seems to work very well. http://www.espn.com/ has a good bit of flash on it.
