Sony - with a straight face

I wonder what the new Sony button in the middle of the controller does. I can guarantee it does something similar to the Dashboard button of the 360

Of course. They already stole and half-assed an idea from Nintendo, so they also had to steal one from Microsoft. :p

Honestly, someone needs to teach SCE (or maybe the industry in general) how to effing present a product. That continuous stream of long, awkward silences and pauses called a press conference was at best snore-worthy, in a wholly underwhelming way. It had the energy of a management team from a local McDonalds giving their employees a peptalk, and crawled at the pace of CSPAN. "And..now...hold on to your...horses...this will totally amaze....you" <insert long silent uneventful game sequence>.

And the controller "secret"...dear lord. I wouldn't have even expected Microsoft, the king copy-cat and cut-throat competitor, to be that shameless and underhanded. Then again, we still have yet to see what they're up to -- at this point I'm not putting anything past anyone.

We can only hope Nintendo and Microsoft have better conferences planned for Tuesday. I can only take so much boring. :p

I think the entire Sony presentation could have been cut down to about 1 hour. They definitely wasted too much time showing off irrelevant stuff (GT HD).

all the new gaming consoles have a good chance to wow people,
im just wondering, are the people who talk trash about a gaming console the same people who cant afford more than one console?,
i think the wii, ps3, and the x360 are all great machines, and will still go on strong, whats the point of choosing sides?.
all this innovative new (revamped) technology is great, doesnt matter how silly it sounds, because in the end, people are gunna buy what they want to buy, whether we like it or not, big F'n deal.

Agree 100%. I was watching the GT HD demo, got bored as the 2nd track was shown, got up to get myself a snack, came back and they were still on the 3rd track, and dead silence other than game sounds and most of the view was completely zoomed out showing the static textures of the Grand Canyon and almost nothing of the racing. I was stunned, really, I can't even imagine what the point of all that was.

Now I'm watching as they demo Genji 2. The Producer is demoing it, and it looks so "forced" as he stumbles through lines such as "...where, uh, where there, uh, there will be massive sea battle sequences that, uh, that will only be possible with the power of the Playstation 3...". But of course we don't see any, so it comes off as a totally canned marketing line, as if someone coached him to make sure he mentions it, but out of context it makes no sense and he clearly has a hard time delivering it.

I know a bad presentation doesn't make a bad console, but it sure does make it hard to inspire confidence when they seem to be looking for ways to "fill" their time on stage.

I must say the best part of the show was after the EA trailers. No one was clapping aside from the guy walking up on stage. I LOL'd :D

That and when the giant crab was off screen :p

it has the same thing as the wii controller built into it

No, it doesn't. It's not even close to the same. The technology sony is using in this controller has been used in PC controllers for years, the wii controller is completely different and significantly more advanced.

the guy that thought the rear view mirror with the psp was cool is so far off base. First of all, who even has a PSP stand to put their psp on next to their tv. Second of all, why not use all the "awesome" power of the ps3 and include proper mirrors in the main view. I mean really, no one is going to have a stand to prop the psp on, and having the psp sitting in your lap or next to you is going to cause you to crash every fricking time you look to see where someone is. I would rather the button to look behind to be quite honest.

another reason of many reasons why im buying a x360 :D

god almightly sony realy messed up big time with that controller. when will they ever ditch that controler design

You know...I (and I guess alot of you) was very dissapointed in the "new controller". Yes the boomerang controller prototype sucked....and sucked mightily so. But, instead of digging deep and coming up with a fresh innovative design they panicked. They panicked and went back with what they considered was tried and true and safe....the old PSone/PS2 design.
Gawd! How can you have confidence in a company when they obviously were panicking? I don't care what you say....updated with a few features here and there its still the old controller. Then they are going to say to people like me "omg u can't be satisfied first you say you hate the boomerang now u say you hate the old one". When a company starts talking like that its time to start worrying.

Truly we are seeing the effects of them over extending themselves with the PS3 development. I can see they have no real games ready. Costs overruns are eating them alive (between $500.00 - $600.00 for the unit?). And a last minute reverse back to the old controller with a couple pathetic updated features.
Wanna bet that killzone 2 trailer last year was entirely pre-rendered?
Gawd, I really still want to hold out hope for this console. :(

i think sony has the most comfortable controller, why change the design?, big deal if it looks the same, im not gunna cry over it.

You mean the most uncomfortable controller, right? Please tell me thats what you mean... Or, are your hands the size of a chipmunk's?

I have relatively big hands and out of the three systems, I would say the 360 controller is the best, followed by the Gamecube, and then the PS2. However, I don't really find any of them to be uncomfortable.

The Gamecube's controller is the most uncomfortable.

And there's no game that currently exists for consoles that can't be played on a controller like the PlayStation DualShock. That controller design has worked, and worked damn well, for the past decade. What would be the point in changing it?

i have f'n huge hands, the xbox controller would have been nice, except the area near the bottom of my thumbs always got really sore, and it actually hurt for days.
or do you have the hands of a yeti?

Indeed, a good showing from everyone imo. Great time to be a gamer :)

I don't see why this is a big deal. They are all money hungry giants anyways....

More direct to the topic....a titly feature or whatever the hell it is, is the most useless feature in a controller anyways...who the hell wants to wave their arms around the room to fly a freakin plane.....

As long as I get a good gaming experiences its all good=)

I'm just unhappy they got rid of the vibration function in the controller. I love the vibration function. Can't live without it anymore.

As a wavebird owner I can tell you this. You will get used to it. After a few years you go back to a vibrating controller and it really throws you off :p

also with the PS3 if you dont get the 600 buck one
you dont get Wi-Fi SD/CF/memorystick reader and HDMI out
the last part of that that makes Blu-ray useless

I couldn't help but laugh at them when I saw it go down. And then the price.

Everyone else can think whatever they like, but to me Sony is looking to be the laughing stock of E3.
News Flash: New technology is expensive!

I think we all know who the laughing stock really is.

you are very right "cyks"

im not laughing, should i be? or care?, i have a job, all i have to do is save a little extra.
im no fan boi, so any console will do.

why does everyone think Wii has the first motion sensor controller. Microsoft did the sidewinder back in the late 90s. If anything They should feel ripped off by Nintendo and Sony

another thing. I have a 360 and i think the hd dvd add on will be sweet and probably around $150. So that would bring my total cost up to $550 for the premium and HD DVD. Why bitch about ps3 for being $600 with a bigger hard drive than the xbox, HDMI, SD and CF and did i mention HDMI again which microsoft doesnt plan on releasing a HDMI cable for 360. So i think if you puyt the two systems side by side, PS3 might have an upper hand in the accesories it comes with. So stop hating sony and everyone should be happy the competition is tight because we the gamers are the ones that benefit from it. Technology goes up in cost with inflation and new inventions... so give the companies a break.

i dont think everybody thinks that,
nintendo's wii is new and advanced motion sensor technology (for home users), its not comparable to the other motion sensor controllers.
but this is supposed to be a thread about sony, so i'll stop it here.

and thats fine. Nintendo was thinking outside the box. Sony is using a motion sensor more similar to something like the sidewinder which isn't a copy of the Wii controller. But either way neither of the two above developed the motion sensor controller first

I don't care who is ripping who off, as long as in the end there is a very compelling reason to own all three consoles. I do have to say that I would rather fly the aircraft old fashioned though, that looked like a pretty sloppy to control the game.

Learning to play with the Wii controller is going to be like the first time I ever played on the PC using a keyboard and mouse. I can't wait to have another "first" in gaming moments!

very true, this concept has been around for the longest time, many have tried and failed to make it work for the public, the wii just might make it stick.

i had one of these bad boys http://www.vrealities.com/P5.html

i returned it a day after.

i completely agree with your post. i just wish there was a way to have everyone stop starting threads like this.
neither company was innovative in the concept, get over it.

finally someone figured it out, I love when people talk about "a bluray player for $499" shows how much they know

http://www.joystickreview.com/microsoft/sidewinderfreestylepro.asp

but I thought this was an amazing article from the "impressions of the sony press conference at E3'06 by the IGN Playstation Team"

Jeff Haynes, IGN PlayStation Team

The second issue that I have is that Sony doesn't seem to have learned from Microsoft's mistakes. Didn't we go through this crap before with the "retard pack" from the 360? No HDMI port, no card slots, no WiFi? At least the 360 could be upgraded whenever you wanted by paying for an additional hard drive if you couldn't afford the Premium edition. This isn't even that -- the damn system just doesn't have these features included. So much for cheap gaming, people -- get ready to sell a kidney for PS4 or XBox 720, whenever the hell those systems roll out in the future. What's more, I don't particularly care that it's relatively cheap if I'm getting a Blu-Ray player. Sorry, but I, and a large number of writers or consumers are still poor last time I checked, and I don't know if I'm going to throw down a small down payment on anything that isn't related to a car, a house or eliminating my debt. One of these systems, an extra controller, a couple of games and the inevitable other add ons we haven't been told about (but will probably roll out around TGS) will run close to a grand. That isn't early adopter angst, that's straight out lunacy.

That actually leads me to my third and final issue, which is that the amount of innovation seemed to be lacking this time around. The new PS3 controller is exactly the same as the old dual shock, except it borrows the "XBox convention" of a control button to sync up your controller in the center of the unit. The controller can be tilted and moved like the Wii-mote control. Why, in the name of all that is unholy, is Sony literally trying to meld the PS3 into the same thing as their competition? I'm sorry, but we all joked about how you're going to look Wii-tarded continually moving and shifting your way around your living room trying to fly; I'd rather use the thumb sticks on the damn controller. (Anyone notice that they didn't use the controller to "drive" via an imaginary steering wheel if it can detect six-axis motion?) I'd also rather have the rumble feature in the controller over this BS any day.

Craig Harris, IGN DS & GBA
The controller reveal was an attempt to be a big Eff You to Nintendo and its Wii controller, but they failed to show its "tilt" significance in any cool way. What they showed was exactly what I did on the PC with my Microsoft controller five years ago.
