What are you using the trackpads for? I look at the thing and I can't fathom a use.

If you’re using the controller on a TV setup, they are essential (assuming you don’t have a keyboard and mouse hooked up). Even games with proper controller support often have launchers that require a mouse to navigate.

Plus as others have said, you can remap them to anything you want via steam input

You can use either I'm pretty sure Wallet CC or PayPal. I been using my PayPal rewards on my Steam account to save for these totally out of control digital prices.

These are good as it gets the Buttons are mapped A,B,X,Y instead of PS5 buttons which for some games they don't have PS5 buttons mapped. I'm pretty sure you can use Xbox 360 controllers from two decades ago so these should be good for along time. They have USB C connectors you can use almost any phone cable if it goes bad or use wireless if you want.

My dusty controllers usually use the top one less dust =) plus you can change out Analog sticks they are magnetic

You can use them for games that support a mouse cursor at the same time which can make things like inventory management and menu usage easier (highly game dependent). You can also set them up as custom hotkeys; e.g. assign them for direct access to weapon/items. There are other uses as well but these are as far down the rabbit hole that I've gone.

I was playing Civ V last night, much better experience than just using an Xbox controller (which is technically fine).

Interesting. Maybe I'll have to look at it in the future. That's my only issue right now with my TV setup right now is having a mouse on the end table next to the couch for launching games, YouTube, Netflix, etc.

If you have a ps4 or ps5 controller, you can get the exact same functionality so don’t really need the steam controller for that, but the extra 4 back buttons (plus the dedicated steam and quick access buttons) make it worth having IMO

I'm running xbox controllers right now. I have the old Steam controller from way back but could never get used to it.

AFAIK the 'advanced' features on the PS controllers don't work unless they're plugged in. Maybe the touchpad is different though, I haven't tried it wirelessly in a while.

You know - I've been using a Dual Sense for my SteamOS desktop build and had no idea you could use Steam's 'radial' functionality for the controller. Very cool, I'll have to check it out on my days off.

Yeah that's true, the DualSense controller's Adaptive Triggers and the haptic feedback rumble don't work on PC unless you are using a wired connection.

Maybe the touchpad is different though, I haven't tried it wirelessly in a while.

All you need for that is DS4Windows. Then you can use the touchpad on a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller to control the mouse cursor on your Windows desktop.

They make navigating Steam, web browsers/streaming apps, and many games, (especially older games), UI's far easier. While I still primarily aim with the right stick I often switch to the pad for finer control. I never thought I would use it either until I had it available. I will never buy a hand held that does not have at least one track pad. Preferably on the right side. It can be one of the tiny ones, but it has to have one, or I need an extra Steam controller to use with it.

I think that applies to the triggers on the ps5 controller but AFAIK the rest of the functionality works ootb wirelessly via steam

As I mentioned above, the Adaptive Triggers and the haptic feedback rumble are the only things that require a wired connection. Oh and I think DualSense speaker usage too.
