Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

Does anybody here know if Star Citizen will allow a player to take multiple missions at one time?

For instance, I have 10 tons free cargo space, one mission requires 6 tons, and another mission requires 4. Why shouldn't we be able to take two missions simultaneously and adjust our travel route for a small detour?

That's my main gripe in Freelancer; you can only do one mission at a time. It's so much nicer to take multiple quests and be more efficient with your time and jump fuel.

I used to play another game called "Escape Velocity" and "EV: Nova".
For anybody who is pledged for Star Citizen, I highly suggest you go download the free trial. I spent over 1000 hours playing EV & EV:Nova.
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/

In this favorite old game of mine, there were a few elements that were much better than Freelancer. Namely, the jump system would allow you to jump quickly and was only restricted by being too close to a planet. In Freelancer the jumps are painful because of the jump-gates and the painfully slow animation process that makes you want to poke your eyes out.

Also, you can take multiple missions at a time in EV, plus you can dominate planets!

i LOVED escape velocity. never did play nova. would play it right now if it was on steam... that game actually came to mind as soon as you mentioned the multiple missions thing because i remember doing that in EV. youd pull up the map in port and see what 2 missions had the biggest payout that were in the same general area. i really hope thye allow that in SC too.

Yeah, I was SUPER excited when they finally ported EVN to Windows, plus there's a plug-in that makes everthing play like the original EV.

Oh man... time to go play Escape Velocity. I love disabling ships, and capturing them. It was a really good way to step-up from a smaller plane to a bigger one. I'd wait until a Kestrel had used all it's missiles and I captured it's two fighters. Then I'd attack and try to capture the Kestrel.

How did you guys decide on what type of ship you wanted when you pledged? Maybe it's because I'm using my cellphone browser but I don't see any stats for the ships.

you can get some stat information here and there but pretty much its all subject to change.

the best way to go about it, is to buy one that fits what you want to do in the game.

bounty hunting, dogfighting, pirating, merchant, exploration, escort etc

Stat sheet for ship info comparison

I read the descriptions of the ships and their use/purpose and decided I didn't want a fighter, but more of a transport & exploration type of ship to start out with. My first in-game ship purchase will most likely be a Hornet.

Sweet. Thanks to all who replied. I'll take a look again later when I'm back on my desktop. Game looks promising!

dont forget that since it looks like you are a first time pledger, depending on the package you want you can possibly get it cheaper by having an Original Backer purchase it for you after you give them the money, so you get the package cheaper, along with life time insurance on the ship.

for example the Digital Colonel package is $125 but for an original backer that same package is $110

Lorien is trustworthy here in the forums ive gifted him 2 pledge packages so far for him to convert to the lower price versions and send me some ship skins back with the lower priced pledge to cover the price difference.

Dangit, I was just reading up on the LTI dealio and realized I just missed the cut-off. Thank you for the heads-up on how I can still get in on the original backers perks. Could you clarify further on how you arranged for this to be done with Lorien? Did you Paypal him the funds and he'd purchase and gift the pledge to you? Or do you mean you gifted him the pledge and he'd gift it back to you?

there are a couple ways to do it, you can probably paypal him money im assuming he has paypal.

but i gifted him my 125$ digital colonel package and he reclaimed it for store credit and then bought the 110$ version and 3 skins (5$ each) to cover the difference.

if you want to give him exact money with gift pledges to have him convert you will have to ask him what the price of the pledge package costs for him and then you would buy any ship or package thats just below that price or = too it,. and if its lower you fill the gap with 1 or 2 skins until you reach the amount.

just keep in mind there is a 24hour grace period from when you buy a package that you cant reclaim it for store credit until the 24hours is up.

Thank you, sir. I'll shoot him a PM later and hopefully he'll be nice enough to help me out.

As far as what ship I should get - what would be a good 1 seater dogfighting craft? It looks like the Hornet is right up my alley but damn it's hideous. Is the 300i that much worse? I'm not really one of those players that gets heavily involved in the economy and macro aspects of games. I just like to go fast and blow stuff up.

Hornet should be quite a bit better in a dogfight, not only do they weigh about the same but the hornet has better maneuvering thrusters, 2 extra class 4 weapon mounts as a turret behing the pilot.

the pilot tho will matter more than the ship. but imo hornet with a good pilot should win against an equally skilled 300i pilot.

there is a 325 version of the 300i that does decently if you want a cheaper option; as of right now the best dogfighting ship is the hornet.

a hornet will absolute DECIMATE a 300i and a 325i.

Chineseman - They're supposed to be revealing the hornet brochure pretty soon (1-2 weeks) followed by the freelancer. The brochure will be similar to that of the 300i or Auorora that included the different models.

What I'm saying is who knows, you might end up liking it. I myself didn't like its looks but was drawn to it after reading more about its specs; the looks then just grew on me. Here's an article that helped confirm I made a good choice in keeping it: http://bluehorizon.se/2943/06/r-and-d-briefing-introduction-to-the-hornet

also about the looks of the hornet, one thing thats cool about it is the wings sweep and move similer to an F-14 so in dogfight mode its pretty wide but sweep the wings back and it helps with the look a bit.

and the big bulky partical scoops next to the cockpit can most likely be changed out for different more sleeker models as you upgrade the ship too.

I personally like the look of the Hornet, mainly because its not some shiny bmw with a few guns tacked on, its a fighter built for dealing damage and taking it. the 300i series looks like if it took a hit it would just shred into tiny pieces.

the powerplant on the 300i is completely exposed once the shields go down its going to be over if a hornet gets a volly any where midship/back

pretty much need to hit the underside on a hornet to get at the power plant

Hey, I was looking in the RSI store and i notice that they are not including star citizen cards in their pledges like they used to. I haven't received my card yet and am worried that if i upgrade my pledge to rear admiral i may miss out on my card. does any one know if this is the case?

what you do is: wait until november when more is known about the ships, then get someone to gift you the one you want.

the chance for a veteran account has passed. veterans have until november to buy and trade LTI ships. there is no benefit to you getting in before november, except 1) funding the game, and 2) getting to see the ship in the hanger module which is 2 months away. since they plan to let people visit other people's hangers, you're left with the only reason to buy before november: to fund the game

anything to do with physical rewards should be taken up with their support folks. they will help you figure it out before you get lost in the cracks forever.

It does look kinda cool, but what is the purpose of this on a ship that flies in space?

I like the look of the Hornet, though I don't think it looks terribly "fighter" like, looks more like a big fat ground support aircraft than a fighter. The M50 looks more like a fighter, but will probably be too soft to be a serious fighter.

Remember that ships can and do have to land on planets and that means the ships have to be capable of atmospheric flight.

P.S: Chineseman contacted me, thanks Wildace for the vote of confidence and explaining to him his options.

With wings swept back the hornet can spin fast enough around its long axis to enter pokeman attack mode. This and the atmosphere thing...will there be fighting in atmosphere? Then bailing out? Strafing ground targets? Using a planets gravity well to ourtrun the pirates? Yadda yadda yadda...I thought I heard no. I choose Pekachu!

Not right away, but there has been talk of atmo flight in the future. not sure about combat though

they are hydrogen gas scoops, the more efficient they are the longer your ships range because they will pick up hydrogen gas in space.

If you originally pledged at a time that you were promised a (physical) Citizen Card, you will still be granted one, most likely. There are some who have received theirs relatively recently, even. Contacting support is definitely the right way to go to ensure that nothing has fallen through the cracks, as bAMtan2 said.

For those who may be wondering what I mean by "Citizen Card", those who pledged during the Original Backer period, and partially into the Veteran Backer period (if I recall correctly), had as part of their package a physical credit-card-like UEE Citizenship card with their backer Handle upon it. Designs varied based on how much you pledged at the time and thus gave your "rank", which was also printed on the card.. For instance, Scout Packages came with a White colored plastic card, that would have your name and "Scout" labeled upon it, along with other flavor text - the same with Mercenary packages (with Mercenary labeled instead of Scout). Bounty Hunter packages had Green cards, Colonels and Freelancers had Bronze ones, Rear Admirals had Silver, Vice Admirals = Gold, High Admirals and Grand Admirals = Platinum , Space Marshall = Black, and Wing Commander = Titanium. Sample cards visible - http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Citizen_cards

It was also notable that at the Vice Admiral/Gold level and above it would not be a plastic credit card style card, but made out of a single sheet of metal instead. There are some rumors that the Titanium Card is actually cut from Titanium (similar to AmEx Centurion "Black Cards" ), but I've not been able to confirm this. For a limited period of time, those who had Silver and Bronze cards could pay $10 and get their card made of metal as well, instead of plastic!

These Citizen Cards were a "one time" printing, so it is no longer possible to secure packages that offer these physical collector's items,, although Chris Roberts has stated he'd be open to considering another run for interested players. Considering that they just recently started selling UEE patches, it looks like there is going to be a good amount of "lore related" swag available for reasonable prices.

Those who are interested in backing and acquiring Original Backer packages and ships (often cheaper, and with better perks like Lifetime insurance), My thread detailing the packages and an overview of the process is here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1771189 . Lorien has also been offering these services to the community; it appears on the thread. Please don't hesitate to PM me if you have any questions.

Yeah, but it still looks like a fatty :p I think mainly because it looks like transport ships in other sci-fi stuff, so it makes me think of a transport ship more than a fighter.

So a new system has been detailed today. 4 inhabitable planets in UEE space each bought by a corporation specializing in different industries.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/unfiled/13141-Galactic-Guide-Stanton-System

I also have some more details about the Hangar module launch event.

So as you know Gamescon is going to take place in Cologne, Germany the last week of August. The price for developers wishing to get a booth to show off their games is about $100,000. This was cost prohibitive for CIG so they came up with an alternative.

They rented this place (http://www.wartesaal.de/09/) an old train station waiting room with room for about 1000 people, 1 mile away from where Gamescon is being held for August 24 from 5PM 'til Midnight.

ser_3.jpg

This is when and where they will launch the Hangar module, there might be a livestream of the whole thing (not clear on that yet). Space is limited so people bringing their citizen cards (or a print out of your pledges if you don't have a citizen card) will be given priority. Concierge and other premium level backers will get a whole hour of group Q&A time with Chris Roberts.

Can't freaking wait.

Lorien has a great example there of how Chris Roberts and CIG are putting together a AAA quality game on a (relatively) small budget - innovative spending! They could have very easily justified the cost to go to Gamescon as a "necessary" one and paid the $100K plus in order to get a booth there (taking advantage of investor/publisher/partner money in order to do so et.c..). Instead they found out a much less expensive endeavor that will make them "center stage" of their own little convention. Instead of being one of many exhibits, they'll now have an exclusive venue to themselves and it is still close enough that not just interested Star Citizen fans, but con-goers and gaming press will all likely drop by to see the unveiling!

If they had a big publisher like EA or Activision behind them, or even if they took a page from those industry titans, CIG could have very easily thought "We HAVE to get a booth because that is what you do, and to not do so means to some corporate-psych marketing dude that we don't have a worthwhile game", but instead they took stock of the reality of the situation and came up with something more innovative, which will likely make a much better impact than simply having a booth, and save money in the process that can be focused elsewhere!

Wow, 100 THOUSAND dollars? To rent a booth for a couple days?

That seems so damn high, how much is e3?

And that $100k is just the cost of the empty booth. You still have to bring in your own media/computers/screens, etc. those don't fly themselves to Germany for free. I bet renting that entire hall plus all travel and logistics related expenses is no more than half the cost of a booth at gamescon.

Also, 100k would probably be some small shitty booth in a back corner where nobody goes. Its probably 500k+ for a good booth.

So I just watched this morning's Wingman's Hangar and a few interesting details were revealed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zQCrvsmzzI

Since the premiere of the 300i commercial during the live stream the game has added 30 thousand new paid pledges.

They showed the progress that's been made with the motion capture studio that was bought with a previous stretch goal. They've hired a pro actor to do the physical stuff as well.

This one is pretty big. The game has a technology that allows your webcam to track your face and map your lip movements during speech to your in-game avatar as well as your voice.

The game will let your friends jump in to man a crew position in your ship instantaneously, no matter where they are in the galaxy. This does break immersion but I rather like it 'cause you never know when you might get jumped by hostiles and need an actual person manning your gun turrest/systems instead of hired NPCs.

YARR!! Mutiny!! There will be measures people can take to prevent hired players from killing you and taking over your ship.

Occulus Rift. The FPS portion of the game will support decoupled view port, movement and gun aiming, allowing you to walk in one directiong, look in another direction while firing in another. So you'd have:

WASD moves your character
Mouse moves/aims your weapon
Occulus Rift moves your camera view port with your head.
Very very cool.

They also announced sew on Patches and Mousepads are now available on the site store. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/physical-add-ons

That seems like a total waste of money to me.
I wish people could vote on whether they implement shit features like that over the more useful stuff.

this is not something cig is making. it's a technology some other company made (i don't know which). cig isn't wasting money on anything, furthermore, just because it's something they'ld like to implement doesn't mean it's something that will be in the initial release of the game.

also, they do conduct polls. why do you think there's ship boarding and a "command and control" interface for larger ships?
