Starcraft II

Has everyone done their placement matches yet? Made back into to diamond, thought I was going to be platinum... hjaven't laddered in months.

^Only played one 4v4 game, and got placed into Gold. Truth be told, that's all I ever play. I think I've played one ladder 1v1 game, but no more than that.

I'm actually really looking forward to this season, I should have some time to play! I really didn't want to ladder last season because I was so far behind and I just had absolutely no time what so ever. I'd really like to get masters, but that might be a little more of an investment than I'm willing to give.

I'm not that serious about it as you are, it seems. I have only about 200 ladder games under my belt, with 50/50 win/lose ratio. The highest I've ever been placed was the Plat league in 4v4, and that's pretty much my only goal for this season, assuming I'll be playing this game more than once a week.

Likewise. I'm content with being in diamond.. until masters becomes like Diamond is now when grand masters is out lol. Masters league is too much of time commitment. I havent played for a damn long time.. probably wont play anytime soon too.

Was pushed back into diamond after placement.

I think it uses your games from last season to place...

My placement was weird. Came from platinum, hardly played 1v1 and probably lost the last 4 out of 5 games. I was only in platinum coz of the placement. I was at 7/6, just waiting to get demoted as I think I belong to silver at best.

New season, excited to get demoted so I can stop being owned. I lost my placement match against a plat and suddenly i'm diamond. eh??

Same here, back to diamond I went. Except for 1v1. I played a couple placement matches against ridiculous players who were ranked top 10 diamond already. I haven't played any ladder matches since november of last year, but I have to say in 1v1 it looks like people have really got their shit together.

I did 2v2 placement matches with a friend. We're both bronze level. The matches Blizzard arranged were 4 games against Diamond players and one against Master Leaguers. It is any surprise we ended up back in bronze?

There's a lot of people on various forums that were gold or platinum in season one that did their one placement match and ended up in Diamond. I'm not sure obviously, but I think it's just going to take some time for the leagues to settle a bit.

From what I can tell the ladder reset is basically just meant to boot all the inactive players out of the leagues. You have to assume that with each season you'll have fewer and fewer casual players, so the difficulty level across all leagues will increase.

The games and ratings were reset, but your MMR was not reset.

It uses your existing MMR to place you against the existing active player pool.

I have a friend who had a bronze account and was promoted straight to gold as well...iirc bnet occasionally checks for where you should be moved, maybe this first placement match did that for everyone and their mmrs were already leaning towards promotions?

I occasionally play 4v4 random when I can't get a custom and I got promoted straight to gold from silver after winning the first placement as well. I had a ~65% win rate in silver in s1 so I'm guessing during s1 bnet just never got around to checking if silver was the right league for me as well

Still need to do my new placement match. I was Silver before, but I wonder where I will be placed. I had a 50% win ratio so we shall see.

The MLG Starcraft 2 Tournament Stream goes live in a bit under 10 minutes. An hour late, but then it wouldn't exactly be MLG without some kind of ridiculous delay on their opening night.

I did the 5 placement matches about 3 months ago, and found myself in silver. 1v1 makes me nervous, not sure why since it is just a game? But today I just did the 1 needed placement match and now I find myself in the top 25 Gold. Typically I only play custom games against the AI...I must be getting better heh.

^Quit your bitching, you're still awesome!

Meanwhile, I'm being teamed up with Gold-Bronze players vs. Master-Plat and they call that shit "even".

I feel like no matter how excellent a Protoss player I was, it is virtually impossible to stop an early bio-ball all where all the terran's money went into units and no medivacs. You absolutely cannot expand even to your natural and hope to keep it. I could 2 gateway proxy or try a 3-stalker rush, but that feels like my only option as PvT....

You gave me a great idea to troll RT since they don't count losses now.

EDIT: What the hell? They added masters league to teams now?

^Nice. You still get negative points for losing the game, right?

Yes.

The way I see it though, it doesn't matter how you play, in the long run you theoretically go 50/50.

For example if I played with one hand behind my back and could only use a touchpad, I'd still have more or less the same ratio as if I played seriously. The only difference is that my opponents would be much worse in the former scenario.

Points would of course always go up with time since the system is not zero sum. The only people this can't apply to are the very top and the very bottom (note how in the patch notes blizzard said that the very bottom of bronze losing too many points for a loss was a 'bug' - where in actuality their true rating was negative. Suave move Blizzard, calling it a bug instead of telling people they are actually that horrible).

This way I can dick around and do whatever I want now... Of course I could have done that pre patch but part of me cared about my overall record (yes it sounds shallow). That was the biggest thing turning me off of RT since it did match against AT after all.

But... I just checked and teams have masters now? This changes the game... I don't want to hit masters yet I do want to. Oh woe is me.

Had to switch to Terran for a bit. Haven't played in a few months and it's hard to get back into the mechanics when you are getting smoked. A week straight of losing with zerg, to 3-4 days of winning as Terran(Just been doing 1-1-1 opening). About another week and I can switch back.

horsemama1956 if anyone wants to play someone who's APM is at 50 and not all that great anymore(was 120+).

Only thing I hate about this game is when you get into it you don't/can't play other games.

always been a masters league for team games

Not when masters was first introduced. There was noticeable complaining on the forums about no masters for team leagues. I guess blizzard gave in. I honestly haven't laddered since the patch they first introduced masters so I don't know when masters was implemented for teams.

Masters for "team" teams or for random teams?

That's strange because I feel like no matter how excellent a Terran player I am, a 3 or 4 gate will destroy me most of the time.

weird, it definitely was there before this latest patch though.

Is it me, or Zerg is now the most popular race in SC2? Of the ~10 4v4's that I've played since the reset, Zerg has been by far the most popular race. WTF? Before it was normal for me to be the only Zerg in the game, and now? I play with 4-5 Zerg players almost every game.

Apparently random is for 4v4 :p

I know of a few people that are doing two zergs that ten pool all in, and two terrans that 3 rax all in that are 43-1 in 4v4 masters. Most people are choosing zerg because when they combine their cheese it becomes an amalgamation producing that sharpest of cheddars that cannot be ignored. :D :D :D

Yeah, this is why I gave up on 3v3 and 4v4. Whoever cheeses best wins.
