SSD Nightmare :(

So I got my rig all put together, and I turned it on for the first time and no hard drives detected in POST. Well, I have two connected to Sata 6 (2 vertex 3's) via the Hot plugs of my Maximus IV. After the initial post phase, I get sent into BIOS because I have no choice apparently. In there it sees at least one of my two SSD's. So now I'm confused. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong here?

Maximus IV Z68 (bios updated)
AHCI Enabled
Fresh/Virgin Vertex 3 120G in 6GB Sata ports

Have you ruled out bad cables, power connectors, or bad sockets on the motherboard. Figure out which drive is being detected and hook up the other drive with those components.

Try booting with only 1 drive connected. Hook the drives up to another system with an os installed and see if they are working there.

Doesn't sound like that big of a nightmare.
Like DonDon stated, check the connection, cable, and PSU.

Also make sure all ports are enabled on your mobo.
You could try the other SSD in that specific slot with the same cables to rule out the SSD.

If all of that passes, it could just be a faulty SSD. Not a big deal, just RMA if you are within the time frame.
You need to do some troubleshooting before you come here though.

Having one SSD on the first POST not show up without any other testing isn't what I would classify as a "SSD nightmare". ;)

agreed.
if you had a bunch of stuff installed and no back-up, might be more of a reason to start pulling hair.

i was expecting to see a ssd die real early or something lol, not a nightmare at all.

It is a nightmare :( I dropped 9 grand in high end parts, monitors, and water cooling. Got it all installed and I can't even load windows! Anyway I dropped my ssd into my old comp, it found it and started installing windows on it. Took it out, put it on my new comp and it found windows and started loading but blue screened of course. I figure the problem now is the motherboard. Asus garbage really. Figure it isn't letting me run my windows disk, so I'm going to RMA it :(

I have a friend with a Z68 Asus board and when he first got his, he could only see one of two drives at a time, even though both drives were fine. I can't remember if it was a bios update or something else that did the trick for him, but eventually, after several weeks, he was able to get windows installed with both drives.

Asus makes very good mobos, they aren't garbage, unlike those Sandforce SSDs you bought.

No, it's not a nightmare. Bit of a headache maybe, but you made it sound like your PSU blew up and you lost all of your hardware outside of warranty time periods.

I agree with the others, the SSD is most likely at fault.
Have you tried it on any other ports on the mobo aside from the one you said it didn't work in?

Asus garbage?? I know that building a new PC is a tad stressful when all those shiny new parts don't work like you expect them to, but it sounds like you're pointing fingers at the first thing you think it might be instead of troubleshooting (test with a standard hard drive) and then finding what the problem is. Could it be the board? sure, though in this case I think your drives could be to blame. As said earlier in the thread go over to the ocz forum and see if they may have a fix for the drives:

Another suggestion would be to download and install the latest BIOS for your motherboard. While you're at it you may want to research if there's any new firmware updates on the drive that you have. I'm pretty sure that should fix it... If not, get a refund and buy a intel ssd as they tend to be more rock solid.

BTW does the board see the CDROM drive? Can you boot a live cd linux off that?

Well considering he hasn't followed any of our advice, insists that the problem is bigger than it really is, and apparently he knows everything, we should just leave him to it.

i guess it goes to show that money cant guarantee happyness...

or relace basic troubleshooting knowledge...

I'm amazed someone managed to drop 9 bills on a PC!

That's what I was thinking.
If one were investing 9 grand into a system, wouldn't you go for a quad-socket setup with 12-core processors? Why the single-slot mobo? That wasn't even $400, where did the other $8600 go? :p

haha, didn't even think about the monitors, but yeah, that would totally add up.

LOL!

Why would you try to do anything else?

I remember installing 2 ssds on the maxims, trying to raid and it just wont work with the marvell controllers. It works fine with the sata2 ports tho.

yeah asus tends to be picky in terms of their sata interface. my old crosshair iv (the amd equivalent of the maximus) didnt work with certain drives either

i recommend updating the bios on the motherboard first.

on your original post you stated that it detects at least 1 of the drives. how many does it detect exactly? both of them?

if it detects both of them, then you are in luck, if not, then you may be one of the many unlucky ocz owners

My did not detect either in the System Bios but when you go to the Boot Order section it will be listed. I'm sure it's the Boot order problem he's having. Did the same thing to me when I connect a HDD into one of the Sata controller.
