So..this Sony 32" LCD is advertised as 720p.. and as with most 720p TV's, they'll also display 1080i signals.

I've had 2-3 LCD's in the last couple year's that would do this.. 2 of them were connected to my PS3 and Xbox360.. 1 Panasonic Viera 26", and 1 Westinghouse 32".. both ONLY displayed 720p/1080i in the Ps3 display settings.

Over the last few years, the only options I could see available on my PS3's display were 480p, 720p and 1080i..

I got this new Sony Bravia KDL-32L4000 and lo-and-behold, 1080p is available under the PS3's display properties.. So I select it and it shows 1080p in the Sony display settings.

I run some games and wtf..1080p! I got a TV advertised as 720p and it's displaying 1080p!

Is this common? lol..

I can see a diff when it's set to 1080p..it's more fluid and the FPS look smoother..

Sorry to say it, but it's probably the placebo effect.

It's simply downscaling the 1080p signal to 720p.

well, when I set the 720p or 1080i in the Ps3 display settings, it displays it in the Sony OSD as such.. when I select 1080p, it's displaying 1080p on the Sony OSD..

When I hooked up the 2 previous LCD's to my PC and selected a resolution of 1920x1080i (30hz), I noticed the flickering..alot of it.. the same flickering you see when a CRT is set to 60hz..

When I set this Sony to the same resolution on my PC, I get no flickering, i get a clean picture such as a regular LCD monitor, just without the crispness..

Why would they program 1080p into the firmware to display on the OSD if it didn't display that? Why can I select 1080p with THIS LCD, but couldn't with my 2 previous?

I guess there's no real way to determine if it's accepting a 1080p signal.. =/

The other odd thing is that the 1080P only displays on the Sony OSD when it's running a 1080p app.. such as the XMB, LifeWithPlaystation, etc.. If I run a game that's only 720p, the OSD shows as 720p..

That's to be expected - when putting a 1080p source in it's displaying 1080p, when putting a 720p source in it's displaying 720p.

Makes no difference, the TV is simply scaling to the native resolution.

It's just telling you what the source is, it's downscaling a 1080p signal.

My 40" 720p Bravia does that. It accepts 1080p but will downscale it to 1080i. If you hit the display info button while playing, it should say 1080i or 720p.

Just enjoy the good looks and don't worry about all that. What matters is what looks good to you.

When I hit the display button,. it's showing "16:9 1080p HD"

If I tell the Ps3 to display in 1080i, it shows "16:9 1080i HD" and the same with 720p.

I'm just curious to know if I have a 1080p TV when it's advertised at 720p.. Why code 1080p into the firmware?

Why display the "source" signal if that's not what's technically being displayed.. I've never heard of a TV doing that.. I've got 2 friends with Ps3's that are hooked up to a 72" DLP, and a 61" DLP.. both show 1080i on the OSD yet those 2 TV's, for a fact, upscale 1080i to 1080p just wont accept a 1080p signal.

Why allow me to choose 1080P under the PS3 display properties on THIS tv when my 2 previous LCD's, it was grayed out.

=/

Because the scaler in this TV accepts 1080p, just because it can display a 1080p signal does not mean it has 1080 pixel resolution. It's not that hard to grasp.
