What options are out there for SSD caching on the desktop? Is there anything out there drive and motherboard agnostic?
1. Intel SRT.
1a. How do you know what motherboards this is available on?
1b. Does this work only on MSATA ssds?

2. ASUS caching software.

3. NVELO dataplex.
3a. Only available with bundles and those bundles seem to have disappeared. Now that Samsung bought them out I assume it will turn into Samsung specific compatibility for the next revision.

4. ??

I've used a Crucial Adrenaline setup that bundled NVELO dataplex software with it. Seemed to work well but it and other bundles like it are pretty much gone these days. Everything else I can find for ssd caching software is server based and far too expensive for the computers I'm selling or upgrading.

Although this will not help you (since it clearly looks like you are asking for MS Windows solutions). The mainline linux kernel 3.9 will have built-in SSD caching (instead of having to use an external module like flashcache or bcache) so that will be an option for linux users.

Thanks. I'll do some reading on that. I have rolled out some Linux Mint computers in recent years for people on a strict budget. Usually they don't have the budget for a SSD but that might change as they get cheaper.

It should be available on any P67 or P77 chipset motherboard, and it will work with any SSD.

Cache size is limited to a maximum of 64GB, but you can use any left over space on the drive as a regular partition. I have a 128GB Samsung drive, with 64GB used for cache and the other 64GB as an E: drive where I run Skyrim from.

You're not limited to only caching your boot drive either, like you are with the NVELO product.

Have you considered the hybrid ssd/hdd like the Seagate Momentus XT?

Having 4 of these at work I would advise against that. I never ever see the benefit of the cache in this drive in my usage. I do not have fast boots (or good IOPS) on any of the 3 machines that have these disks in them. Although it could be my usage pattern is not putting the data that I want in the cache and instead is caching data I do not want...

I guess it would come down to usage patterns and/or user type. I personally put them into systems like parents and such, so they don't have to manage ssd space, and they don't have to worry about caching software issues. Completely transparent to them, which makes it easier for me when they call having problems.

Those are pretty fricken cool and had not heard of that sort of consumer based device. It's like a poor mans LSI cachecade. Might have to give one a shot.
