hi guys,I have bought a new pc,I knew the cpu isnt overclockable,so i decided to buy an not-overclockable mobo too.
core i3 2120 3.3ghz
P8h61m-lx
8GB ddr3
GTX 480
1000w psu(future proof)

So far all games are running amazingly smooth at max settings.I can overclock the video card but most games i play are cpu bound.I am very power hungry tho :p So my question is,is it possible to overclock my cpu with some software tool, like cpufsb,or clockgen.I read in a lot of posts "how to overclock ur laptop" cuz laptops usually are locked to stock too.I am a bit afraid to experiment,I have been overclocking a lot my old pc,but it was amd and its complete different thing. Also is there any chance i would damage my pc if i try one of these software tools?or I could just test all of em ^^

Neither the CPU nor that motherboard are overclockable. Even if you could, you would only be able to adjust the BCLK of the i3 only a few mhz no matter what motherboard you use, and it wouldn't be anything useful.

If you want to overclock, get an i5 2500K and any motherboard that has a p67 or z68 chipset.

thx for fast replies, pls dont state obvious things..even 5mhz on blck would be useful i think...thats 5% peformance that comes as a gift..why not get it.I dont have any options in my bios(latest version) has anyone tried software overclocking with this cpu/chipset?

You're not going to be able to with an H61 no matter what CPU is in there, let alone an i3.

How about you start saving your money for an i5-3570K and a Z77 board?

For a dual core the i3 lineup is pretty beefy when it comes to gaming

Point is, still not going to work. The bios is locked down, and software cannot access and change those settings.

what about some laptops that ppl overclock, most are lockdown and they overclock them with software..

Those laptops have turbo boost features, so the multiplier isn't really "locked." That software "locks" in the multiplier at the higher one.

i still game on my i3-2100 with an ASRock H61 board, Recently upgraded my vid card from a 5750 to a 6850. Best upgrade i ever did. I plan on gettin the IVB 3570K to run on my current board, if not ill just roll with a 2400. The quad cores would help for multi tasking but other then that, I never hit more then 80% CPU usage other then in BF3. Very happy with my budget build and the i3 is still always underestimated IMO.

mazdaboi, that 80% cpu usage is because games are not optimised for HT,80% actually means that its 100% using 2 cores

...I think a discussion of a game being CPU limited is highly dependent on what game and settings its played at. In any case, for most common day games the sb i3 is not a major bottleneck.

it wouldnt harm if I try clockgen or cpufsb ,right ?;p

The problem here is that the i3 does not have TurboBoost at all. And with that particular i3, there is virtually zero performance benefit over stock if the BCLK is raised to its maximum stable setting.
