I've been wanting to do some kind of wireless intercom for my house for awhile, but haven't been able to find anything. I've recently discovered Sonos (and wireless audio in general, not intercom!) and it's the kind of thing I've really been wanting to do. Put speakers in all of my bedrooms and at least one major room where everyone hangs out. The problem is price (WHOA) and I don't know yet all limitations and quirks. My goals/caveats/abilities/musings are:
*To provide an audio source (not just music if possible) to each room to wake the kids with music, send voice messages via MP3 if necessary, maybe let them listen to an audio book as they go to sleep, etc.
*I'd rather go quantity than quality. Buying so many Sonos units would put me in the poor house. Bulk discount anyone?
Anyway it doesn't have to be amazing quality sound though the one in the main room would be a nicer one.
*Simplicity is good which is why Sonos seems nice. I can do a server if I need to, I have android/windows tablets and WP7 smartphones in the house. I can build a device if pointed in the right direction, but it has to save money and remain simple.
*I have ethernet jacks in every room so it doesn't have to be wireless. Ideally I could just have all speakers terminate back to my 24 port gigabit switch connected to my router.
*I like that the squeezebox has a clock and an alarm I believe, so it can perform other actions.
*Most of the time it'd be streaming locally stored music or Zune pass if possible. I'm open to Pandora or Spotify but I'd prefer to not subscribe to anymore music services unless it's the clincher.
*What other products are out there that are comparable to Sonos or Squeezebox?
