Sony boosting output of PlayStation 5 to meet surge in demand

-- Sony Corp. is roughly doubling its PlayStation 5 production to 10 million units this year as it sees the prolonged effects of the Covid-19 pandemic boosting demand for gaming, according to people familiar with its plans.

The electronics giant has informed assembly partners and suppliers it’s radically increasing orders for its next-generation console, though logistics may yet pose a challenge to delivering all those machines on time for the holiday shopping season, the people said, asking to remain anonymous. Sony had previously aimed to produce 5 million to 6 million PS5 units by the end of March 2021,

A Sony spokesman declined to comment.Japanese business daily Nikkei earlier reported Sony’s planned production boost of the game machine, which is scheduled to release this fall.

Concerns about a second wave of coronavirus infections may keep more people at home for longer, as governments around the world closely monitor efforts to reopen their economies. Sony’s revised expectation is that this ongoing situation will stir additional demand for the PlayStation 5 console, whose official debut captivated the gaming community.

Even with a boost to manufacturing, Sony may still be unable to put enough units on store shelves in the coming year-end holiday season due to shipping constraints, the people said. A large proportion of Sony’s consoles are made in China and sent out via sea around the world. It takes months for shipments to travel from China to the U.S. and Europe via ocean lines, and Nintendo Co. earlier this year had trouble refilling stock of its popular Switch console for this reason.

Sony had previously advised suppliers that it would require 10 million units of the DualSense controller for the new PlayStation machine by March next year. Production of the new controller is also being increased to match the console’s new output plan.

Sony began PS5 mass production in June and, under the latest plan, expects to assemble 5 million units by the end of September and another 5 million between October and December. A large portion of the latter tranche would turn into stock for 2021 due to the logistical delay. Sony could try to use air cargo for faster delivery, as it did in 2013 around the launch of the PlayStation 4, though airlines are running vastly reduced schedules due to Covid-19 and Sony’s ability to reserve flights would be limited.

Hope I'll be able to snag one soon after launch.

Interested to see how long MS and Sony play chicken with the console prices though. Would be funny if they waited until launch day to announce pricing, lol.

Most launch day sales are through preordering, so unless they're not doing preorders this time around it would be impossible to hold back pricing for that long. You would think that before increasing production to meet paper demand they would at least have some solid preorder numbers to work with, first. But what do I know.

if there's another lockdown in the Fall/Winter then it's smart to have more PS5's available but if retail stores like Best Buy are shut down again along with delayed delivery through Amazon etc it's going to hurt sales

They'll just have to step up their shipping game, which most stores offer. But yes I assume a lot of people will want to get it in person for whatever reason. I think whatever sales are lost from those people will be made up by people who normally couldn't get one because they ran out of stock.

Wake me when they announce a good launch title. Or when we get a new God of War game.

Best Buy hasn’t had PlayStation 4 Pro in stock since early April. I’m sure Sony would like to make up for that sales slump before the end of the year.

I don't think best buy ever shut down, at least in NY as they are deemed essential in that they supply stuff for people to work from home. They've had curbside pickup since the beginning.

Wake me up when they actually announce the price of the console. People are ready to buy a machine that they don't know what it'll cost?

Sure, why not? People here are already committed to buying the 3080 Ti at $1200+, so a console that should be around $500 seems pretty reasonable in comparison.

Or this is just a marketing thing, same as the "shortage" to try and entice more preorders.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Start a rumor of parts shortages then start another that they are doubling manufacturing capacity?

Both consoles are going to sell every one they can make for the first few months regardless of anything. There is no reason to play stupid tricks like that, except well you know...

Curbside pickup. Not that anyone will buy these things since $70 games and all ;)

I'll be happy if I can finally play Horizon Zero Dawn at something more than 30FPS. It was so distracting, I quit playing it.

Unfortunately, just about every other division of Sony loses money, so it's kind of a wash.

Exactly. There is no way I'm spending more than $1000 on a video card period. If a console can give me a playable enough experience along with backward compatibility, I'll bite. Honestly, as much as I like the PS as I've had every generation to date, I like the Xbox model where you buy once and have games on both PC and Xbox.

Glad I don't have that issue.. I have no probs going from 120Hz with VRR on my PC to 30 FPS on my PS4. If the frame pacing wasn't usually perfectly locked to 30 though, then I would have an issue with it, but fortunately it is and I'm good with that at least since it's consistent.

Keep in mind, gaming is only 25% of that.
