Steam Updated Deleted Games!

Be careful with the latest steam update. It deleted large number of my installed games without any warning. I ran my FlexRaid update and it took 3 hours instead of the usual 20 minutes, and when I looked, my steam list had 40 games that said "Update Required" when I checked the directories, no game files were in the directory. They all have to be redownloaded. One is Max Payne 3 which is like 27GB alone.

It's just a pain to do for me, but those of you with download limits might be in for a rude awakening if a bunch of your games that you are playing get deleted for no reason.

BTW, the steam queue/download manager sucks. It is limited to about 20-25, so I can't even just cue up everything and let it download.

Could you imagine all the drama if this were Origin? To be honest I've have had far more headaches with Steam over the past 4 years then origin

Steam could rape your grandmother and people would be fine with it. But if Origin so much as farts in your direction...oh shit it's game over, and the hell gates will open up. It's actually quite funny :D
 
This happened to me a few times in 2013. Not recently, though.

To be clear Steam didn't actually DELETE any of your games as in remove them from your library. Correct? I think what's happening is sometimes games get repackaged/optimized - its been covered in the past here but I'm too lazy to find the link. This can happen with a game here or there but if you're not exaggerating when you say "40 games say update required" then there may be some local issue with your harddisk.

Seems like there's more to the story or there's some confusion. I assume no FlexRAID restore operation was performed. Also not sure why you bother including Steam game folders in FlexRAID backups, unless you're on slow internet or have a data cap. The whole beauty of Steam is leveraging its digital locker ability.

I saw that a number of my games require reinstallation but is this perhaps an update to switch more products over to big picture mode or make them Linux compatible ... I can see how this might be inconvenient for folks with data caps but Steam does require all users to be on the same version of software so you may occasionally run into issues like this if they make a major change to games as they add new features to Steam
 
Mine just updated last night, but I didn't look for any missing games.... Geez I hope not. Not that I actually play most of them, but we did pay for them. Guess I'll find out once I get home this evening.

Mine are still in my steam account and the save games seem to be intact (if I had some) but the main programs require reinstallation (which means a download)

I had about a dozen titles affected (out of more than 300):

Skyrim
Galactic Civ I
Magica
Frozen Synapse
Several Valve titles (HL Ep 1 and 2, Portal 1)
a couple of Serious Sam titles
and a few more

Actually PC users have always been up for the "religious wars" from the earliest days of Apple vs PC and Intel vs AMD ... maybe for digital you could adapt the classic "how mobile users see each other" cartoon and make physical media for Blackberry, Steam for Apple, and Origin for Android :D

There were lots of different religions in the pantheon ... it was funny, I worked for Intel back in the days of the Pentium B-step flaw and that was when Intel first discovered the power and danger of the internet ... they started monitoring and publishing reports on the BBS discussions after that and the stats on the heated discussions between the various groups were actually published in a category entitled "religious wars" :D

No not removed from your library, just deleted the actual game files on the HD. This was not like the repackaged/optimized thing. I have had that happen several times before and Steam usually prompts that it has to do this before I can update, it never actually deleted stuff from the HD without asking first, and it only did that if I try to run the game in question. This one was the first time steam updated itself then (no exaggeration) almost all 40 game directories were empty though some had some files in them like my modified configs and some log files. This is most definitely not a hard drive or local issue I run and monitor all my HDs with HD Sentinel so other than a sudden failure, I will notice if a HD is about to fail.

FlexRAID was not restoring, it was only updating I do this manually every night. I include steam folders with the FlexRAID setup because it's a pseudo backup, it's good to have if steam updates a game and you don't like it or it's really buggy. If you notice before you update the RAID you can turn off auto update and restore the old game files. Steam's beauty as you put it is also one of it's weaknesses.
 
My Left 4 Dead 2 downloaded 15mb, everything else seems intact. Send in a support ticket.
 
Played some Torchlight 2 this morning, nothing out of the ordinary on my end
 
I'll need to check again once I get home from work. Last night (after signing into steam) I randomly checked my free space on my hard drive and it magically jumped from 135GB free to 191GB free.
 
Just logged into my steam account for the first time in 4 days. All i had is a 53MB update for Dota2 and a 14MB update for L4D2. Nothing was deleted.

When steam does the repack optimization it actually creates a GCF for the game in the common directory and puts the rest of the files in a game directory inside of the common directory.

If you didn't bash your friends for having Atari 65XE with tape recorder without turbo system, while you were sporting C64 with floppy, you didn't take part in computer religious wars :)

If this were Origin, you would see people who have never even touched Origin saying "Oh yeah I knew this would happen because Origin is poo". I'm getting tired of these double standards.

I guess you haven't read this section the past year or two then. I bring it up because everyone always pulls this shit in Origin threads. I just want to see the reaction here, and it isn't different from what I thought. All hail Steam it is.

Some people saying they were affected, some people saying they weren't... not exactly a circlejerk. Now, if people were telling the OP he was wrong or lying, then I'd be on board with what you're saying.
 
I wasn't affected. To deflect the "circlejerk" bs you're trying to stew:
Steam is slow as fuck and their internal browser is awful. Their TF2 MvM servers (which I've only just started playing time to time) are absolute trash, constantly rubberbanding/lagging despite everyone on the server sitting at sub-100ms. CS:Go servers are slightly better but can have the same issue. The market, items servers, etc are constantly going down for 5min-2hours at least 4 times a week.

All that being said, still the best platform.

Although some discussions go that way, this one certainly hasn't ... Origin probably inherits some bad blood because of it being done by EA ... personally I don't hate EA and buy games from them (when they sell something I want to have) ... same for Ubisoft and Activision also ... I'm not heavily invested in Origin yet since I don't have much software with them ... but if they can get more exclusives that I want I have no problem using them in addition to my other two primary digital platforms (Steam and GOG) ... since I have no data caps, on this particular Steam issue it doesn't matter to me (I wasn't playing the games they are forcing me to reinstall so there is no impact there either) ... judging from some of the comments I saw on the Steam forums about this there are definitely some ticked off people (especially due to the impact to their data caps or games they were actively using) :cool:

Oh, and to also validate this is not all pro-Steam they did appear to be deleting comments about this on their own forums ... not the most open approach to this
 
The main reason I've been pissed with Steam is their support sucks, it's starting to become really bloated(Really noticeable on older PC's) and they don't allow for refunds. And it's just really annoying seeing people praise it as the best thing since sliced bread with such easy to fix issues that they never fix.

As the old saying goes, "In the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king" ... companies ignored the digital market for too long and allowed Steam to establish a robust presence there ... although not perfect they do tend to be ahead of their competitors still (who still seem to be playing catch up) ... Alternately, the same could be said for iTunes ... as painful as it sometimes was to use (especially for Windows PCs) it was still often better than its competitors

If you borrow a page from the classic Sun Tzu's Art of War ("The Attacker must Vanquish while the Defender need only survive") you can see why establishing an internet presence first can be so critical ... even if you are not the best, it can be harder for the new players to displace you than it is for you to hang on ... I hope all the various digital stores continue to develop so that we can get better digital offerings moving forward (from all the players) ... at least all the current players seem to be serious about the digital market (not like the poor departed Windows Marketplace) :cool:

Thats because origin is poo. It crashes alot and there is ALWAYS and update. It crashes mid game and crashes the game. If i try to move my origin games and installation over to another drive you can forget about it. You have to redownload everything all over again.

Both services have their problems and you can bet origin has more problems. This is because Steam has many many years over origin to mature and streamline. Its the way it is. No biased about it.

Sounds like something on your end. Steam has had about an equal amount of issues for me since I started using Origin when I downloaded the BF3 alpha. I have more game time in Origin the past two years than Steam, though only with a few titles.

Origin never crashed for me. Updates are extremely rare compared to Steam. Probably once a quarter. It does not crash my games that crash on their own (BF4 and ME3). I moved my BF4 installation to a new drive just fine; though the first DLC had issues. I had to delete that and reinstall the single DLC. Though I would think that is more of a BF4 issue and not an Origin one. For the Steam titles I moved, I still had to redownload a small amount of things, re-verify, ect. Both programs can use a more automated process in this instance.

Origin is less feature rich, but is rather stable. And I actually like the more simplified approach in many cases. And the download speed is considerably better than what Steam offers.

Overall, if given the choice between Steam and Origin I would go with Steam. I like it better. But Origin is very stable for me and just about everyone I know who uses it.

The crashes, never experienced them but I don't doubt you so I'm not sure what caused them. As for moving games, Origin had the ability to easily move games way before Steam did. AFAIK Steam added it after the fact that Origin had it. It took me 5 minutes of Google to figure it out 2 years ago(I used a symbolic link then, but there are easier methods now)

That's debatable. It lacks some features but that doesn't mean it's crap. Steam was a steaming pile of shit when it came out and everyone hated it. I should now, I was there. Now everyone loves and praises it.

Origin doesn't "crash a lot". Origin never crashed for me and I've been using it since it was called EADM and was just a download manager. If it's crashing a lot then it's a problem on your end. Probably some piece of software conflicting with it, like this guy.

Are you talking about having games on different HDD/partitions or just moving your games from one place to another? If the former, it's not possible right now. If it's the latter, then you probably didn't update the game installation location in the applications settings. I've done it and it works fine.

I suspect people's preference for one digital platform over another is also dependent on the types (and numbers) of games they play:

1. I hate DRM and I want to control or resell my product (Welcome to physical media ... just ride your dinosaur to the store to buy your discs :p ) - I buy 1-2 games a year in this camp
2. I hate DRM but I want the convenience of digital (Welcome to GOG) - I have about 85 games in this camp
3. I hate DRM and I am really fond of Indie Developers (Welcome to the Humble Bundle) - I have no presence in this camp
4. I don't mind DRM and I play lots of different game types and I like sales (Welcome to Steam) - 340 games in this camp
5. I don't mind DRM and I play mostly sports, action, shooters, particularly those from EA (Welcome to Origin) - I have about 5 here but my kids are closer to 12 here
6. I don't mind DRM and I play mostly action and shooters, particularly from Ubisoft (Welcome UPlay) - I have 3 here (Assassin's Creed, Far Cry 3, Might and Magic Heroes VI)
7 I don't mind DRM and I play Starcraft, Warcraft, or Diablo (welcome to BNet) - I have most of the Blizzard stuff

If you are a serious gamer you will have a foot in all camps :D
