SSD performance drops by 50% when HDD present.

Hi folks,

I just finished my new build and my Samsung 840 Pro was installed earlier today and installed as my boot drive.

Well it performs as advertised and the Samsung Magician program shows that I am setup for maximum performance with Sata 3 and AHCI mode is enabled. Cool. The program also has a performance test feature that I used a few times and shows this beast is flying!

Cool so far. However, I have 4 other disks (HDDs) that I needed to plug up. 3 for a RAID 5 setup and 1 is for Backup.

I've been going at this for hours. Regardless of how many / which HDD I plug in, when I run the performance test in the Samsung Magician software, I get 50% LOWER scores on my SSD! What the? Why would my performance drop by literally 50% on my SSD just by plugging in an IDLE HDD drive?

I unplug my HDDs and keep the SSD plugged up and test it and I'm back to my full performance. My M/B (GA-Z87X-OC) only has 1 Drive controller on it and all 6 ports are SATA 3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I Need to have the HDDs up and running since my SSD is only 128MB and would fill up rather quickly.

If you have 4 identical hard drives why not just do raid 10?
Raid 5 has been shown to be pretty horrible on the Intel firmware raid due
to overhead. Reads are decent but writes blow.

This is not an issue with an actual hardware raid controller.

As for the SSD issue, I assume you have the Intel controller set to raid in bios?

The SB should be able to handle raid 5 parity crunching and allow full SSD speeds.
 
Are you using an on-board controller or a separate controller? If it's on-board, what is your board? I wonder if the controller has to hand off the raid calculations to the processor and that is slowing it down.
 
There might be a background task to check and initialise the RAID array which is slowing you down. And every time you disconnect and then reconnect it has to check drive contents for consistency again. You may have to wait 4 to 12hrs for this to finish. Check the RAID controller or software for what it is doing and you can also change the rate eg. from 50% to 20% if your priority is using the SSD now.
 
You need to at least post your system specs so we know what you're working with hardware wise.
