Well, phase 1 is complete...I got my qpack...phase 2 is now underway. I have ordered most of the parts and I am waiting for a few others to come out (mainly some swiftech watercooling stuff)

I got the msi board with msi x800xl
The RAM I wanted was not in stock, processor was not ordered either
I got a Viewsonic vp191b monitor.
Seagate 7200.8 250gb harddrive
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 zs i believe
Liteon Dual DVD burner. Should be a good set up :)

...but on topic, what type of ram were you looking at getting? i'm going to put together a qpack myself as soon as the new ati card comes out, and hopefully by then some more variety of good matx boards, too. i've never really thought too much about ram, though, i just always think pc3200, cheaper is better. does the ram quality only matter if you're going to oc? i.e., i'd be fine w/ some like corsair value ram or something like that vs their random double the cost stuff when i run at stock speeds?

I tried to get some measurements for you guys as well...this is seen in some of the pictures...the side where the PSU is closest is about 5" to the support..the other side is about 4" to the support..see pictures for a closer look...Another picture is from the PSU opening looking in

Finally, I cut myself once (picture soon :))

The PSU (picture soon) also has been improved from the orginal version. I still don't know if I trust it though.

The PSU has 30amp 12v rail instead of 20. other minor improvements as well...The PSU looks beautiful though.
 
It is beautiful, but I replaced it with a fortron anyway :O. It's lack of mass scared me.
 
well, compared to a full tower case, a qpack has a lack of mass, too. does that scare you? :p

ya i seriously hope the psu is better, give it a run through (or whatever u call it), and let me know if its good. i dont have any clue about specs for psu's, so just say like thumbs up / thumbs down :D
 
I noticed you're going with the Seagate drive. I also have a Seagate Barracuda 200 gig SATA with NCQ, and I love it, but I just got a Maxtor 250 gig SATA with 16 megs of cache and this baby flies. It beats the raptor in some tests.
 
yeah, the thing doesn't overclock but it is stable..or so I hear...so that is a main concern with me. I can live without overclocking for now. The real question is going to be whether I want a 4000+ or a 4400+. I am leaning to the 4000+ because I don't multitask and the 939 boards out are just "ok". In a year there will me new mATX boards with the new socket and maybe I will update it then...what you guys think?

4400+ = $600
4000+ = $380

As for Maxtor. I will never trust them again. They used to be a great company but then they decided to make half-ass products and their company has lost money every quarter for over a year. Seagate has the 5yr warranty and is a little more reliable than Maxtor. I don't trust Maxtor or Hitachi for Harddrives anymore...Seagate I admire the most and WD has gotten better in recent years. I am also surprised the Maxtor beats the Raptor...The Maxtor has a seek time of 9ms while the Seagate(for example) has 8. Not that this really means anything though :) The cache probably helps.
 
Don't get me wrong, I love my Seagate. The Maxtor Maxline III has a 5 year warranty as well. It's the same price as the Seagate, which was what sold me on it.

oh, I don't get you wrong...I was just explaing my reasoning for the seagate..

The Maxtor just makes me uneasy ;)
 
the 3800 seems like a rip off to me. I'm leaning towards the 4000+ unless the 4400+ drops to 550 or lower

Yeah I haven't heard the greatest things about their psu's ;) But I haven't heard anything bad about the qpack psu's. I want to go matx so bad but the lack of good matx boards is stopping me :eek:

Does it look like there would be enough room for a single 5.25" bay-res in the top drive bay? I emailed DangerDen for the exact dimensions, but haven't got a response yet. Looking at it, it looks close.
 
I measured..only if you use the stock PSU and not a full length...this is why I got the floppy drive bay one
 
got my qpack finished all I need is watercooling for it...I have all but the VGA cooler which wont be here until Monday at best :(

does anyone know of a good motherboard/computer monitor by the way?

something to monitor fan speed/cpu temp/voltages? from the desktop...i just never used them in the past but it seems people want that data now and it is easier than going to bios.


By the way, I carried my qpack by the handle yesterday and it works fine.
 
The computer is done..however, I am having a problem with the water cooling...the water is very foamy and I think it is making my temps highers than they should be....any ideas?
 
this isnt related to water cooling experiences, but doesnt foamy water = air in the water? if that's so, you should probably try letting it sit and have the air separate itself from the liquid and somehow get it out or something like that. i have no clue what im talking about here, though.

The next generation of gaming engines will supposedly take advantage of multi-core technology. While no one can yet determine what performance gains will be seen or if this statement is entirely true, it may be worth the current slightly slower performance of the faster single cores.

future game designs that use multicore would be AT BEST out during 2007..maybe. So by that time a 3800 dual core might not even cut it for that game. Not enough people will have dual core for it to be worth wild in the near future (1-2 years)
 
I buy a new computer every three years and I would guess that a dual core 3800+ will more likely than not out-perform a 4000+ if they optimize for it.

EDIT: Just giving an opinion here, but, to me, the dual core makes a lot more sense. You miss not having the second core when it is not there after having one, too.
