Hey guys I am going to fork out some cash for a new speaker system, here are my questions:

1. I am currently looking at these 2 speakers

http://www.londondrugs.com/Cultures...y=All Speakers&ProductID=0936856&ProductTab=3

or

http://www.londondrugs.com/Cultures...y=All Speakers&ProductID=9710690&ProductTab=3

I know there is a huge price difference but I want your input about the quality and 2.1 vs 5.1

2. For the speakers I am buying above, will I need a soundcard to get the best quality results out of them? If so what should I buy (cheaper is better)

BTW this is mostly for the Drum N' Bass music (old pendulum ftw!)

Semi-seriously: what in the hell could you possibly be doing on your PC that would actually warrant connecting a $1,200 pair of speakers and a receiver to it?

And yes, you'll either need a decent soundcard or a good digital output on your onboard or whatever audio before you should even think of getting either of those.

1. I love how this store offers prescription meds and expensive electronics.

2. I've got over $1200 invested in my computer's audio system. Worth every penny!

I'm well past that, although admittedly a lot of it is redundant (e.g. I have two int amps, a headphone amp, a Stax transformer, a DAC, seven or so sets of headphones, two sets of speakers...).

If I wanted to do it cheap, AV40s + HARX + Yuin PK3s would be nice.

Nice! I'm thinking about replacing my current 3.1 AV123 x-series speakers with a new HSU speaker setup: pair of HSU HC-1 MK 2 Horn Center Channels + VTF-1 subwoofer. I'm not sure how much I'd miss not having that third speaker, though.

If you're looking for reasonably high-end speakers, the best advice you can get is to go listen to some. Personally, I HATE the sound of Klipsch, but lots of people like it (they're dumb ;)).

Don't move from AV123 to HSU. Just upgrade in the AV123 line, or if you go somewhere else, let it not be HSU.

Tower speakers are great... if you can set them up properly. If you sit right in front of your desk, then you have to have the tower speakers right next to it, toed in, and at ear level. It will make the sweet spot pretty much only your chair. If you do both nearfield and farfield listening then the best thing to do is have good bookshelf speakers on the desk for nearfield and towers placed properly for farfield.

Yeah, main reasons I haven't gotten towers yet are space and nearfield listening. If I had room for the traditional couch setup I'd be all over them. For that matter when I do, I will be. ELT towers are up B-stock often enough (okay, not rosewood, but...).

Well, just to add, you could technically put rubber feet on the "top" of a slim bookshelf speaker and put it on your desk upside down if you really want to. lol. Nothx for me though.

Speakers are generally rectangular objects which, when inverted, still have exactly the same footprint.

I still fail to see what your point is.

It means you can put them on a desk and have them at approximately the right height. I think my aversion to it would mainly just be looks (assuming the desk is sturdy enough to begin with)

I am serious lol

Go big or go home

I imagine everybody's going to recommend the Asus Xonar Essence STX. Just a hunch.

Thread's been here three days and so far you're the only one that has.

Your posts thus far fail to deliver and are edging towards "troll"...care to try again?

Hey, nobody's mentioned any specific sound cards at all until now (and through that door lies the whole analog-output-versus-digital-output thing, onboard DACs, consumer vs. prosumer vs. pro, and so on). And while it's out of my price range, I was serious about the STX; folks generally seem to like it, so what's wrong with it?

(Sidebar: for what it's worth, redbonefish, way back in my first reply in this thread I was admittedly kneejerking over the idea of spending 1.5 times my current monthly mortgage amount on a set of speakers for a PC. It wasn't you, it certainly ain't [H], but it's the truth. And with that I'm backing out of the thread before ashmedai gets the rope.)

What are you going to use to power these speakers? You can't just take speakers and ram them up a soundcard.

Also, why do you keep referring to the sets as 5.1 and 2.1? There isn't a subwoofer included, therefore they are 5.0 and 2.0 sets.

Also, you have to go listen to speakers to know whether or not you like the sound they produce. I don't dislike Klipsch, but I don't own them. There are other speakers that I have purchased instead when it was time to fork out the dollars.

Why are you looking at these speakers, and specifically, why are you comparing them to each other?

Why? There are other options for getting quality sound out of the PC (external DAC), and the OP also has the option of feeding digital out to a high-end receiver with a built-in DAC.

Decided on a pair ELT525 center channels instead of the HSU speakers (thanks to the Dragon), tho I might get a third if I can dig up a little mo' money.

With a speaker setup that serious you should probably focus on finding an external DAC rather than getting a sound card... although a Xonar would be the way to go if you are unwilling to get a USB DAC.

Wow that sounds great Mr. Wolf. Will you be posting your setup on the "post your speaker thread"? I for one would love to see your setup.

Is the OP coming back? I did question the genuineness of his/her post, but wasn't sure.

Oh yeah, pics are mandatory. I'll post my x-series Encores in the For Sale threads, too. Maybe someone can use a good pair of bookshelves and/or a center speaker.

I am an audio nub and the reason why I am getting this speakers because well I don't really know any other brands and that the fact my dad has a pair of Klipsch from '85 and they still sound better than my logitech x8s
