Someone killed SETI

Yeah it says that in the article... but killing it off sounded better

lol, yeah, I know what you mean.
My friend told me that earlier today so that's why I knew.

I wish they would really....there are no aliens. If there were, we'd all be dead by now. :p

Amen preach it brother!

I was hoping the whole project would die off so we could recruit them all for the [H]orde.

Fold on people! For tuxedoedShrimp

So they are BOINCing aliens? <--little toilet humor there :D

That's not toilet humor unless you are in the toilet when BOINCing. :p

I would like to see something with the power that SETI has to come over to folding.Maybe even direct a few of them to UD also. I'm just wondering if there will be some that come over. I don't know anything about the BOINC client but I wouldn't be surprised if some of them don't like it and end up looking for something else. If this sounds stupid, it's because I haven't looked at SETI in years.

ever think of the idea that we're not worth their time? or that the universe is a REALLY big damn place?

we ain't alone jethro I just got probed last weekend!

The fact that you got probed last weekend, does not prove that there are aliens.

Misdirected post, sorry...

Off topic a bit, but I think that while there could be aliens out there, that things more resemble what a particular sci-fi writer puts in his books (Jack McDevitt). Societies evolve, achieve spaceflight (or die off beforehand), spread out a bit in the local space, and then something happens to them such that they die off or revert to primativism. So in his books, you find many extinct civilizations, a few primative ones, and remnants of active ones, but none active nearby.

In which case, they may not have stumbled across us yet, or have and are avoiding us. :) Being barbarians and all. (in their view).

Or an alternative might be like Ian Douglas does in his "Heritage Trilogy", wherein there are these robotic ships that go around, stamping out any civilizations they discover. Only civilizations that "stay quiet" get to live very long.

I think that any aliens in local space could have detected us by now, as we've been putting out radio waves for over 100 years now.

Or we could be living amongst you now....

I still think SETI is a good thing.

I beleive there probably are aliens of some sort out there, but using a computers cycles to listen to them is kinda silly, and very subjective to begin with. All mine fold to help produce something that will actually help humanity.

I used to fold for seti, but switch over to folding for humans. It's a waste of computer resources to search for something that might never be found, but a cure for cancer might be found faster with many computers folding. Just my .02 cents.

I'm leaning that way as well. For over nine years worth of CPU time, I've run SETI. The one thing that has always bothered me about any kind of folding@home is that effectively we are doing the work for the drug companies.

It is such a good thing to find cures for these diseases. My mom had cancer several times and luckily is still in remission since her last treatment, and to this day I have folding@home on her PC. However, I can't help but think that someday we will have a major breakthrough that drug companies/insurance companies will then capitalize on, and screw us over in the end (when we have to pay them for it). That's the ONLY thing that bothers me. Otherwise it's a very noble cause!!

I worked on the F-117A at Groom Lake and Tonopah Test Range for 2 yrs in the early 90's, and I can definately say that there are.......[This post has been edited for national security reasons by the Office of Special Investigations]

Here's my own .02.

Figure it this way. Even if, say, some aliens are chilling on a world just 100ly away. I'd say its possible, maybe even likely, right? Thousands of stars within that range. But at 100ly, it'd be at least 220 years or so (think we'd understand what they said right away? Nah, try AlienSpeak@Home) before we'd get a message back.

Better, I think, to say that some exist out there, probably even millions that control whole galaxies, or even groups of millions of galaxies under their reign, and that we'll one day declare war on each and every one of them.. and go back to folding for things more relavent in the short run, like cancer (even Einstein@Home is more relevant) since we know what the long run is ;)

From that point of view, S@H is just a curiosity to see if we can pick up something sooner, something interesting. (Result of 10 years of work from AS@H: a 5 minute video of alien pr0n)

Hmm, I talked to this WW2 & Korea vet some over the past 5 years, and he swears upon all thats holy he was manning an anti-air turret on some beach in Korea when a couple UFO's showed up and flew over head for a while. He tells it to anybody he knows, he swears by it. He claimed they went faster then any of the turrets could track, and their turning radius was effectively zero..

Truth, or warped memory from a guy who a few months after that got blown clear out of a tank.. hmm, I vote for bored alien children that played with toy army ants until their daddies spanked them and told them not to play with their food

I'd like to see the raw math for all DC projects.

Like to know how the Seti info is screened.

Well this is why I came over. Seti had started to give real old work units and I figured I would switch as I knew the end was near.

and this is the same reason why we humans have completely eradicated cockroaches from our planet?
