I'm looking for a new NAS.

* Turnkey operation. i.e. delivered ready to use as a NAS. I don't mind 'bare NASs', i.e. those that I add drives myself.
* Decent aftercare support (warranty extension plans / on-site service a plus)
* Low (but not necessarily silent) noise operation.
* 750Gb unformatted capacity in a RAID5 configuration of 4 drives.
* Hot swappable a plus. Swapping without disassembly a must.
* Audible HDD / unit failure notices a plus
* Gigabit, with ACTUAL GIGABIT-ISH TRANSFER RATES especially for small files.
* Compact size a plus

Any suggestions?

Here's hoping. The low-end standalone 'Gigabit' NASs struggle to push a Megabit-class link. Can't be too much to expect 40-50MByte/sec-ish throughput from a higher-end NAS, can it?

What's your budget? I don't think anything like this in the consumer class exists. The difficult points being support and speed. Buying a business-level NAS would get you both, but it'll be as expensive as a nice car.

I haven't found easy, cheap, and fast yet. But if I did, I'd spread the word.

Meaningfully less than an equivalent configuration for a base-model Poweredge basically.

I'm in the UK and my price for the Poweredge 840 with Pentium D, 3-year service, 1Gb of RAM, SATA RAID, 1Tb and Windows Server comes to around £1,500 + 17.5% sales tax - so like half that I suppose for the NAS listed in the first post (especially if it hasn't got more than a year's warranty).

The Thecus N5200 with 4 250Gb drives comes to £730 which is in the target ballpark.

Best I've been able to track down so far. What say the [H] masses?

Looking at the Thecus, looks like it will do what you want. But I wouldn't call 18MB/sec read speed for a 1GB file fast.

If you go DIY you can expect ~400-500MBps read and write speeds.

I'm half-tempted just to go with the Dell. It needn't just be a NAS in that case and the server's OK for noise. I'm not into troubleshooting and I hate (hate's a strong word... I'm just not into it much I guess) building PC's and stuff so I am definitely going with a prebuilt. Anyone else care to step up with alternatives?
