Whats a good spaced base game, thats free to play preferably, I don't care if its single player either...good graphics required. Besides eve? (played it for like 4 years tired of it now)

Thanks gents

are you looking for a space MMO or just any space basesd game?

I've been hearing good thigns about Sins of a Solar Emipre, RTS type of game.

I always had a good time playing Freelancer as well; it's pretty open ended and has a fun multi-player element to it.

I was just thinking the other day "Where have all the great space sim games gone?" Seems like the game industry has all but given up on the Genre

I know you said good graphics are a must but here are a some of my favorite space sims that are great fun - just a bit long in the tooth:

Tie Fighter
Descent: Freespace
Descent: Freespace 2

That said - The X series is pretty much the only recent space sim I've heard of in recent years but I felt it was a little to open and involved to much micromanagement to really get into. The latest in that series is X3: Reunion.

Freelancer is the Pinacle of Space Combat Games from a First Person Perspective.

Agreed, I had a blast playing in a 6 to 8 man LAN against the AI; while some of us were out ‘fighting the good fight’ the rest were running freighter missions to make extra cash. It got a bit repetitive after a while but switching it up with human players was fun.

Freelancer is a bit repetitive, but it's still fantastic. There are still quite a few active servers running.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a must if you're a fan of 4x or RTS.

Galatic Civilizations is popular, but it is turn based. The last Star Trek game got some decent reviews, a few problems with it from what i heard, but a lot of people seem to like it.

If you are referring to ST Legacy, please tell me you are joking! The only way it is remotely playable is if you use a 360 controller, add tons of mods, and forget that a ton of the advertised features were removed from the final game. Even then it is only mildly entertaining. It was discovered shortly after release that most of the game's code was the exact same as ST Armada 2 with some extra crap thrown in. Most people who bought it wish they hadn't.

Bridge Commander is one of the most regarded of the ST games although I've never played it. There are some graphical updates for it as well if you find a copy.

The Only part I really found Repetative was some of the re-hashed Dialog for talking to people in bars.. Other than that.. It was Great..

Oh.. One Hint, Its VERY tempting to Keep playing the story line missions one after another. It is actually in your best interest to take a couple of missions "off" and build up as large a fortune as you can and build your ship up. It also behooves you to hunt down a couple of the 10 "lost" experimental cannons that are hidden throughout the game in various "wrecks" There are several game guides to point you there...

There is even a "Million Credit Run" you can make once you have unlocked all of the systems at later stages in the game.

haha, Solaris on Atari 2600. Best ever. LOL

All joking aside, I liked X3 a lot. I havent reinstalled it lately, but it was good.

Galactic Civilizations is simply outstanding. If you like Civilization type games then you should bite on this one.

Freelancer kicked ass, but it was short as hell. Also, the remake of Star Control II is just awesome, although the real time combat annoys me.

Independence War 2 was good if you can find it..

although the top are the freespace series.. and Tie Fighter..

another one you might enjoy, is Nexus - The Jupiter incident..

its kindof a neat game, you can check out the demo Here

http://www.nexusthegame.com/

best part is its only 10$ on steam.. (almost as good as being free)

one game i could never get into but is free now is battlecruiser 3000AD

that and Universal Combat

http://www.3000ad.com/site/free_games/

can't comment as i only tried them for a minute, if you got into them they might be good.

ohh and if you really want real "space" check out orbiter 2006 http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/ but its a simulator in every respect.. i enjoy it though and another freebie. (get the texture pack with it)

Another vote here for Sins of a Solar Empire. It has the best UI I have ever seen in a game. That's icing on the cake for an already great game.

QFT. My favorite space game of all time, been having a blast with it lately.

I loaded up Freelancer because of this thread, as well as the 'Discovery" mod. I noticed that enemy ships use shield regeneration now, as well as hull repair. Is this a feature of the mod, or something from the stock game I don't remember? It's annoying as hell, takes about 2-5 min to destroy an enemy. Perhaps it's more "realistic" that NPC's have the same abilities as you, but it just isn't fun.

Are there any other mods you guys would recommend?

There was a site, Lancer's Reactor or something that had a shitload of stuff.. Might want to check it out..

Adding 4 "Nomad" guns to your ship makes it a lot of fun.

I'm going to pimp:

Beyond the Red Line. It's a Battlestar standalone mod based on the Freespace 2 engine. Its still a work in progress, but there's a demo of what they've got up on the site. It's only 3-4 missions in length, but the ability to slide your ship is fun.

Freespace 2 also went open source, there's a lot of FS2 projects going on, and there are a lot of graphic mods out there for it as well. The whole game is free to download, and imo, FS2 is the pinnacle of space-sim games. I loved the Lucas Star Wars games and Wing Commanders to death, but they always gave me a sense of flying in a bubble or manning a turret while things flew around me. It's hard to explain, but FS2 actually made it feel like I was flying through space.

I wish a new Freelancer based game would come out... I'd pay big money for that game...

Yes, me too. There is a dirth of any good space combat/trading games. All we seem to get on the PC are first person shooters and RTS games. No wonder PC gaming is in trouble. Software companies need to show some imagination.

A Hornet or X-wing and TIE fighter with current gen graphics? Yes, please!

What was the name of the fighter/bomber from WC? Thunderbolt?

Freespace or Homeworld...two games on a very short list that I can always go back and replay.

These are all old games being mentioned again, which is very sad. The only relatively new game with excellent modern graphics is X3 but that game is like having a job instead of playing a game. There's also Space Force which is decent but with cheesier graphics.

X3 probably is the most graphically beautiful Space Sim ever released.

I enjoyed SpaceForce for awhile but I forgot about it on my harddrive, haven't touched it in months which doesn't say much about it. It is the first game in a long time with actual cockpit models which is nice! It sways around with inertia as you fly in different directions.

This screenshot is really nice but the ship and station models are generally really boring and cheesy looking. The fighting effects and overall design doesn't even come close to what X3 looks like.

EVE Online - MMO
This is probably by the far the deepest space game. The graphics are good but the game itself isn't easy to learn. It's basically a life.
