Steam...Cant connect???

I obviously have internet connection, but Im not able to connect to Steam to play some TF2.

I went online to www.steampowered.com and put in my name and password...I can see others are connected and playing....

Game was working yesterday. I get home from work early and want to play but cant connect.

Anyone else having trouble?

Anyone got a clue as to what I can do about the situation?
 
It's been flaky lately. I got that once and closed it out and reloaded it up and it connected. Sometimes when I get into the game I can't change my players' weapons setup because it couldn't connect to Steam.
 
Yeah. Its closed out already on my computer. Its just not letting me connect for some reason. Ive scanned thru the Steam site searching for any recent info on said situation, but found nothing, so thought Id come to the [H] to see if any other fellow TF2 players are having difficulty as well.

I had to restart my computer earlier due to some MS updates to take affect. When I shut down the computer, it shuts down the connection to Steam too. When the computer reboots, I have to manually double click on my shortcut icon on the desktop to launch Steam and then to launch TF2. But now I cant connect. Wheres the tissues, Im going to go cry :(
 
If restarting Steam does not resolve the issue, please exit Steam and delete the following files from your Steam directory:

Steam.dll
SteamUI.dll
ClientRegistry.Blob

By default, the files may be found at C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\ or C:\Program Files\Steam\ (the location on your machine will vary if you specified a different installation folder, or if you have moved your Steam installation).

So, why would it work for some, not for others? I never understood this....

Sometimes on of those files get corrupt. Steam will recreate them when you launch it. Perfectly safe. I had to do it recently myself.

Was just looking at that myself. I never played the first one.

Ehhh, I dunno, it didnt strike an interest with me, but sometimes thats a flaw I have with games. Im kinda like a "judge the book by its cover" type of guy, but with games. I look at the screens and if I dont get that "spark" from what I see, I tend to not get it.

Why are you getting the game? Maybe someone who has played it can give me a better, indepth feeling for the game???
 
I've tried out the beta when they first opened up to the public, it was pretty fun. But wasn't sure if it was worth the 30 at the time. But now at 9.99 I couldn't refuse, the game is unique thats for sure and it's hella fun for what it's worth.
 
Had this problem yesterday. Spent a few hours trying to resolve it, but the fix for me was going to steampowered.com, downloading the install for steam, and just selecting repair when prompted to continue.

Stupid steam.

I feel your pain buddy. Although I could have done what this individual had mentioned, when he posted it, I still spent a few hours researching it before I just did it. Because of the problem, I missed out on several hours of gameplay. To some, that isnt much at all, to me, its very frustrating cause I only have "a few hours" to play per week.

But, all in all, I wouldnt say Steam was stupid really. Its a first to happen for me since the release of Red Orchestra <---about when I signed up for Steam. So, one little mishap in several years of usage isnt too bad at all, ehh?

Another good thing is that we both were able to isolate and repair the problem and were up and gaming shortly after....thats a good thing, right?

Yeah, I suppose. Still, should needing to update steam really be identified with "unable to connect messages" and a useless troubleshooting page that doesn't solve the problem?

It's a frustration yes, and of course I'll continue to use steam. I think the bigger issue here is the people who are technologically clueless, and won't be able to fix this problem on their own in a small amount of time. How much of their time will be wasted doing what should have been an automated steam process? Especially with the online help pointing them in the wrong direction (at least in this case). I don't care to imagine how many hours they'll spend trying to get that working. :(

Ahh Steam... we have a love/hate relationship don't we?

Yeap, I agree. If I didnt have [H] to fall back on for info, I would be lost completely. No way would I have thought to do what needed to be done...."Delete game files....are you nuts" would have been my thoughts...

So, yeah, I agree with ya, it should have been something that could be fixed automatically.....or at very least, have proper instructions given at the help links. From my point of view, the way the error screen was worded, was like they were saying something is wrong with MY connection and I should be calling my ISP.....which in turn, had NOTHING to do with said problem.

I had this problem yesterday on my laptop. I thought it was my Comodo firewall so I uninstalled it and nothing. I then uninstalled steam and reinstalled and now all is well. First time that has happened to me.

Thanks man, fixed it for me too.

I just assumed my steam install had failed in some way. There appears to be nothing mentioning this at steampowered.com
 
In Vista 64 going to Start/Control Panel/Programs and Features,
a repair option is given for Steam. It does the same as deleting/moving those 3 files.
 
Well, cool deal.....

I was hesitant to make this thread since it wasnt actually discussing a game per se, but a problem within one.

Im glad to see the thread became of some use to others.
