Sony Viao XP install problem

Ok I'm stuck here so lets see if some fresh eyes can help me out. Got a Sony Viao PCG-7A2L from someone and I'm trying to install windows XP pro SP3 off a VLK disk. setup runs fine until i get to installing devices and it gets to about 50% through it and all of a sudden the computer reboots and starts that part over again and it just loops over and over. I thought maybe it was a hard drive issue so I threw in another hard drive which i know is good and same problem. Anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? its appears to be a device problem since it does this reboot on the installing devices part, but thought maybe someone here may have seen a similar problem before I start pulling out parts from the lappy.
 
now after a million reboots this time it got all the way to enter the cd key and then it rebooted.

Does it ask you to enter the key before or after installing devices? It's been so long since I've done an XP install from scratch. If it's before, could be a sign of processor overheating, or maybe a dying power supply.

only reboots through the windows, if i go into bios or memtest or whatever it runs no problems never reboots, as soon as i hit windows setup it dies and cd key is after device install it asks for name then cd key and reboots half way through typing it in.

memtest86 found 0 errors
dont have any spare dvd drive and this thing doesnt boot from USB so i cant even ghost it off a 16gb flash

Arguably, Windows would put more stress on more hardware than BIOS or memtest would. Can you boot a live-CD and see if you still get a reboot. Would narrow it down to a Windows configuration problem.
 
guess i will try the ultimate boot cd tomorrow. Midnight before hit the sack before I sleep through work LOL.
 
just ran a ubuntu live cd and it reboots on the live cd too
 
Did you run Memtest on each stick of RAM separately?

Also remove the battery and leave it just plugged into the outlet for now. And if it doesn't void the warranty doing so, remove the wifi card just to see if that's the issue.
 
only has 1 stick of ram, I need to crack it open i guess to see if maybe a fan is dead and its overheating. wifi us built in so i need to see if its a clip in one like the hp and dells, but when it happens whether its turned on or off by the switch.
