I've never had an ATI video card, but that might be changing in less than 1 month from now.

Mostly based on performance/price (value), but this annoyance (UMAP) didn't help either.
 
Update : I've managed to stay nVidia free (aside from the old ones I already had) since I started the thread. ATi's made it real easy ever since the days of the 3850. The 8800GT was pretty kick-ass, but, since then, there's been no need to look nVida's way :D

Personally, I prefer that competition drive innovation. I'd say, it's worked very well, considering the price performance of cards like the 5750, a couple years down the road from when this thread first started.
 
This is ridiculous. Minimum Advertised Price is very common in the electronics field.

While it's not beneficial to the consumer, it is beneficial to the middle man.

Think of it like WoW. Wise people will undercut a 20g item by 50c, or 1s... but then there are those assholes that cut the price down to 10g. Everyone has such a hard time making money on their craft or material gathering because some butthead decided to saturate the market.

MAP is a non-predatory, and by no mean bulletproof, method of keeping the middle man profitable. Of course, in the land of Wal-Mart, who gives a hoot about the middleman.

I currently have a ATi card but my previous cards were Nvidia, but if when I upgrade Nvidia has a better card for hte money, I will buy it. Not gonna stop buying nvidia products, sorry

Lol a WoW economics comparison.. I dunno why the guy providing the good deal for the consumers is the bad guy though ;) If he can saturate the market at lower operating expense then either the crafters are inefficient or asking too much.

I remember when a ton of farmers got banned from WoW and prices shot up dramatically because the market efficiency was gone. Most crafters just aren't efficient enough at crafting because it's suppose to be a game not a job, and the people whose job it is are very efficient at it.. so I stopped hating farmers that day :)

Really? Did you read any of your posts from TWO YEARS AGO? Sounded like a lot of bitching to me.

Anyhow, MAP is Minimum ADVERTISED Pricing. It doesn't stop a reseller from selling something for a lower price. It just means they can't advertise it as such. Just look at all the stuff on Newegg, Amazon, and other retailers where you have to "Click for price".

I come from the musical instrument industry where I was a buyer. MAP is a program designed to protect the smaller retailers from getting run over by the big guys, like Guitar Center or Sam Ash versus your smaller mom and pop shops. It's the same thing with computer parts. Tiger Direct and Newegg can afford to sell product for a tad less just to get business, which kills business for your smaller computer shops who do much less volume. MAP keeps the playing field even (on the advertising front at least) so less business is driven away from the small guys.

The small guys keep the world turning. Protect them.

Seriously I just don't care. Many vendors do it, including many I like (Denon is another one). I can deal with it, and I'm not going to not buy a product just because I have to add something to a cart to see the price.
 
So apparently I posted in this thread two years ago, but I can't for the life of me remember what a UMAP is.

Since I had a 7800 GTX at the time, and have a GTX 280 now, I guess I didn't take his advice to heart. Though I did briefly own a pair of 4850s.
