I have a question that I KNOW is a FAQ, but I can't find the thread with the answer.

I'm running 51C/122F at load on an Athlon XP 2000+ but my system is a little loud so I'm trying to drop the fan speeds as much as possible. The question is how hot can I let the cpu run without risking it? I run the computer 24 hrs a day so stability and long life is important. Normally it's about 112-117F but whenever the room temp gets above about 80F the case and cpu temps climb. Case temp is 96F with a room temp of 83F.

The case is a lian li pc-60 usb using the fans that came with it (2 intakes running at low speed, one exhaust) and a dual fan (exhaust direction) psu. The cpu heatsink is an SLK-800 with some sort of speed controllable 80mm fan, currently running at it's top speed.

it won't damage until you hit 85-90C, the last thing i'd worry about is your CPU. if your case temps climb really high the first thing i'd worry about is hard drive lifespan.
 
The intake fans blow directly across the hard drives so I think I'm ok there... It's the only part of the system that I'm not really worried about. The only thing I should change there is to use rubber vibration isolators on the hard drive mounts but the drive cage is already pretty tight so I'd have to do some serious modding.
 
The answer to your question is that your cpu will probally fry at about 85-90C depending on the model. However, as the heat increases past a point the silicon will degrade and cause the life of the cpu to be reduced. I would say that anything over 65C load and you should be looking into better cooling. I would recommend any of the high end thermalright or the zalman, both can be run with quite low noise and still cool much better than the stock fan and allow temps to be much lower than 65C load

I am running a barton 2500+ mobile at 2600mhz with the zalman 7000 and my load temps are below 60C with a increase to 1.85Vcore which i am guessing is much over 90W of heat output. Thus I would look into buying a quality aftermarket heatsink and fan with a good intake and exhaust fan to help you out with low noise and cool processor.
