Steam = ? as usual...

And what does that have to do with the "demo" concept ?
I was just commenting on the "because they can" part. :p
Because that's precisely what's being complained about.
How easy do you think it would be for people to use the demo to run custom maps?
Since you love it so much, I'm guessing you are ok with every company adopting the retarded Valve demo concept ? Meaning that you'll need to be available to try these "demos", when these companies want it and not when you can...
I'm sorry, what do I love so much?

No, but they're not responsible for the complaints associated with it. Valve's offering refunds because Rockstar produced a poor product and customers are unhappy with it, not because Valve or Steam are responsible for those specific issues customers are encountering with GTA4. That's very atypical behavior in this industry and shows that Valve has at least some concern for customer satisfaction (unlike, say, Rockstar).

Come on phide. You're smarter than that...
You know perfectly well that behind the scenes, Valve is making sure that Rockstar is paying the expenses they're having with these refunds. But that's also precisely how it should work. Because if a product bought through their service doesn't work, it's their responsibility, to take care of their customers. Everything else, is between them and the product owner, in this case Rockstar.

phide said:
A demo is, literally, a "demonstration". Whether or not it's time-limited doesn't really change that.

You know what I meant. Don't go around the bush, with semantics. A demo is something that we can use to try out a certain game and/or software and is not available only during a period of time, but rather available at all times, so that a potential customer that is aware of the product at a later time, can in fact try it out when he/she can. It doesn't make any sense to lock it to any time period. Sometimes the portion that requires online play may be disabled from the demo, because supporting servers is expensive, but the single player part should always be active and ready to be tried out.

In the end, it doesn't matter what you, I or anyone else thinks while debating it here. The bottom of the line is that some people will just avoid buying the game, given that they can't try it out, even though there's a "demo" available.

I was just commenting on the "because they can" part. :p

It's basically what's written in the terms of service. They can terminate it, when they see fit, simply because they own your account, not you. Whether it's happen or not is another matter. It's just simply what you agree with, once you create an account or buy a game through Steam, so you're subjected to it.

As easy as it is for any other real game demo out there.

...
Valve's "demo" concept obviously...

The only bad thing about this idea is that I downloaded and played it for a few minutes, but had to do other things. After I had time to play again a week later, it was locked. So that was kind of lame. Havent had the chance to re-download, keeping me from getting the real thing.

That's on paper, but not necessarily what goes on in practice. By the way, Valve isn't the only company that has that type of stance.

Maybe that's part of Valve's rationale; it may hurt sales.

Valve's "demo" concept obviously...
How did you come to that conclusion?

You're as moronic as he is.

Why because I don't support some one complaining for no real reason? How dumb of me.

How many threads full of crap like this are floating around? Do we really need another one?

This thread reminds me why I lurk instead of troll.

Quite simply, if you don't like Valve's methods, vote with your dollar. We don't care to see your rant thread, so take it to GenMay.

The comment from will wright, was not a good one. Basically he was saying he would want sales rather than make a decent game, wow, what a strategy.

His post: "QQ". Moronic.

Your post: "QFT". Quoting what for truth? Some juvenile expression meant to imply "cry more" and represent some eyes crying? Moronic.

The fact that you needed it explained maked me feel vindicated.

Fixed. Your welcome. I know what QQ means.

Now then, the fact that you took the time out to call two different people morons via saying "such and such post is moronic ... blah blah blah" implying that said posters were acting like morons when making the post; then quoting them to cry about how "moronic" you think they are? ... QQ

I thought the same thing.

Ah, so then you must think the use of :) is moronic as well? Or any other emoticon?
Get over it man, dont be such a tool.

Using QQ is just a good as telling the person to stop crying or any other semi-offensive statement. Don't see how that's a measure of intelligence. Just shows your arrogant ignorance by saying so. So stop QQing about QQ. :p

I was in a pissy mood when I started this thread,
seems like it stayed on that groove...

I still say Valves DRM / business model is flawed.

example, I look in my Games list, and it says not installed
but I look in my Steam folder and theres 5 gigs of games that valve say is not installed.
So I have 0 access to these games, but they are taking up 5 gigs?
once again I say WTF?

Fixed. You're welcome. I know what QQ means.

I can play this game too. It's good fun, this.

That was shoehorned in, there, chum. More than a little contrived.

Did you delete the game content when you uninstalled them, etc.? Which games?

Actually, I was poking fun at the mistake you made.:p (Oops I forgot that using smiles, symbols, or expressions related to emotion is considered moronic now ... on a public forum).

Let's see... how stupid is Valve (in reguards to Steam, we won't even touch on the quality of their game titles here).

1. They've got the number one digital content distribution platform for PC.
2. They continually set sales records for software titles offered on the service.
3. They are making money hand over fist even now when other companies are spiraling thanks to the ease of use and availability of the service.

Yup. Looks like they are really stupid to me, I expect them to file for bankruptcy any time now. I mean, when you continually make stupid mistakes like this how can your company possibly survive?

Seriously, the OP is complaining about the L4D pre-release demo being locked. It was made ABUNDANTLY clear on Steam that the demo had limited time functionality and would not be available after the release of the full game. No one twisted his arm and made him download it, and his procrastination is the only thing to blame for his panties being in a bunch.

Whine whine bitch piss and moan...

Eh I like Steam, I don't plan on selling my account and don't plan on getting banned...

I probably got a few hundred in games purchased on there (OrangeBox + ID Pack + Rockstar Pack + L4D + other random games like CS:S, and DOD:S ) D= but I paid full retail for all my different games over time. Like $50 for HL2, $50 for Orangebox, $50 for L4D, and now it's all in one pack for $100 heh...

And this is why I originally said QQ.

You cry because you can't play a demo that had limited availability from the start.
I mean shit, you go into steam and is says 3days left, showing you how long the demo was still available. Right in the L4D page on steam it showed how long the demo was set to be available.

If you want to play it so badly then buy the game.

The creation of this thread to cry was moronic. Now I hope this gets locked...

Everyone here is just "offended" about the way you said this. You should have worded it the way Blue Falcon did.

I could say "Could you please make sure you don't do that again because we already know" OR "Shut the eff up, you keep bitching about the same damn thing."

Geez, I've got to say that society is too lenient on stupid people. This is why there are stickers on coffee cups saying "CAREFUL CONTENTS ARE HOT!"

Now we have to change the top of the L4D page to include:
DEMO IS TIME LIMITED. THAT MEANS GAME WILL NOT BE PLAYABLE AFTER A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME

If you're hesitant about buying and can't get the demo, I suppose you could try to find a friend with the game.

This is getting beyond ridiculous. The OP must be missing some brain cells, i am being serious, he must have a mental deficiency, perhaps we should show a bit of pity here, he has special needs.

I will try and explain, your steam games folder shows the games that are in your account, if you have not installed them yet or have loaded steam onto a new computer it will display all the games you have not activated as being not installed, simply right click them and choose to install them and valve will download any necessary files(not sure if it re-downloads the whole game or not) and you will be able to play them.

Actually, I was poking fun at the mistake you made.:p (Oops I forgot that using smiles, symbols, or expressions related to emotion is considered moronic now ... on a public forum).

I'm sure.

Smileys aren't really entirely moronic, but the "QQ" is, for these reasons: It's perpetuated by 4chan/ebaumsworld-frequenting sub-mentals and children, didn't contribute anything to the thread and was just outright thread crapping in the very first response, and lastly doesn't actually look like what it's supposed to represent (teary eyes).

You're allowed to use those lovely little 'toons on the right, though. Knock yourself out.

If you want to play it so badly then buy the game.

The creation of this thread to cry was moronic. Now I hope this gets locked...

I honestly think the backwardness of this/these comments is escaping you.

And your whining about QQ contributes something? No, you should have PMed the person about your distaste for the emoticon, if we're going by your standards.

I'm not sure how saying "idiot" constitues whining, but whatever, you're just trying to have a dig. Anyway, no, it doesn't, but posts 28, 30, and 34 do.

Cheers for trying, though.

So your admitting only 3 of your 10 posts in this thread have contributed to the topic?

Cheers on the majority of your posts being useless, though.

And yes, insulting peoples intelligence, in any form during an argument or discussion, should be considered whining or at least lack of any social finesse.
It's generally the lowest form of retort. Cheers on lowering yourself to your perceived level of etiquette as the person who said QQ is the first place.

My admitting that, absolutely. My also admitting that the reason only three have contributed is because the majority are dealing with mental sub-normals.

I think you need to reconsider your definition of "whining", really. You can't just arbitrarily come up with defnitions and act as though that suddenly is the commonly-accepted understanding of a word. I'm sorry, it just doesn't work like that.

OK smartasses (you know who you are)...

I'm not debating valves business $uccess, that's a given.
McDonald's makes $ and so do hookers, so what.

The one thing I am saying = the idea of a time limited/locked demo, any demo, is just stupid:p

Think of the UT2004 demo, to this day people still play/enjoy it, it fits on a CD, and guess what, they sold a shizload of that full game, and didn't have to time limit the demo to do it. It stands on the power of it's play value.

I have an archive, a collection if you will, of a bunch of cool demos from the last several years, hard backups.
but can I add LFD to it? oh no, it's just some cheezy marketing tool, not a peice of software to be used or enjoyed.
valve/steam = $

You guys defending steam are either too young or too ignortant to understand what "real" software is, it's not some fleeting daliance that holds your short attention for a few weeks or months,
if it's good, really good it can be like a classic book or a movie, it's worth owning a real copy of.

in this case LFD proves my point, it's not that good at all, in a year or so it will fade away, while games like Q4/UT/ or the equivelant will still be played.

Or, ya know, we just appreciate a good delivery system.

A few weeks or months? So no one plays Counter-Strike anymore? Or any other VALVe game? Or Garry's Mod? etc, etc, etc. Boy, Steam Stats must just be an outright lair then...

No, you simply don't appreciate the platform, which in your case is understandable and your allowed that opinion. But do not go assuming others only like something because they are "too young or too ignorant". The only thing I gather from your post is "I'm an experienced/older gamer with my own tastes and from that I'm holing my own opinion to have higher value than others."
Bullshit. I bet your the kind of person who refuses to spell Microsoft any other way than "M$", too.

Digital delivery is the future, quickly becoming the present, popular delivery method for all types of media. Welcome to modern times.

No, Steam isn't a perfect platform. No, VALVe isn't a perfect company. But I'll be damned if they haven't breathed life into a platform of fading popularity (non casual PC games).

That's it T-man, your too jaded and can't accept other new ideas.

yawn yawn yawn....

You have to stay with the traditional. While it is good, some new things are better. The way you bash Valve and they're Steam delivery system just because of ONE demo is freaken ridiculous.

And "oh my gosh I save demos so I can replay them, now I can't anymore because Left4Dead is time locked." Really?? This is a DEMO, it's meant to demonstrate part of a full product. Yes the Unreal Demo can be played forever, but most people play the demo, think "THIS IS AWESOME", and buy the FULL GAME. Very nice job supporting your favorite games by coming together with friends to play a DEMO over and over.

And what's with all this Valve/steam = $ucce$$ bull-S. So all successful people are evil? They worked all the way to the top just so they can make a demo last 2 min to torture you, is that it? What the hell kind of logic forms these statements.

ZOMG! Valve wants to make money? Demos are a marketing tool, not software to be enjoyed for eternity?

In other breaking news, the economy is bad, Illinois' governor is a crook, and Elton John is gay.

you sound like a valve marketing rep,
"the future..."
lol

yawn...

I hope you realize I was talking about digital distribution of all kinds, not just Steam. Direct2Drive, GoodOldGames, and many more coming out of the wood work.

But I see your too dug into your elitism to really see anything other than your own viewpoint.

yawn...

You can still play it if you click the l4d.exe (make sure STEAM is running).

A solution was made for him in post #7 and yet hes still whining??..

The T-man
I can promise you this, this type of $#$& pretty much guarantees I will NOT be purchasing the game, thank you very much.
they have proved once again (see thread below) why steam sucks AFAIK

So you pretty much are ranting and dont even believe your own nonsense..
