Steam Controller Demonstration

from a pure comfort point of view, running your thumb over those bumps for a few hours seem terrible.

If people always thought like that, modern music would never have came about. Guitar strings aren't exactly comfortable on the fingertips.

Ok, lets discuss this further so now why don't you flip that around and also tell us why it might work for you?
For me personally? I honestly don't see a big benefit for me personally at all, I don't play RTS games and I rarely play single player FPS games where high accuracy is needed, those are the only times I really see this being a benefit.

I think my biggest skeptical point on this is that it looks like it would be painful after any period of time, the same way gaming on a phone will give you sore thumbs after a while (both in terms of cramping and the fact you are wiping your finger over a touch pad constantly). I'm also yet to meet a touchpad that is consistent with varying finger moisture.

Huh? That's a terrible comparison. For one, people DO use picks, lol. For two, who WANTS to get blisters and cramps playing a video game, especially when there's alternative input forms anyway?

I can't see this thing winning any quake tournaments, but who knows cause alot of console guys are really good with a controller...but it will blur the lines, bridge the gap so to speak, between pc and console. Thats Valves mission.

Meh.

Looks like you have to lift your thumb too many time to get it to track across the screen and I still think the precision isn't going to be great.

Yep terrible on thumbs, all that lifting and swiper no swiping

Most pro FPS gamers lift their mice all the time so I don't see it being any different. That's why some laser mice are engineered with very minimal lift-off distance in mind.

Yes i understand taht, Though a mouse and mousepad offers almost unlimited room of movement. I beleive it was Fata1l1ty that played witha huge mouse pad, and took like 12 inches of movement ot do a 360 in quake 3. T

I'm not even going to replace my xbox 360 controller with this...atleast the thumbsticks provided an infinite amount of movement by simply leaning it in one direction, this doesn't even appear to be able to do that.

i beleive the video said it was a 1 to 1 ratio and the games not even setup for the controller. Im sure due to infinite ways to modify computers, it will be able to .

There is a void that needs to be filled for the steam box to be successful in a living room environment so of course It's a compromise, this controller is intended to be used with games that do not have controller support by emulating keyboard and mouse input and bring those games to the couch easier. If every game already supported the xbox controller perfectly there would be no reason for this to exist however that isn't the case. Comparing it to either a xbox controller or mouse/keyboard directly seems ignorant to say the least once you use just a tiny bit of thought on what they are trying to accomplish here. It's obviously not going to compete with controllers that already exist and are already supported because guess what? You can continue to use those.

Wrong. It will be configurable to endless movement by moving further away from middle of pad just like a thumbstick. Sorry to burst your bubble, kiddo -- no need to feel threatened.

I disagree, expecting it NOT to be compared to kb/m and controller is ignorant as it's inevitably going to happen and even if it's trying to carve out it's own niche, it will be competing with existing controllers.

I guess I don't see this "void" as much as other people seem to see it. There are games that don't play well from the couch, but once you say "well it's not meant to be used competitively", the number of games you might use it that you can't already use a 360 controller with drops significantly.

Then you have the fact that playing an FPS from the couch, IMO, is never going to be as good as playing in front of a PC regardless of the input method. Unless you sit really close to the screen, you end up using a low FOV and can't see things as well. That's half the reason PC gamers have to contend with pathetic FOV's these days, they're set up for couch-gaming.

I'm happy enough to see a new input method, I guess I just don't see why people are getting all excited about this and I don't really see it doing all that much positive for PC gaming (granted, I don't really see it doing anything negative either :p).

If you lift your thumb more, the less time to aim/control, and he looked like he lifted it quite often. Tahts wahat i was implying. This controller does look to be an improvement over xbox/psx/nin controllers.. I wouldnt mind to test one out .

What would be a good analogy here....hmmm....well we've all seen how the Wii U controller worked out. :p
