So I've been running SLI'd GTX470 since roughly the day I got my SR2. I've never had my L5640s in there without both GPUs being in there also.

Anyway, long story short, I pulled out one GPU recently to prepare for a hardware move. I haven't been running any GPU clients on there.

TPF with two GPUs: 14:30 range
TPF with one GPU: 13:45 range

Min. Time / Frame : 00:13:17 - 127,211.5 PPD
Avg. Time / Frame : 00:13:47 - 120,352.6 PPD
Cur. Time / Frame : 00:13:42 - 120,418.0 PPD
R3F. Time / Frame : 00:13:42 - 120,418.0 PPD
All Time / Frame : 00:13:57 - 118,260.0 PPD
Eff. Time / Frame : 00:14:00 - 117,837.7 PPD

(keep in mind, no GPU clients are running)

So, simply removing a card from a PCIe slot boosted my performance drastically. I got about a 15k PPD boost from those 30-45 seconds (depending on the frame). I think there are only a few of us in this same "SR2 with multiple GPUs" club, (somebody else has dual 470s....is it nitro?) but this might help somebody else.

Makes me wonder if the 2nd GPU was holding me back from disabling NUMA as well. Makes me want to try.

Yup, musky went through all of this mos. ago and why he, and I, have no GPUs inside our SR-2's. In fact, I went so far as to disable all PCI-E slots except for the one I need for basic the basic x300 GPU.

Your inability to disable NUMA still puzzles me but it might be worth trying again.
 
So just not having the card in the system at all drops a minute from your tpf? I assume you never folded on it even when it was in there. That is odd, but it also doesn't surprise me that much. Ask me about how recording TV costs me 10K ppd on my 970. If you breath on these stupid things, your ppd plummets.

I think you're referring to the huge penalty associated with folding on the GPUs. This ~10-15k PPD swing happened just with the card sitting in the slot.

Yeah. numa sucks for me. It's probably my ram, but I'm going to give it a shot. Only problem is, I have to clear CMOS every time numa disable fails. :rolleyes:

So is the SR-2 bootable without any GPU's installed? I know its possible on some boards, in fact it may be possible, because when I was having the problem with my graphics in slot one, the computer would seemingly complete post, but not display video.

I wonder about different models? ATI vs Nvidia, older vs newer. I'm curious now to see if that does make any difference.

It still shocks me how much basic tasks like browsing decimates the time per frame. Not to mention running a game. I'm better off just halting the client.
 
That is nice and wierd - but FYI I have 2 SLI GTX 460's in SR2#1 and there is certainly no folding penalty with them idle. Apart from wasted watts.
 
This is all interesting. I have SLI GTX 295s in my desktop SR-2, along with a Sound Blaster card, but I prioritize gaming over extra PPD. This box may mostly run BOINC anyway.
 
Very interesting information. Planning to upgrade my Sig Rig to an SR-2 (at some point) and as my Sig Rig is also my gaming rig, plan to have GPUs in there. I am planning to do 2x GTX580's as I want to do 3D Surround on 3x 24" LCDs.

I would love to still be able to run GPU3 clients. I don't think I'll be able to find any Hex Cores that are reasonably priced so I'll probably be going Quad Core (probably E5620's).
 
I hate to say it, but I would recommend considering another option for your gaming rig. I just moved my 470s into a single socket rig due to the issues with the sr2
