Yep. Thats actually Intel's current strategy with 1156 and1366. 1156 only has dual channel RAM, fewer pcie lanes, etc. it makes sense to me as well, and the fact that some of Intels changes to the low end might end up limiting overclockability is probably not a big deal for most people.

well it's a big deal for those budget minded people that want a little extra performance.. looks like AMD will get a nice profit when sandybridge comes out for all those people on a budget that dont want to keep using a dead end socket like lga-1156 and 1366 when sandybridge comes out..
 
where all on dead end sockets. some just last longer than others. ill take a guess and say AM3 is on its last leg too. this time next year most of us will be on a different socket at least on our main rig. Hell at one point in time i had the biggest home farm ever build by a [H] folder and it would still be the biggest just old and out dated. things change time moves on and farms get sent to the dump.

Yeah all my dualies might be outdated next year, but if i dont run F@H there isnt anything i do that even comes close to stressing my systems. At worst these will last me a good 5 years.
 
My SR-2 rig even with 5530 and not hex cores should last me years for gaming and the like. It will probably be a bit over a year before it becomes my main rig.

If I up to hex cores its like adding a third proc.
 
Back on topic, what do you figure the odds are of an E5502 SLBEZ OEM chip working? The E5506 is officially supported. This is a non-ES Nehalem chip, so maybe. $225 is about the cheapest E5506 chip I can find.
 
I dont even know where to look, but I got mine from 2CPU, I dont know where to look for xeons tho, new grounds for me
 
musky, did you ever get this figured out? I ask because I now see that the E5530 is now finally listed as a supported CPU. I am sure it requires a BIOS update however so you may still need to find a cheap supported chip to flash it. From EVGA's website:

Yes, I did. I bought an E5620 and am currently using a custom bios with the microcodes for my E5530 ES chips that LOCO LAPTOP made for me.

Just got my SR-2 and I'm super stoked, but clever me also got some B0 ES 5530 chips, and I'm experiencing the same issue as musky.

Do ya think you could make that modded BIOS available? PLZZZZZ?? :p

...now I've gotta beg one of my clients to let me borrow a 5520 for the night... :(

I'll certainly give it a whirl... At the moment it's not really up to the task.

First of all, I've got to give Musky and LOCO another shout out. After getting a loaner CPU and flashing my BIOS, I'm up and running. Writing this on my new schweeet machine. Couldn't have done it without you guys!

Secondly, I have to admit that my system isn't ready for primetime yet. I spent all my pennies on the basics: Case, Mobo, CPUs and heatsinks.

So, right now I'm using the following as stop-gaps: (don't tease me too hard...)

12x 1GB PC-8500 ECC DIMMs mooched from clients that upgraded their Nehalem Mac Pros (Having Mac RAM in my system sorta makes me want to puke, and to add insult to injury... it's blue) Hey, what can I say. It was free.

Antec 550 Watt PSU (Can you see why I'm not overclocking yet...?)
Honestly I'm pretty durn impressed that it even boots this monster... It's a testament to Antec's high quality PSUs, but even when I'm at standard voltages and moderate CPU usage it's blowing very warm air. I've got to get my watt-meter over here to see just what it's pulling, but suffice it to say I'm not gonna be extreme overclocking with it.

1x MSI GeForce GTX 260

1x MSI GTS 8800 320MB

...so

My next paycheck will be getting me:

a nice 1100 Watt PSU

2x 12GB (3x 4GB) DDR3 1600 memory kits

2x GeForce GTX 470 graphics cards

I think I'm even gonna try to make sure the color scheme is maintained... puh.

If any of you guys have some really nice experience with any particular SKU related to the goodies I have on my wish list above I'd certainly appreciate your feedback!

We_are_theBorg havent you been around longer than 3.7 years? i seem to remember than name from a long time ago. you might wanna look at the gtx-460's $ vs performance than pretty much spank anything.
 
PSU recommendations:

Enermax Revolution 1050W: $244 or 1020W for $223

Corsair 1000W for $199 or 1200W for $288

I think you'd get a general consensus among the whole team that you won't find many better PSUs out there than those.

Lehmann, I have the same handle in several places, starting probably back in the '90s, when Star Trek TNG was still hapenin', but haven't traditionally been a big poster.

You're certainly correct about the GTX 460 vs. 470 argument, and I would love to get 460s on general price/performance considerations, the only current problem I have is that at the moment Adobe is artificially limiting the graphics cards that will work with Premiere Pro CS5. As you can see currently the 470 (not even the 480...) is the only supported Fermi card. While this is super annoying and expensive (and really, just stupid), I'm sort of stuck with it, as Premiere Pro CS5 is one of the applications I need to run. Hey, at least they're cheaper than the Quadro FX cards.

Jebo, thanks for the suggestions. I'll absolutely take them under consideration. Incidentally what do you think of the ABS Majesty series MJ1100-M. It's an 1100 Watt 80 Plus Gold certified single rail modular PSU, and seems to be very well thought of. I generally hear good things about ABS. One thing I particularly like about this PSU is that it's got 2x EPS 12v 8 pin power headers for the SR-2 so I don't have to use the cheesy splitter I'm using now.

The god of the BIOS known as LOCO Laptop has gifted the community with a version of the A49 BIOS for the eVGA Classified SR-2 that gets rid of some serious frowny memory errors while still supporting the Engineering Sample version of the Xeon E5530 procesor. GET IT HERE
