Sorry I have not really been following this forum for a few months because of my new job taking up a lot of my time.

I was wondering what the best smart phone available for Sprint will be in October? I can upgrade my phone then and thought I would start some research now. I know you guys are more into what is coming down the pipe so I figured I would ask you.
 
The EVO is probably the most highly rated phone right now, and it's on Sprint's 4G. Not sure if there will be a "better" version out by October.

Seriously the Epic and EVO will probably be their flagship phones until at least christmas. Both are solid choices.
 
I love my Evo. Don't let the screen on the Epic (galaxy) decide for you... If you want a physical keyboard, get the Epic. Otherwise, the deck is stacked in the Evo's favor.
 
I played with an EVO the other day and the phone is very big.
 
I'm next in line to get an EVO, they have been a pain in the balls to get ahold of in my area. The EVO just edged out the Epic in some reviews, either is a solid choice, depends on your keyboard prefs
 
Evo: 4.80 x 2.60 x 0.50 inches (122 x 66 x 13 mm) / 6oz
Epic: 4.90 x 2.54 x 0.56 inches (124 x 65 x 14 mm) / 5.5oz

Pretty much the same size. Evo makes much better use of the phone screen... Goes almost edge to edge to get that 4.3in screen to fit. Toss on a copy of Swype and you are golden for a keyboard.

The Epic has Swype as well as a physical keyboard, has the amazing Super AMOLED screen, and a much better GPU.

Epic and Evo are both fantastic choices - can't go wrong with either.
 
Pretty easy. You want physical keyboard, Epic. Other wise Evo.
 
Unless you need the physical keyboard (and swype is a HUGE way to negate that anyway) the EVO is fucking awesome.

Strange that the Epic is lighter and a tiny, tiny bit bigger than the EVO even though the former the supposed "extra bulk" of a physical keyboard.

If I were on Sprint, I'd probably go EVO, though. I do love my Captivate, however.

That Seidio 3500mAh battery doesn't look too bad on the EVO either, unlike the one for the Incredible which looks UTTERLY RIDICULOUS.
 
I'm getting the Epic as a demo phone at my store, and my manager has the EVO. I tend to go towards a pure touchscreen design, and he told me (after playing with the Epic extensively during manager meetings) that he'll trade me the EVO for the Epic in a heartbeat. From what I've been reading/seeing, and knowing that there WILL be a Cyanogen mod for the Epic, that might be the way to go.

Also coming for Sprint in the coming months:

Blackberry Touchscreen/full QWERTY/Clamshell - Think a cross between the Torch and the Pearl Flip.
LG Android - Supposed to look like the LG Maximus but for CDMA, full metal casing
Motorola Droid2/Pro-like device
Blackberry Curve 9330 - meh, who cares.
WinMo 7 - Probably 2 devices by Christmas
 
I have had Swype on my Evo since 20 minutes after I got it. That's a non-issue... I still think that the Fresh ROMs are more stable than Cyanogen imo... Custom kernels are fun too... Can make a modded Evo whip the DroidX or Epic like a red headed stepchild...
 
From what I have seen the Epic boasts a much faster GPU and only slightly faster CPU. The GPU isn't used much but in the future I am sure many developers will be making use of it. I prefer to epic just because the screen, battery life and shape.
 
I have not seen any definite numbers on the hummingbird being faster than the snapdragon. It is so easy to spank the shyte out of the Epic with almost any ROM... Also, when will the Epic get FroYo? Evo has had it officially for a while now
 
Ignore the fanboyish comments. The fact is that the Epic has a significantly faster graphics chip, a much, much better S-AMOLED screen, and a physical keyboard. You would really need to love Sense UI THAT much to choose it over the technologically superior Samsung.

yes because comparing official 2.2 or customs roms to a stock 2.1 phone that hasnt even been released is meaningful :rolleyes:
 
I don't know why people are getting heated about this, they are both two of the best phones in the US market, which one you like is per preference only
 
Haha, that's how it is in the technology world. People who adopt early are always angry at those who wait. They need to realize that technology advances every day. Of course your product will be obsolete to the next one. They just want to justify their expensive purchase and tout their product to be the greatest for the next 2 years.
 
It still comes down to on screen keyboard and 8mp camera or slide keyboard and 5mp camera to me. I do not see any 3d games like exzeus that do not run on my evo perfectly... By the time there are things that need more performance, it will be upgrade time anyway

I'm not the guy that wants to get an evo just to ebay it from a couple days ago...

This is complete speculation and you know it. I still have not even heard a peep about any new 4g sprint phones... Figuring the evo and epic will still be the flagship phones this holiday season... So if they don't want to wreck holiday sales, they need to put enough distance between december and the new releases to dissuade people from just waiting for the new handsets... That makes it february or march release... There really are no more secret phones... The info gets leaked to xda or other sites months in advance almost without exception.

And, if there is something in the works for a holiday release, and I actually want it, then I will sell my evo for a great chunk of change to anyone that doesn't want to renew their contact. I take care of my phones. Invisashield and sedeio active II case plus accessories sell quickly.

Oh, and yes, a GS13 step 5 does pretty damn good in my locality.
 
Actually what I meant was that technology progresses rather quickly. In 6 months time it's not unreasonable for your device to struggle with a new applications. The point is, theres no need to cry foul when a new device is released on the market competing for the top spot, it's technological advancement and perfectly normal. You live with what you have now and the longer you wait, the better the product you will receive.

Just got back from my mini vacation to my store, and my Epic was waiting for me. Such an amazing device, not cheap feeling at all. The screen is amazing, the device feels VERY solid, I'm quite happy with it.

How is the screen on the Epic? I am trying to compair it against the Iphone4
 
Head to the AT&T store and you can look at the Captivate(same screen as the Epic) and the iphone 4 at the same time.

I'm the advocate for the device at my store. I get it early to show off to customers and educate my coworkers.

As for the screen, it's simply amazing. The Captivate has the same screen.
 
I would guess that Sprint will not have a better phone than the Evo or Epic by October, but they may have a newer phone soon after. I'm looking forward for news on the Galaxy Q phone and if it will be released on Sprint. Either way, I'll still wait until I've held both the Evo and the Epic to decide which I want. I love sliders, but I've used the Evo and I like it. Most reviewers have given the nod to the Epic when comparing the two. Gizmodo, Slashgear, and Laptopmagazine say the Epic is better than the Evo, while PCMAG and CNET give them equal ratings (8.7..compared to Iphone 4's 8.6) and Engadget being the only review I've found which states the Evo is better

I second that the Evo or Epic will be your best choice. I'm still waiting for HTC to release the Touch Pro 3(If Ever). Sero really limits phone choices. :(
 
You cant go wrong with either. i have the EVO and i have read the epic reviews. Its not enough for me to make that switch (my wife's upgrade is in a couple of months) nor regret having the EVO. Its badass. HTC sense layer is very nice and from all reviews i have read, they weren't too fond of samsung UI over android especially compared to HTC sense. The question is do you want to pay $50 more for a keyboard or not?
 
I'd factor the faster GPU and CPU into that $50 as well, not just the keyboard. Well, I'd actually count the physical keyboard as a mark against it since they make the phone too thick imho.

Honestly, the phone doesn't feel any thicker than the Hero or the EVO. Frankly, it feels "right", and I'm not that big of a guy. Definitely feels better in my hand than the Moment does, and it feels quite similar to the Intercept.

As for Sense vs Touchwiz, both have their pros and cons. Sense's flip clock/weather widget is king, but you can replace that with a $2 widget from the market, a near perfect replica. Sense's calendar and weather widgets are simply excellent, and so far I haven't found any replacements for them that work quite as well.

As for Touchwiz, it just feels cleaner and more like stock. The widgets are OK, some seem pretty nice in my limited experience with them. The buddy widget, for instance, is a lot better than Sense's favorite contacts widget. I don't really both with FriendStream or Samsung's version, but I'll test it out further shortly. The one thing that bothers me about TouchWiz is the launcher at the bottom of the screen. I use Handcent for SMS, and if I could replace the Messages app with Handcent (or even redirect the icon), it would be perfect. I'm sure it will be possible with root access, but honestly, it SHOULD do this level of customization right out of the box.

^^^^ I never liked sense... If you like the feel of stock, try Launcher Pro (or buy LP Plus for the widgets)...

The Epic is only 1mm thicker... I fingered the fake demo today... It's pretty damn nice feeling in my hand...

entropism, if you have access to an evo, could you do a lil compare between text on both screens?
 
Rune, there's definitely a screen door effect on the Epic, but it's pretty easy to get used to. Text looked pretty crisp though, in the short time I had with the phone. You have to understand that my quotas have gone up 350% since June, so I don't have MUCH time to play, but I'll see what I can do.

Not a great review, though, the reviewer doesn't realize that the Epic DOES have youtubeHQ and also refers to the phone as the Captivate when describing the music player.

To me, the iPhone 4's DPI is far too high, while the Epic's is nearly perfect. The 4's display is brighter and shows text a bit crisper, but the Epic has better viewing angles, substantially better contrast/black levels, and more pleasing colors (not necessarily more accurate).

Also, the Epic's touchscreen (like all Galaxy S models) has amazing 5-finger multi-touch (Google it) that is better than any other Android phone to date. It could compare favorably with the 4.

As for the Evo, I'm sorry, but although it is a great phone, it has NOTHING over the Galaxy S other than a camera with flash.
 
so when will there be an Epic in stores? I would like to compare them. I know I still have a few months to make my decision but it would be nice to see them side by side.
