I helped my boss build a computer for his mother, and when it came time to install Windows 7, we could not get it to allow us to install onto the SSD. It would tell us "No drives found." And the list of drives would be blank.

The most puzzling thing is I formatted the drive on another machine, just to test. After this windows would show the drive as part of the 'find drivers' list of devices.

Anyway, long story short, I had to update the firmware on the SSD. It was a Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB. Using the Sandisk SSD Toolbox, I created a bootable usb stick, which updated the firmware, and windows was then able to see the drive without issue.

No need to mess with AHCI, no need to mess with formatting the disk... There's a lot of bad info out there. But if this happens to you, try updating the firmware on your storage device.
