Something is overheating......... help pls

Intel Core i7-920 DO with Corsair H50 Cooler
ASUS Rampage III Gene MicroATX
CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) DDR3 1600
Intel X25-M 80GB SSD
640GB WD Caviar Black 7.2k
EVGA GTX 460 768MB
OCZ ZS Series 550W 80PLUS Bronze
LG BD-ROM Burner
Silverstone TJ08B-E
Windows 7 Pro 64

I've been having some issues while gaming (Tera Online and Serious Sam 3). Maybe about 30 mins or so while gaming, sound starts to stutter/fps drops and keyboard and mouse input starts to get laggy/delayed. Then if I keep playing, it would BSOD. Also, I would minimize the game and check the temps, everything looks ok. But, when I run a HDTune test on both my drives, my read speeds drop to around 30MB/s......and thats on my SSD. When I do a cold boot, it goes back to 200MB/s..... I dont have the dump from the BSOD because I did a clean install of windows hoping it would help with the troubleshooting process. Heres what I did so far:

1) Did a pass of memtest. No Errors

2) Ran prime95 for an hour. No crashes or symptoms

3) Ran Linx and Furmark together for over an hour. No crashes or symptoms.
Temps running step 3 according to CPUID.
CPU: 72c (Highest on the 4 cores)
NB: 80c
SB: 72c
GPU: 75c
Ambient Temps: Hawaii with no AC =P

4) While gaming, I removed the side panel of the case and had a fan blowing straight into it. After an hour, I wouldnt get any problems. So it seems like its a heating problem. But why doesnt step 3 reproduce the problems?

5) While gaming, I waited until the sound started stuttering/fps drop. Then I would turn the fan on, and the problem goes away.

6) reformatted with fresh install of windows....... didnt help


There is no overclocking. Default settings on mobo. HT is turned on. Also, I downgraded from a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 to this micro board and I did not have any problems with the same hardware.

Anything else I could test to pin point the temp problem? Or is it something else?

IIRC, that mobo did have cooling issues. Mainly related to the chipset. Stick a fan over it and you ahould be ok. As for why step 3 didn't reproduce the error, probably because Furmark doesn't show performance but rather stress testing. So stuttering/FPS wouldn't be apparent.

ok thanks! ill try that. yeah, i was reading about heating problems, but temps didnt look out of the norm.... and also for step 3, i ran HDTune at the end of the stress test and the "Read" speeds didnt drop like it would when gaming.

can anyone recommend a fan for this chipset? Never bought one for a chipset so i dont know which are good.....

Ah yes, I had that motherboard for about a year with 2 580gtx's, she needed some decent cooling. I had issues with it in a micro ATX case and just the 2x 120mm fans it had. Once I went to the HAF 912 with it, it was perfect. It just needs some good air flow, and it's rock solid.

well i got the fan that "Melon" recommended (the only problem with that fan is that its not as firm as it should be). i have the fan right on the chipset and had zero problems since.
