Haven't played much the past week but hopped on for a few games last night, as Terran I typically stick with the noob-friendly MMM ball but instead focused on mech this time and had decent success. I do miss the ol' SC1 Siege Tanks but they still do their job in SC2. Thors I just don't get...when compare 'em to, say, the Colossus I just don't think they're "quite" as powerful (well, better against armor, not as good against mass light units). Still, heavy hitting.
Depends on the situation. Facing mutas for example I'd take 1 thor over 10 colossi any day of the week.
Understood, I just don't know how to use 'em yet.
in mid-late game you need a lot of them with upgrades and then they're just unreal
you see a lot of people in mid-late game with only like 3 thors and 0 upgrades and then they expect it to be successful

Thors are meant for heavy duty ground support. Front of tanks, behind marines/marauders, against units with high armor (like ultras or immortals). 250cm cannon upgrade works very well on immortals -- 1 hit kill.
They also work well for mutas or void rays -- most people don't know how to spread void rays or mutas when attacking thors, so the splash damage helps.

I'm going to argue (in the world of razer products) the blackwidow KB is a better buy for starcraft 2 vs the razer marauder, even though it's a cherry MX blue switch type, which some nonKB fourms (OCN) like to solidly label as "anti gaming" lol.

I don't know why you would want a rubber membrane/dome keyboard for a pro gaming SC2 keyboard. If you watch GSL, most of the pros will have their own keyboards and they are Korean/Taiwanese mechanical keyboards. Don't know what switches they use but anything is better than rubber dome like the Razer Marauder with it's flashing LEDs lights that tell you how high your APM is lol.
A better SC2 keyboard would be like the ones you see some pros use that use alternating colors on the keys (black/white) to split up the colums so you know where you hand position is and it's easier to group the keyboard mentally into columns (1, q, a, z are white, 2, w, s, x are black, etc.)

I think the purpose of this gear is to give you a StarCraft 2 "feel" not really make you the most uber SC2 player ever to live.
Remember there is a single player mode in this which doesn't require an 800apm keyboard.

Any recommended videos for a total rookie? I played about half of the campaign and 5-6 online matches (got smoked).
I've watched a few vids on hotkeys/grouping, just wanted to see if you guys could recommend any specific series. I'm putting together a new PC soon, probably going to try to get back into the game then. In the meantime I want to watch some vids.
Anything that does a good job of explaining each race's units/counters and what I should be doing at all time (I watched a good Day9 vid for this, I'm gonna try to find it again, it was a sort of mental checklist he runs through at all time).

Search HDStarcraft on Youtube. His commentating is the best.

I personally find him to be the worst. I can't stand HD. Husky is okay. Both of them though are getting on my nerves. I have never liked HD. He often says all the wrong things when he is excited and I can't stand how he says things like: "double raxes!" Barracks is already plural!

oh, I find Husky is mostly entertainment value, and not much actual SC2 commentary. HD is a little better at actual analysis, though not as much lately. Psystarcraft is okay, too.
EDIT: these are the 3 with the best "commentating" voices (that I have found). Like, they don't sound like they are bored and gonna die in the next minute...

Yep, the last link in the OP "Back to the Basics" by Day9 is the best way to get you started (which is what you probably watched back then). Try not to think of strategy as "What unit counters unit X?" since a "counter unit" isn't always going to steamroll its counter. Focus on macro-management first and think about "what unit counters unit x?" later.
Anyway, Day9 has my utmost respect of all the "faces" of SC2 for being an actual former high-level competitor in SC1, with awesome gamesense and ability to teach the fundamental ways of thinking. The passion that he, his brother Tasteless and their friend Artosis have for the game is ridiculous.

Best commentator(s)?
Tastetosis at GOMTV. Artosis has the best understanding of the game, Tasteless is his support, their humorous banter has the best synergy of any commentator I've heard. Day9 has incredibly deep understanding of the game. HD is pretty good overall. Psy is okay. Husky is garbage in terms of game understanding, can't stand his voice either.

Day9 and Artosis are the real fans and have been with Teamliquid and Starcraft since the beginning and have HUGE contributions to the sport. When I hear about Husky or HD, I can't help but think about bandwagoners who just found out about the scene thanks to SC2, had their channel become popular and are now milking it for all its worth via the YouTube Partnership program. He used to purposefully split his videos up into multiple parts in order to multiply the viewership and hence get more money, even though the partnership granted him the ability to upload much longer videos. It wasn't the most ethical thing but it appears he stopped doing that, which is nice atleast.

Kind of neat to see where these guys came from, and what they're doing for the SC2 community today.
Well Husky used to do this because he had a slow internet connection, and his youtube uploads often failed (which happens so its understandable).

HD has been around since the BW days, lol. He deleted most of those videos at the request of youtube before becomming a partner (I only know due to having a group of dead bookmarks when he was talking about countering cheese in BW over bnet). The multiple uploads were probably a mix between money grab and the fact that youtube used to limit videos to 10min, each.

The limit is removed when you become a partner, he still did it for a while despite that. Like beta to shortly after SC2 was being released it was one of the reasons I disliked him, but I just checked now and I see a few 26 minute videos so I'm gonna be optimistic and assume he stopped doing it. And I've never heard of HD in BW, and he only recently registered with TL.

dunno, I don't stick on the TL forums, since I do hate their layout, though he only started doing pro player commentaries in the SC2b. I don't think he had any of that before, as he only had a sack of SC:BW gameplay videos before that.
Though I do hate the fact that be basically was pimping crap from eVGA for a bit, lol. I checked his join date, and it's May 2009, which is wierd, but whatever.
EDIT: ah, I guess he wasn't around that long. Most of his remaining early vids are of his own gameplay.

I also, despite not liking Idra's "bad mood elitist nerd" image, I also support him in his views of Husky and HD. Idra has been a big guy in the SC scene for a while too, and had among the best rankings in Iccup.

Anyway, I don't want to come off too much as a hater, even though I slightly am. I just think there could have been others who are much more deserving of the type of position that HD/Husky have. Who you enjoy is your preference and despite their true motivations - liking the game, or liking the money its bringing, exposing the game to the masses helps regardless.
Also, Artosis himself isn't perfect. He's got all the hookups, experience, and love for Starcraft - and it becomes really evident when he speaks of Warcraft 3. If you ever wanna see a dude who's biased, listen to him. I'm of the "I love Starcraft, and I love Warcraft" crowd, Artosis is the "I love Starcraft, fuck Warcraft!" crowd, and it brings a little nerd rage to me occasionally.
Also, Artosis himself isn't perfect. He's got all the hookups, experience, and love for Starcraft - and it becomes really evident when he speaks of Warcraft 3. yeah, I unsubbed to husky hd and psy a while ago... I was annoyed at husky for what, I don't remember, psy for being a bit of an eliteist (though I think it may of been him joking, in retrospect), and HD, for the aforementioned split videos. I still watch them every once in a while, for the clan wars, but that's about it....

I like Psy because he casts his own games including losses and actually taught me a lot. I think it's important to go through a player's thought process which would be impossible when casting someone else's game.
I dislike Husky because I generally think he's terrible at the game and his casting shows it.
I'm neutral about HD. He's clearly a better caster than Husky but isn't as technical as the other casters. Great for beginners.
I dislike Day9 because... of a lot of little things that annoy me. I really don't like his voice all that much. I know that's really picky, but it annoys me and a caster's voice should be important when determining if you like to listen to them or not. I really really hate when he cuts to shots of himself and starts rambling. Stop it.
I like Crota because he seems like a chill guy and displays a lot of different games. I feel like the two of us think similarly. His actual vocal skills aren't as good as the other casters but I cut him some slack.

Tasteosis are decent but they need to improve on their "killing time" banter. 99% of the time, it's about how its "time to get some pop tarts, some nachos, maybe some peanut butter..."

huh, HD recently did a few co commentaries with painuser, kinda better than normal HD, IMHO. Still won't watch his 9.99 min vids
Generally getting a guy like PainUser or Sheth or anybody else on with a regular caster improves the quality of the cast, simply because there's somebody there with some actual game knowledge.
That's part of why I like the Day9/djWheat combo. Day9 has maybe more pure game knowledge and analytical skill than anybody except probably Artosis, and djWheat has just enough game knowledge to not sound silly and is still an entertaining commentator. Plus the two of them just gel really well.
