Sparks = bad

Well my wife went to turn on the pc and she said there was a spark...... Awesome...

Specs:
i7 970
Asus Rampage III Formula
12gb skills
EVGA 470
2 x Intel 160 SSD
Antec 850

I pulled the PSU and it's bad. Used my PSU tester and only lights up the 5V rail. I have a 500 watt and put that in. Machine will power up, but will only stay on for 5 seconds and will then power down. I have unplugged everything except for the 24 pin and 6 pin for the mobo. Still does the same thing. 'Pulled the cmos battery still the same.

Thoughts on my next troubleshooting? I will obviously need a new PSU, I hope that's it, but I am guessing it won't be.

Pretty much try a larger PSU.

Powering on for roughly 5 seconds, no beep, then powering down, from my experience, means dead motherboard.

Could be the PSU though as mentioned above. Best way to test for that would be to remove the graphics card, power on, and see if you then get a no VGA card present beep. If you still get no beeps, then yeah, probably the mobo is dead.

FYI no beeps at all always means either the cpu or motherboard is dead. I've never seen a CPU die under normal conditions. Not once. And I put all my chips through hell and back when I overclock, so my best guess is dead mobo (assuming the psu you're testing with is fine).

Your board is fried also. No way a 500w should have problems powering a bare board

Did you let the magic smoke out? Man, that stuff is /impossible/ to get back in there, too...

pulled the video card, no beep, no nothing..... Still powers up for 5 seconds and dies. Guess I need to look for a mobo too :'(

Definitely sounds like a dead mobo, any chance you can get your hands on another psu?
